  2. Tributes: Iranian cyclist Bahman Golbarnezhad diespublished at 22:30 British Summer Time 17 September 2016

Dame Sarah Storey, speaking to the BBC: “I am absolutely devastated to hear of a colleague who hasn’t made it home from the Games. Everyone expects to come home from a Games and it's no real consolation that he died doing something he loved. It’s just an horrendous thing. It couldn’t be any worse.

"Thoughts are with his family, his friends, the whole Iranian team. There are no words that can make it feel better.Everyone really, really feels for them.

“I wasn’t aware until I’d left the course and come back up towards the Media Centre. It started to break then and just as I was walking through the door here I heard that he hadn’t made it.

"I was sat opposite him in the pits this morning. I know who he is but I’ve never spoken to him. It still hits you really really hard.”

The Iranian Paralympic Committee has confirmed that cyclist Bahman Golbarnezhad, aged 48, has died following injuries sustained in a crash in today's C4 road race in Rio.

“The section of mountain where the crash occurred was present in the Olympic course but it was very much earlier on in the race to the area we saw that awful crash involving Dutch cyclist Annemiek van Vleuten.

"She, thankfully, survived the incident and is back racing again now, but it was a similar stretch of road without it being the same.

"There was a curb at the side of the road and, when you think back, our own Chris Boardman really did express quite a lot of concern, external about whether he thought the curbs sticking out of the side of the road were safe if there was an incident and today it looks as though Chris’s worst fears I think have come true.”
