Ninth set: Van Gerwen 1-2 Cross (4-4)

Poor from Cross, he bottled that.

He hits single 19 and misses double eighteen for the set.

MVG walks up the oche and wins the leg on double seven.

Momentum is changing far far too quickly in this match.

Ninth set: Van Gerwen 0-1 Cross (4-4)

I can't type fast enough. Someone tell them to slow down!

Rob Cross with a 12 darter and he's ahead in the ninth.

He's forgotten the 3-0 set already.

  9. MVG levels at 4-4published at 23:26 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2017

Eighth set: Van Gerwen 3-0 Cross (4-4)

From 156, he can only leave 112. And it doesn't go.

Cross up to the oche for double 20, but NO. He misses double tops and then two darts at double 10.

MVG looks to be repairing his darts, but he takes the set on double 16. DONE.

  10. Postpublished at 23:25 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2017

Eighth set: Van Gerwen 2-0 Cross (3-4)

But he can't catch a break.

Two darts in the T20, and his third dart knocks one out. That's two on the floor.

Maybe if he wasn't so accurate...

MVG leaves 156 after nine darts, can he finish off the set?

MVG is ahead on the 180 front. We've hit 21 in total for this match.

MVG can't take out 170, Rob Cross can only make a dent in 157, and MVG is back to finish on double 18.

Another swift leg, and we're up and running in the eighth set.

This is crunch time for the defending champion, and he knows it.

Who's going to win this? What time will this match finish?

I can't call it, but I'm going for after midnight. (I'm not leaving at midnight, just to be clear)

Cross needs a 126 out to break MVG.

Treble 19, treble 19 and DOUBLE SIX.

    THAT IS FANTASTIC.

Cross hit 161 to take the sixth set, and has now sunk 124 for the seventh.

    MVG trails Rob Cross 4-3.

  15. Postpublished at 23:13 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2017

Seventh set: Van Gerwen 1-2 Cross (3-3)

After a mediocre leg, Cross hits a 177 to leave 86.

He misses double 16, misses double eight, and MVG storms in to hit tops for the leg.

No whitewash in this set then. Cross can't hold his throw.

  16. Postpublished at 23:11 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2017

Seventh set: Van Gerwen 0-2 Cross (3-3)

    WHAT A LEG.

    Cross hits 140, 140, 177 before checking out 44.

That's a break of throw and a 2-0 lead in the seventh set. This man is a machine.

  17. Postpublished at 23:10 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2017

Seventh set: Van Gerwen 0-1 Cross (3-3)

MVG is having to chase this match once again.

Rob Cross looks like he's made a mess of the finish, but finds double 16 on his last dart.

Cross is getting vocal, MVG is pulling up his socks.

This could be a long night.

  18. Van Gerwen levels at 3-3published at 23:08 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2017

Sixth set: Van Gerwen 3-0 Cross (3-3)

And we're even. MVG pegs it back with a stupidly fast set.

No time to blink at the moment.

  19. Postpublished at 23:06 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2017

Sixth set: Van Gerwen 2-0 Cross (2-3)

Van Gerwen is hugging that treble now. Six perfect darts and yet again the world champion is on a nine-dart leg.

But this is not the moment. He leaves 48 after nine darts with Cross on 104. The former electrician can't take it out but MVG misses yet more darts. That's 28 at a double in this match.

Cross has one dart at double 16, but he's nowhere near.

MVG finds it and rounds up a sloppy leg.

Sixth set: Van Gerwen 1-0 Cross (2-3)

And he's off the perfect star, sort of.

MVG misses double 12 but back he comes for double six and the leg is wrapped up.

    That'll do.
