The windscreen wipers are on on the support cars, could this play into the hands of the escapees? The damp roads will make an already-nervous peloton even more jittery as they head to the finish.

15km to go and the leaders are 70 seconds clear.

"They are riding extremely hard. The peloton is a long line now. They are licking on now but Barta and Bideau are still riding hard on the front. They can't keep anything back now."

There's a spot of rain in the air and the road is a little damp in east London, although it's still dry at the finish line. The peloton has upped the pace and is moving along at 47km/h. Trouble is, so are Barta and Bideau. The lead is coming down slowly.

There are lots of volunteers in the middle of the road waving yellow flags to warn the peloton of the dangers as the riders weave across the road, avoiding the street furniture..

Andy (not getting much done at work in) from Bradford on text: Is this sprint finish the same as the one for the tour of Britain in September?

Marco: Just starting raining again at Parliament Square. Gonna make the sprint interesting.

"The irony. A few riders pick up the blue cycle lane and the spectators are lined up in it. The riders had to stop and jump over back onto the road."

Barta and Bideau are being cheered on for every inch of the remainder of this race through London. They are heading out east towards City Airport. A few riders have gone down one of Mayor Boris's blue cycle lanes and have to hop back on to the black tarmac when their route disappears.

The leaders are 90 seconds clear with 20km remaining.

Here we go around the edge of the Olympic Park in Stratford - the scene of such sporting joy two short summers ago, although it feels like a lifetime now. The race is skirting the edge of the Park - the roof is off the Olympic Stadium, which is being renovated to become West Ham's football stadium.

Barta and Bideau are mouths agape, gulping in air. Can they stay clear? No chance. They lead by 1'53" with 25km remaining.

The Lotto-Belisol riders are on the front of the peloton and the hammer is down. They are riding for Andre Greipel remember.

"The crowds are fantastic. There is a collective groan as we see the reason for the crash earlier. David Lopez, the Team Sky rider, goes into one of the crowd trying to take a picture a few yards onto the road. Lopez got away with it but a few riders didn't."

There's no danger of London being outdone by little ol' Yorkshire. There are thousands upon thousands lining every inch of the route. A replay of the accident and it's a Team Sky rider who takes the spectator out. It looked like David Lopez - the spectator was standing out in the road and Lopez caught him a glancing blow.

"It seemed everyone further ahead was braking and it was the concertina effect for Andy Schleck. Being at the back of the peloton is generally the most dangerous place. What was Schlek doing? Perhaps smiling at someone taking a selfie and bang. He is on the ground."

There's been an accident and it looks like a spectator might have been clipped by a rider. Andy Schleck, the winner of the 2010 Tour de France is on the deck and he is getting back up slowly. I'm not sure exactly what happened there but if you are out on the roadside, keep well back!

The television pictures are showing us the sights of Londres - with the commentators waxing lyrical about Tower Bridge, the Shard and Gherkin - although I'm sure one just called the Gherkin the onion.

Back on the road, the leading two are now two minutes clear again. The peloton toying with them as we head to the top of the Victoria Underground line at Walthamstow. Just 32km rmaining
