Well, that's it from me today. I'll be back tomorrow from 12:00 BST as we start to get punchy and head into Massif Central.

I strongly suggest you read Geraint Thomas' stage preview and that you keep across the BBC 5 live twitter account for the BeSpoke podcast later today.

And Mark Cavendish will cling on to the green jersey, on a technicality.

Peter Sagan leads the sprinters, but he can't wear two jerseys at once (well, he could, but he'd be a bit warm) so he'll don the yellow and hand the green to Cav.

Emma Swift: Wow. And I thought yesterday was close. #chapeau @marcelkittel for never giving up!

Matt Taggart: So Kittel's learned to snipe as well?

Andrew Harvey: Us lot on Reddit thought that would be too hard for Kittel, so I took him out of my fantasy team... Whoops

  4. Yellow jerseypublished at 16:29 British Summer Time 5 July 2016

I've had a glance down the stage result - and it seems all the GC contenders got home safely in the peloton, so no massive time shifts.

    Chris Froome was 37th.

Peter Sagan, who came in third today, adds some bonus time to his haul to go 12 seconds clear in the overall race.

Winner Marcel Kittel (left in the photo): "I'm very emotional. It feels like my first stage win again. I'm very happy and proud because the team was fighting for this win. To win a stage like this - I can't believe it."

  7. McLay the manpublished at 16:22 British Summer Time 5 July 2016

New Zealand-born, Leicester-raised Fortuneo rider Dan McLay is having quite the Tour so far, isn't he?

He had two ninth-placed finishes in the first three stages and today he was a wonderful seventh.

  8. No joy for Cavpublished at 16:15 British Summer Time 5 July 2016

No victory and 29th stage win for Mark Cavendish on Tynwald Day. He came in eighth.

Jess Parsons: WHAT a sprint finish! That was absolutely hectic, didn't think a photo finish could get any closer than yday-Cracking from Kittel!

My word. You can barely separate those two with your favourite filter paper.

  13. Kittel clinches itpublished at 16:06 British Summer Time 5 July 2016

If this stage was 10cm longer, Bryan Coquard would have won this. The Direct Energie man was coming through like a demon down the left of Kittel.

There's a bit of argy-bargy as they bang elbows together - and it's by the finest of margins that the German holds on.

Kittel falls to the ground and holds his head in his hands. He musters the strength to raise a fist. Emotional scenes.

    Is this closer than yesterday?

    We need another photo finish.

It's Marcel Kittel who has it!

Kittel and Coquard, neck and neck. They cross together. Shoulder to shoulder. Who's won it?

    1km to go

It's still Lotto Soudal leading as we launch into a downhill stretch - Greipel will be enjoying this.

    2.4km to go

This finish was always going to be a bit of a mystery and plenty of riders are being caught out by islands and road dividers. It's put some out of kilter.
