There's clearly no point in just defending against Ashwin because he's bowling so well, you just know it's only going to work in his favour.

But there's a balance between how Root and Bairstow are playing him, to the recklessness of Ben Duckett. And right on cue, Bairstow cuts him for four more.

He may well be smashing him out of the attack altogether at this rate.

Joe Root tucks Jadeja off his hips for a nicely-timed four as he moves to 22 from 25 balls.

Can the Yorkshire duo dig England out of a hole here?

Jonny Bairstow is looking to be ultra aggressive to Ravichandran Ashwin based on those two sixes. How long can it last, though? Every time Ashwin tosses it up he'll try hit it for six. It'll be entertaining while it lasts.

Well, let's look at the positives.

England's deficit is now less than 200.

Jonny Bairstow has 25 from 18 balls.

    Here's Jonny!

He smashes Ashwin for back-to-back sixes over mid-wicket!

  8. Eng 56-3published at 13 overs

That is true, but let's cut them a bit of slack.

Ashwin has played 100 Tests. This is Hartley and Bashir's first ever Test tour.

The difference between Ashwin here and the England spinners is variation. Variation of bounce and significant variation of turn causing uncertainty in the batsmen, resulting in wickets falling to both attacking and defensive shots. This is a master at work, and the Indian top order would be equally at sea against it as our lads.

Just shows how brutal a long Test tour of India can be.

Ollie Pope started it with 196, and it was being called the greatest innings by an overseas batter in India.

He ends it with question marks over his place.

Not scapegoating or anything but Ollie Pope has got to go... every time he comes out he's a wicket waiting to be taken, albeit England have already lost but Pope is not someone you want coming in at no 3. Need some changes.

    Nice.

Jasprit Bumrah makes a rare mistake and gifts Bairstow a half-volley on his pads to clip away for four.

Be interesting to see how Stokes and McCullum try to spin this one. The last tour to India was 3-1, this will be 4-1. Tell me how that’s progress?

Now would be a great time for an Angry Jonny Bairstow century, as Joe Root ends the over with a picture-perfect cover drive for four.

    Pope c Jaiswal b Ashwin 19 (Eng 36-3)

It's unravelling. Ashwin has his third.

Every ball looking like taking a wicket, and it seems to have got in Pope's head. He's wary of the turn so premeditates a sweep but it bounces more than expected, taking a top edge and Yashasvi Jaiswal runs from square leg to take the catch.

A messy end to Pope's series that started so wonderfully.

I had just seen off a stiff coffee hoping to settle into another enjoyable innings from Crawley. Ashwin looking dangerous every ball. Questioning whether to hit the hay before the caffeine hits…

Just a single from Jasprit Bumrah's latest.

He and Ashwin are forming a formidable partnership at the moment.

    That'll do.

Joe Root reverse sweeps Ashwin for four, before a beauty beats batter, stumps and keeper to run away for byes.

We know England are probably not going to win from here. It's almost impossible.

But those paying fans who have made the journey to Dharamsala deserve to see them at least put up a fight.
