    With Yuki Tsunoda you feel like you would want to give him a couple of runs at this should he need it, he's not been comfortable and so it feels like a high-risk strategy.

    P5 turns to P6 for Isack Hadjar as Pierre Gasly puts his Alpine above the Racing Bulls. This is turning out to be a great Q1 for the French team, as Jack Doohan goes fourth-fastest.

    The lap for Ollie Bearman wasn't the cleanest. leaving the Haas driver in 13th place. He'll be looking over his shoulder now.

    Meanwhile, fellow rookie Isack Hadjar has gone up to P5.

    Oliver Bearman is the man on the right side of the drop zone - just. The British teenager is sitting in 15th place and is winding up a latest lap in the hopes of making it through to Q2 in Sakhir.

    Max Verstappen aborted his lap when he went into Turn 14. It was the left front tyre he locked, which is the outside tyre just at the point where he would be able to turn in, that's unusual.

    It's usually the unloaded tyre that locks up if anything and it seems that was the loaded tyre.

    Those deleted lap times have placed Max Verstappen and Yuki Tsunoda down in the elimination zone with five minutes to go. The Red Bull garages are starting to sweat slightly...

    The other papaya car is on the prowl. Lando Norris crosses the line with a 1:31.107 to beat his McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri's marker. The gap between the pair is 0.285 seconds.

    Australian Jack Doohan goes quickest in the Alpine with a 1:31.919 on the his soft run. That turns to P2 as Charles leclerc jumps to the top with a time 0.062 seconds quicker. His Ferrari team-mate Lewis Hamilton has dropped to fourth because here comes Oscar Piastri - and instantly he goes quickest of the lot.

    Max Verstappen is purple in the first sector and is on his way to a decent lap time on his first flying attempt. As he nears the end of the lap, the Dutchman runs wide and aborts his effort. He's on the radio to say he thinks there is a problem with the car.

    Lap time deleted for Verstappen, also a cross off for his new team-mate Yuki Tsunoda.

    George Russell has been able to get the best out of that Mercedes so far, pushing the car to the absolute limit and extracting everything that seems available. That is exactly what you want from a driver.

    The trio of Fernando Alonso, Lance Stroll and Nico Hulkenberg are still the only cars to take to the circuit in this Q1 session. Alonso puts down the first marker with a 1:32.362 on the softs, with Hulkenberg's Sauber 0.448 seconds behind.

    Stroll, unfortunately, has had his lap time deleted.

    McLaren do have a pretty considerable advantage, I think that's a fair way to describe it.

    What we don't know is which way between those two drivers it's going to go, there could still be a challenge from outside.
