Nicholas Roscow:, external People gripe about exclusions of players like Suarez, but who does he replace? Good this season but not top three forward of 2013.

Richard Morris:, external Xavi, Ramos and Alves are so lucky because they all had very average seasons here in Spain. Kompany, Toure and Suarez unlucky

The Afghanistan Football Federation, which has helped continue promote the sport in a country ravaged by war, wins the award given to "persons or institutions for their fair play, an issue that has always been of crucial significance to world football's governing body".

Rem from London: Can't believe people are sceptical of Messi being in the team of the year. He was La Liga's top goal scorer by a mile but played near two months less than everyone else. Yes Bayern ripped Barca apart but Dortmund also ripped Madrid apart. What's debatable for me is Ramos inclusion and no Tourè???! Suarez should be there next year.

Angus, Sheffield: Ramos is a liability. Hummels or Dante for me. Busquets has comfortably been the best Barcelona midfielder this year. And surely Bale warranted a place. Ridiculous decisions.

Noah in Yeovil: As well as Suarez, where is Bale? Real Madrid didn't pay all that money for nothing, he should be in there.

Brazil forward Marta (pictured above) and male counterpart Neymar listen intently as they hang on to every word said by legendary compatriot Pele. The three-time World Cup winner is joined by Cafu, who helped A Selecao lift the 1994 edition.

"The three wins mean almost the same. But the most important was the 1970 win because that was my last World Cup. I said to God 'Please I can not retire with a loss'. And he listened to me."

Plenty of head-nodding could be spotted in the crowd as Marco Sway stretched his vocals chords to the official 2014 World Cup anthem. But nobody plucked up the courage to bust out a few Samba sashes down the front. Disappointing.

Taj in Birmingham: Please explain how Iniesta, Xavi or even Messi make a world 11. Those three players were destroyed and ripped to shreds twice by Bayerns midfield.

Jacob: Still can't believe Luis Suarez is not in world team. Especially considering his extra summer holiday, 20-odd goals is unbelievable. The selection has been dodgy for the last few years.

Jay in Southampton: One of the conditions of being in the team of the year is that the team should play in a summer friendly together against another top team. Who wouldn't want to see that?

  8. BALLON D'OR NOMINEE - RONALDOpublished at 18:18 Greenwich Mean Time 13 January 2014

What else can you say about Cristiano Ronaldo? The former Manchester United man is a goal machine, bagging 66 goals in 56 games in 2013 - including all competitions, for club and country.

If that wasn't amazing enough, take into account his match-winning hat-trick which sent Portugal to the World Cup finals and 15 assists throughout the calendar year.

He's never injured, he can head it, score from 30 yards with both feet. He's got the lot...

  9. BALLON D'OR NOMINEE - RIBERYpublished at 18:18 Greenwich Mean Time 13 January 2014

Bayern Munich had a sensational year, winning trophy after trophy, and Fracnk Ribery was at the heart of most of it.

The French winger scored 12 goals and collected 14 assists in 28 Bundesliga appearances during 2013, and helped France to qualify for the World Cup via the play-offs.

  10. BALLON D'OR NOMINEE - MESSIpublished at 18:14 Greenwich Mean Time 13 January 2014

Now is an opportune time - as we have a musical interlude courtesy of Swiss-Brazilian beat artist Marc Sway - to have a quick glance at the three nominees for the main prize.

First up is Barcelona and Argentina forward Lionel Messi. The 26-year-old enjoyed another goal-den year, despite missing the final six weeks with a thigh injury.

He netted 42 goals in just 45 appearances for club and country, while helping the Catalan giants win La Liga and the Spanish Cup.

  11. MEN'S COACH OF THE YEAR - Jupp Heynckespublished at 18:11 Greenwich Mean Time 13 January 2014

No surprise here. Jupp Heynckes, who retired after leading Bayern Munich to the treble of German Bundesliga, German Cup and Champions League, beats Ferguson and Klopp to the prize.

"It means an awful lot to pick up this award at the end of my career," says Heynckes. "It is not just down to me but the whole club of Bayern Munich."

England boss Roy Hodgson shuffles on to the stage to open the golden envelope with the name of the 2013 women's world coach of the year. It is Germany coach Silvia Neid, who says she is "blessed to work with talent I've worked with over the last 12 months".

  14. WOMEN'S COACH OF THE YEARpublished at 18:07 Greenwich Mean Time 13 January 2014

Back to the prizes and next we have the gong for the women's coach of the year. The chosen three nominees are:

    Ralf Kellermann (Wolfsburg)

    Silvia Neid (Germany)

    Pia Sundhage (Sweden)

  15. EUSEBIO TRIBUTEpublished at 18:05 Greenwich Mean Time 13 January 2014

The Zurich arena falls silent as a video showing the achievements of ex-Benfica and Portugal striker Eusebio, who died aged 71 last week, is played to the crowd. A rapturous round of applause breaks out at the end, with the camera panning to his countryman Cristiano Ronaldo, who looks rather emotional.

  16. Postpublished at 18:02 Greenwich Mean Time 13 January 2014

Former Samba striker Ronaldo confidently predicts a Brazil v Germany final at the summer's World Cup finals. "Everybody would love to see this as a footballing event and would give Germany a chance of revenge," says the buck-toothed one.

Ronaldo, the 'original one' to those old enough to have watched football in the 1990s, is joined on stage by another pair of Brazilian superstars - model Adriana Lima and Barcelona forward Neymar. Lima insists her country will be "warm" hosts at this summer's World Cup as she brings a touch of glamour to the Zurich ceremony. But could she do it on a cold Tuesday night in Stoke?

  18. GET INVOLVEDpublished at 17:56 Greenwich Mean Time 13 January 2014

Ben Geffen:, external No Premier League player in FIFPRO World XI yet again. I'd like to see half these players visit the Britannia Stadium on a cold night.

James Grech:, external How Ramos makes the team I don't know - 142 yellow cards and 18 red do not make a good defender. Should take lessons from Lahm.

Cletus:, external How Yaya Toure did not make the FIFPRO X1 is beyond me.

  19. PRESIDENTIAL AWARDpublished at 17:54 Greenwich Mean Time 13 January 2014

Sepp Blatter and Jacques RoggeImage source, Getty Images

"I'll be brief," says Rogge in his acceptance speech. "Because everyone wants to know whose name is in that golden envelope." Jacques knows the score. The clock is ticking on this military-style Fifa operation.

But the Belgian does have time to say that he is "confident" that the Sochi Winter Olympics and the Fifa World Cup in Brazil will be a success.

  20. PRESIDENTIAL AWARDpublished at 17:50 Greenwich Mean Time 13 January 2014

Belgian? Became a yachtsman and represented his country on the waves in the Olympics? Also, played international rugby. Any ideas who the winner of the Presidential Award is? Nope, me neither.

Thankfully, Fifa president Sepp Blatter is here to tell us - it is former president of the International Olympic Committee, Jacques Rogge.
