McLaren’s Lando Norris headed Red Bull’s Max Verstappen in a first practice session at the Dutch Grand Prix that started in wet and wild conditions and ended under blue skies.

A blustery wind, gusting at up to more than 70km/h, continued throughout the session but the track, wet at the start, was dry by the end of the hour.

Norris was 0.201 seconds faster than Verstappen, with Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton third fastest, 0.684secs off the pace, his fastest lap time affected by traffic.

Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz, on medium-compound tyres rather than the soft used by those ahead of him, was fourth.

Mercedes’ George Russell was fifth, from Williams’ Alex Albon and McLaren’s Oscar Piastri.

A decent little flurry of times at the end of a windy session.

Max Verstappen had just gone quickest in the final sector to go top in the dying moments, but Lando Norris has just snuck through to claim the fastest marker once again. Phew.

Norris is fastest with a 1:12.322 and Red Bull's Verstappen is second with a time two-tenths off the pace of the McLaren.

    McLaren-Mercedes-McLaren-Mercedes.

Lando Norris leads the field but George Russell is able to extract a pinch more pace out of his Mercedes-soft-tyre combo. The McLaren is still over three-tenths quicker than the Silver Arrow, though.

Pierre Gasly and Max Verstappen are in each other's way as the pair start their next flying attempt. No hard done - this time.

Meanwhile, it's Mercedes. versus McLaren with less than three minutes to go. Lando Norris is back to being the fastest man at Zandvoort, but is now followed by seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton. The gap between the Brits is 0.399 seconds.

The red soft tyre is the choice for the majority of the field now, only the two Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz have opted for the medium compound.

With the circuit offering more dry lines with every lap, Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris are the two cars to beat.

    But...

... not for long, as George Russell drops us into the 1:13s on his lates run, 0.527 seconds quicker than Australian Piastri.

Take two on the slicks for George Russell and this time he's able to find more pace on the drying track. The Mercedes man shoots to the top of the board with a 1:15.900, with Lando Norris' team-mate Oscar Piastri now second.

Lando Norris is purple in sectors one and two and the Briton is being very careful in the final part of the lap to find the dry line on those soft tyres. He crosses the line and stays top of the timesheets with a 1:17.367. George Russell's new marker is 0.518 seconds slower than Norris' on the same compound.

  15. Which drivers are still looking for a 2025 seat?published at 12:14 British Summer Time 23 August

Of the five drivers who are out of contract at the end of 2024, Kevin Magnussen and Williams' Logan Sargeant look certain to be making an permanent exit from the grid, so that leaves Valtteri Bottas, Zhou Guanyu and Daniel Ricciardo left to fight it out.

Sauber's Zhou said yesterday he has chatted to Mattia Binotto, who has replaced Andreas Seidl as head of Audi's Formula 1 project for 2026, about his prospects beyond this season.

"We've spoken about it, of course we have spoken about [a 2025 seat]," said the Chinese driver.

"Of course, that's one of the topics going forward in the next few weeks to see where I belong for next season and onwards."

Will Ricciardo hang on to his seat at RB? Or will another rookie, New Zealander Liam Lawson, be added to next year's driver line-up?

Lando Norris said yesterday he hadn't been performing at the level of a world champion in the first half of the season, so what can the McLaren driver do in the final 10 race of the 2024 campaign?

Well, right now, he can bump George Russell down the order on the timesheets.

Norris goes 0.052 seconds faster that the Mercedes driver to sit top with a 1:20.392 on the green inters.

The green intermediates are starting to appear now with the conditions on track drying slightly.

Max Verstappen, winner of the past three Dutch Grands Prix, put his Red Bull to the top of the timesheets with a 1:21.300, but George Russell has just beaten that marker by 0.856 seconds in the Mercedes.

  18. Postpublished at 12:03 British Summer Time 23 August

The crowd are cheering, even though the yellow flag is out, as Max Verstappen does a full spin to get himself out of a pickle following a twitch in the Red Bull. The Dutchman is on the intermediates and just clips the kerb on his first flying lap.

Weather alert! Rain is two minutes away but Max Verstappen is heading out on the green intermediates.

  20. What seats are left for 2025?published at 11:54 British Summer Time 23 August

In the drivers' press conferences before the summer break, we heard Carlos Sainz being described as the 'cork in the bottle' when it came to finalising the grid for next season.

Now that the Spaniard has committed his future to Williams, and Jack Doohan has made the step up at Alpine, what's left on the table for those still looking to secure a 2025 seat?

Unless Mercedes pull off a major shock, then that spot seems to be heading 17-year-old Formula 2 driver Kimi Antonelli's way (or Kimi Raikkonen's, as George Russell joked yesterday), so it's slim pickings.

    Mercedes

    George Russell and seat available.

    RB

    Yuki Tsunoda and seat available.
