Martin group trails by 24 seconds

Martin and Meintjes look to be the big GC losers today - their group is 24 seconds behind a front group that are laying it all down.

Edvald Boasson Hagen now looking one of the favourites for the stage, with Andre Greipel caught behind.

Michael Matthews and Greg van Avermaet - if he goes for a long dig - will also figure in the finale.

It's all coming apart at the seams for Quick-Step.

Ander Greipel has been gapped too! The German sprinter is caught behind with Martin's group, as is Kristoff.

Meanwhile, the likes of Michael Matthews and Edvald Boasson Hagen, looking for the stage win, are up front alongside the GC favourites.

In short, that means the front group will nail it to the finish now.

Looking very unlikely Dan Martin will get back now. Louis Meintjes is also caught behind with him.

Team Sky's Mikel Landa looks to have been shot out the back of the front group.

Dan Martin's group already 25 seconds behind the front group.

Team Sky riders getting fired out the back of it too.

  5. Martin distancedpublished at 16:06 British Summer Time 18 July 2017

Ireland's Dan Martin - fifth on GC - has been caught out and is not in the front group on the road.

That will motivate them to ride hard to increase the gap.

All the other favourites are up there, including Froome, Aru, Bardet, Uran and Yates.

Terrible day for Quick-Step, with Martin dropped and Kittel completely out of it. Martin perhaps missing those team-mate who stayed back with Kittel.

Sky are at the front of the race now and applying some real pressure. Chris Froome in the thick of it.

    15km to go

Here come the splits and panic ripples through the peloton.

It looked like Alberto Contador hit the deck but it turns out to be his Trek team-mate Jarlinson Pantano. Looked a nasty one, hope the Colombian is OK.

Fabio Aru was caught behind the first split but put in a tremendous turn to make it up to Chris Froome's group up front.

Marcel Kittel's group are now over nine minutes behind the peloton.

  9. Postpublished at 15:58 British Summer Time 18 July 2017

It's all a bit nervous in the peloton as teams constantly jostle and battle to be on the front, everyone wary of each other.

But no explosive splits so far...

Astana are having a far better day in service of Fabio Aru - his sometimes absent team-mates now hitting the front with 20km to go, helping keep the Italian out of trouble.

Andrew Harvey: If there are serious crosswinds and some echelons form, you can count on Belgian teams and riders to be in the right position.

The terrain and climate in Belgium ensure their riders have to be adept at riding in strong crosswinds.

Another change of direction coming up in a few kilometres.

Team Sky head the wrong way round a roundabout - or at least the longer way round - and drop down the peloton.

Oh, they've done it again. They will be strong enough to bring Chris Froome back up the front now but those are the type of mistakes that can see you caught out if there are splits.

Sure enough, Froome is back up front again now.

Into the last 25km of stage 16.

Team Sky are assembled on the right side of the road, yellow jersey Chris Froome tucked just about in the first third of riders in the peloton.

No frights for him or the overall favourites so far today.

Sunweb still driving matters on the front.

Here is his very technical view of the run-in to the line.

Will he get his wish of crosswinds?

Strong winds out there but it's crucially a headwind at the moment - which allows the peloton to ride in the typical one rider behind each other formation.

A shift to crosswinds and this could split apart very, very quickly.

  18. 30km to gopublished at 15:41 British Summer Time 18 July 2017

All the general classification favourites are right up the front of this peloton to avoid getting left out of the front echelon, should one form.

Smart riding by the all the favourites so far but they can't afford to lose concentration.

  19. Trek attackpublished at 15:37 British Summer Time 18 July 2017

Just as a Team Sky rider is dealing with a food bag, Alberto Contador's Trek team launch an attack up the right, trying to push the pace and perhaps create some splits.

They're marked out for now but expect plenty more of those digs to happen in the run in.

The peloton continue to set a high pace as they surge towards the finale of what has been a very day of racing.

That's not going to help - a pinch point as the road narrows and Dimension Data's Serge Pauwels hits the deck.

Not a serious crash but horrid misfortune for Pauwels.
