  3. Goals, goals, goals...published at 19:33 British Summer Time 17 June 2014

In South Africa four years ago, 25 goals were scored in the first round of group fixtures, an average of 1.56 per game.

So far in Brazil, 47 goals have been scored in 15 games, an average of 3.13 per game. It's raining goals.

For comparison, these were the tallies after first round of games in last four World Cups, since it expanded to 32 teams in 1998:

    2010 - 25 (1.56) per game)

    2006 - 39 (2.44)

    2002 - 46 (2.88)

    1998 - 38 (2.38)

So we're guaranteed at least three goals here. Almost.

"Brazil have a great record here and a great relationship with the fans in Fortaleza, I expect them to really take the game to Mexico in the opening 15 minutes.

"I think Mexico will play with five at the back, much as Costa Rica did against Uruguay. Mexico are even better on the counter because their wing-backs get forward more. The service for Giovani dos Santos and Oribe Peralta will be paramount for them.

"If Brazil come and really press them high up the pitch, which I think they will do, they will be forced to move the ball quickly. We'll see if they are able to do that."

"Both sets of teams are now on the field down in front of me, warming up. The atmosphere has been building in the city for the past few days and there are around 6,000 vocal Mexico fans inside this fantastic stadium.

"Fortaleza has, however, been waiting for this one. They don't see the Selecao all that often up here, but when they do, they make it count. Cafu, Zico, Branca all in the rows in front of me for this game. Watch out for the national anthem, promises to be a bit special as it was here 12 months ago."

Mexico may have a good recent record against Brazil - but there's a reason why the hosts are favourites to waltz through Group A.

Brazil have lost just one of their 34 World Cup matches in the first round/group stages since 1970, a 2-1 defeat to Norway in their final group game of 1998.

I recall Denilson (not the Arsenal man) throwing in a load of lollipops down the wing in that one, a game which was dead for Brazil as they had already qualified for the next stage.

"I'm slightly surprised by the selection. We watched Ramires last season at Chelsea of course and we know his strengths, he will run all day. But in terms of technique he is a long way behind Willian. What he is fantastic at though, is breaking at speed, which maybe will be useful against Mexico, who do attack and like to play with a high tempo.

"Oscar seemed to tire at the end of last season, understandably given he has had two or three years of pretty much constant football. But we didn't see him playing on the wing for Chelsea, where he played for Brazil in the match against Croatia. I thought he was the best player on the pitch in that game."

"I've just spoken to Neymar's barber, Fabio Benetti, the official hairdresser of the Brazil team, which is a great job title to have.

"It's nothing like Ronaldo's bizarre barnet from 2002 but Brazil's star striker and footballing icon will be sporting a sharp new haircut for tonight's game against Mexico.

"Benetti told BBC Sport that Neymar asked him for 'something blonde and modern for a special occasion' and says there were no signs that the expectation on his shoulders at this tournament is affecting him.

"'He was very happy and laughing a lot, not nervous at all,' Benetti said. 'Neymar doesn't experiment much with his hair, though. It is Dani Alves who does that - he has gone for a silver look for the Mexico game'."

Mexico beat Brazil at London 2012Image source, Getty Images

No team has beaten Brazil in the 21st Century as often as Mexico, who have managed six wins and two draws in 12 meetings during that period. The Mexicans also won the last meeting of the 20th Century, in the 1999 Confederations Cup final.

But it was the 2012 Olympic final defeat that hurts Brazil the most, even though it was not a recognised senior international. Oscar, one of five first-team regulars for Brazil who played in that final, admits: "Of course I was very sad. It is a medal that Brazil have never won and we lost the final.

"We know that Mexico are a good team, they always give Brazil a hard time and it won't be any different when we play in the next match. They play the ball out from the back well and are very good on the counter-attack."
