This Chris Froome attack has put a dent in Adam Yates' chances of earning the yellow jersey. Yates was seven seconds ahead of Froome at the start of the day and the defending champion has a 17-second advantage over the Orica-BikeExchange rider.

    The Tour d'Angleterre continues!

  3. Froome 'taking a risk'published at 16:11 British Summer Time 9 July 2016

He is taking a bit of a risk. I wouldn't want to be the team directors watching this. They will be on the edge of their seats.

The speed they are going he won't gain that many seconds. I wonder how much it will take out of him. It's a big effort.

Team Sky's Chris Froome is tucked in and motoring at over 85km/h, sat on his crossbar as he pedals furiously. His lead is 10 seconds now.

Don't forget it's downhill all the way to the finish.

Incredible scenes. Chris Froome is on the attack on the descent. This is a descent which will suit him. It's more like time-trialling.

    15km to go

Team Sky's Sergio Henao has been a beast up this final climb of the day, but Chris Froome overtakes him and makes it to the top first. The defending champion is up and away down the hill and makes an attack on the descent!

He's about four or five seconds in front.

    16km to go

Tinkoff's Alberto Contador cannot live with this pace and slips off the back as we are one kilometre from the top of the Col de Peyresourde. Geraint Thomas is there too.

Now Movistar's Nairo Quintana mounts a burst up the hill. Chris Froome stays in touch. This is exhausting and that's only watching it!

Were you wondering where Chris Froome has been lurking? He's here now. Team Sky's defending champion slams down the hammer and we are off.

Team Sky's Geraint Thomas is open-mouthed as he gasps for air. They are really turning the screw. Merciless. Adam Yates is still hanging on.

The good news for Yates is that the stage finishes with a 17km descent.

Yellow jersey holder Greg van Avermaet is 15 minutes back. He'll be back in BMC team colours tomorrow.

Rafal Majka is getting burned by the peloton as they continue their ascent. So is Team Sky's Wout Poels, the riders are dropping off the back like flies but Adam Yates is still in the mix.

As it stands, the 23-year-old Brit looks like he will end up in yellow at the end of stage eight.

Four Team Sky riders head the pack with Chris Froome in pursuit. Movistar's Nairo Quintana is in touch.

It's all going well for Team Sky. They have managed to disintegrate this group and they still have strength in numbers.

    2. Chris Froome, 8 pts

    3. Rafal Majka, 6 pts

  16. Yates asks for energy boostpublished at 15:41 British Summer Time 9 July 2016

    Rob Hatch
BBC Radio 5 live sports extra commentator

Adam Yates has just radioed in and asked for some food and drink. Normally in the last 20kms you can't have anything but with the heat today I would hope the commissionaires won't be too strict.

  18. Kelderman feeling the heatpublished at 15:38 British Summer Time 9 July 2016

    Rob Hayles
Former GB cyclist on BBC 5 live sports extra

That crash for Wilco Kelderman looked like it came because of the heat, and the breaking which adds heat. The tyre just rolled off the wheel. It looks the heat has gone into the tyres, which is an issue for the mechanic.

The peloton piles down the other side and LottoNL-Jumbo's Wilco Kelderman takes a fall. It looked like his glued-on tyres gave way as he braked hard around a corner.
