"It's been a massive search for this victory and we had to work very hard for it."

Philipsen went early for the line, and just about held off Wout van Aert by about a wheel. Mads Pedersen was third.

    4km to go

Thomas and Gougeard are 10 seconds clear but they are not going to make it... now Thomas goes it alone, but this chase is only going to end one way - with a bunch sprint.

    5.5km to go

Wout van Aert has moved up the pack, keeping close to another fast man, Mads Pedersen, than taking over at the front himself.

    7km to go

Vingegaard and Pogacar are near the front of peloton but it is still Ineos who are doing the hard work. The gap is coming down...15 seconds to the escape duo.

    9km to go.

    Who wants this?

Ineos Grenadiers are the only team who are organised, and they aren't even bothered about the stage win - they just want to keep Geraint Thomas safe after the chaos that has affected so many riders on this stage.

  18. Postpublished at 16:38 British Summer Time 17 July 2022

    10km to go

The gap to the front two goes up again, to 29 seconds. If this carries on, Benjamin Thomas and Gougeard might be scenting again victory soon.

A brief reduction in pace from the peloton... they are planning their next move, because none of the dedicated sprinters' teams have got the numbers to organise anything. The gap to the front two goes up again, up to 18, 19, 20 seconds.

So we are going to get a bunch sprint in Carcassonne... who do you fancy?
