    182km to go

The flag is dropped, and the racing starts for real - with a few riders trying, and failing, to break away.

Who will launch the first serious attack of this year's Tour? It's probably going to be a climber because the first King of the Mountains points are up for grabs almost immediately, inside the first 14km at Cote de Laukiz.

  3. The riders are on the roadpublished at 11:43 British Summer Time 1 July 2023

This bit, through the neutralised zone, is a procession before the racing starts. It won't be long now though. The flag is due to drop in about 10 minutes.

  5. Ready for Basque off...published at 11:32 British Summer Time 1 July 2023

Here we go then. The proper racing hasn't quite started yet but the riders are on the road and will be pedalling gently through the neutralised zone in Bilbao for the next 25 minutes or so, after a nice bit of traditional Basque dancing at the start line.

  6. Today's stage - a tough one for starterspublished at 11:28 British Summer Time 1 July 2023

Bilbao is where today's first stage finishes too... after a quite a few bumps in the road. This is going to be a tough, hilly day skirting around the city.

The 182km route, which starts at the eye catching Guggenheim Museum in a few minutes' time, includes over 3,000 metres of vertical gain on a loop out to the Bay of Biscay coastline.

The spiky Pike Bidea climb, 10km from the city-centre finish, is one of five categorised climbs on a stage that is likely to favour the puncheurs - riders who enjoy short but steep climbs.

  7. Only 3,404km to go...published at 11:25 British Summer Time 1 July 2023

Right now though, the Tour's finish line on the Champs Elysees is a distant dream for the 176 riders who are about to begin this year's Tour.

They are not even in France at the moment, because this year's race starts in Spain - Bilbao, at the heart of Basque Country, to be precise.
