Another Japan attack, another glaring miss. Atsuto Uchida - who became Japan's youngest World Cup scorer in a 2008 qualifier - has a reputation as a fast, attacking right-back. But he can't finish for toffee. He slides the ball wide after some awful defending from Greece, who tried to walk the ball out of their area.

Oh my days - terrible miss from Japan. Yoshito Okubo arrives at the far post to tap a low cross into the empty Greek net. But somehow he manages to skew it over the goal. Go on and stand in the naughty corner with Sergio Busquets, young man.

Andrew Tarpey:, external Referee needs to toughen up here, he's just falling for the Greek players' time-wasting and giving too many soft free kicks.

  4. Postpublished at 00:24 British Summer Time 20 June 2014

The Greeks are not known for their attacking endeavour, having failed to score in six defeats in their last seven World Cup matches. Bizarrely they have shown more intent since going down to 10 men, a right-wing cross easily gathered by Japan stopper Orestis Karnezis

    Former England defender Martin Keown

"Theofanis Gekas gets up fantastically well, Eiji Kawashima though showed great reflexes. Gekas' header just came slightly off a Japan defender, which took a little bit of sting out of it.

"Greece are just looking to keep it tight and grab a goal if they can."

Theofanis Gekas is one of the shortest men in the Greek squad, but his lack of height doesn't stop him getting above the Japan defence at a corner. Unfortunately for the ex-Leicester man, Japan keeper Eiji Kawashima is equal to it.

  7. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 00:17 British Summer Time 20 June 2014

It's been an 'annus horribilis' for Japan midfielder Shinji Kagawa, who could hardly buy a game for Manchester United last season. He found himself dropped after the opening defeat against Ivory Coast, but here he comes to prove a point. Yuya Osaka is the man hooked.

  8. YELLOW CARDpublished at 00:15 British Summer Time 20 June 2014

Greece are trying their best to wrestle (literally) Honduras's tag of 'The Dirtiest Team at the 2014 World Cup'. Giorgios Samaras is the latest culprit and he doesn't even look ashamed of hacking down a Japanese opponent. Booked.

Wait - here's a chance. Japan win a free-kick 30 yards out. Yashuhito Endo, a half-time substitute for the Blue Samurai, swings it into the mixer but it's too strong for his waiting team-mates.

Five minutes into the second half and there's nothing to report. Nothing at all.

Andy:, external Japan are comfortable in possession and move the ball well, just lack that killer instinct in final third.

    Former England defender Martin Keown

"How cheeky would that have been if that had gone in! Certainly worth an effort, the Japan goalkeeper had his back to him."

  13. KICK-OFFpublished at 00:03 British Summer Time 20 June 2014

Cheeky, quick-thinking from Giorgios Samaras! The Celtic forward boots the ball goalwards straight from the centre spot. The crowd gasps, Japan keeper Eiji Kawashima panics, Samaras hold his breath - and there's an all round 'oooh' as the ball drops wide. That's if it was a shot and not a defensive clearance...

Should we have been so surprised by Konstantinos Katsouranis blowing his fuse? Probably not. That was the Greece skipper's third red card in 16 games for club and country. The man's a liability.

Check out Katsouranis's red card in the 'Highlights' tab at the top of this page.

The two teams are about as familiar with each other as Leeds United fans are with their new manager. Which means they haven't got a clue.

These sides have only ever met once before, and that was in the 2005 Confederations Cup when Japan nicked a 1-0 win. They would bite your hand off for that tonight.

"I was watching Konstantinos Mitroglou's lack of movement. Neither of the strikers looked interested or looked like gambling. Then he got injured again unfortunately."

Former AC Milan manager Clarence Seedorf

"The Greeks come up they put a wall in front of their goal and the Japanese aren't taking advantage of the space on the sides.

"Honda is a bit disappointing. His position in the middle, he's always on the right spot. He's always far from the goal and is playing the ball backwards. I always played him at Milan. He's got talent and a great left foot."

    Former England captain Rio Ferdinand

"The first yellow card from Katsouranis was a really bad tackle, it was nasty. When you're on a yellow you don't need to make that tackle you need to stay on with your mates to try to get through the 90 minutes.

"Greece have looked better down to 10 men. It's forced them to play more expansive. Yuya Osako is quite bright and willing to take opportunities when they come."

Some news from my mole inside the Greek dressing room, who says that the message being given to the players is "σταθμεύσουν τα παλικάρια λεωφορείο". My Greek isn't the greatest so I'll run this through some online translation service...

Oh dear. It means 'Park the bus'. Just as we suspected.

Ian:, external Starting to wonder what Shinji Kagawa has done to football managers, because he doesn't seem to be able to get a game for love nor money.

Des:, external Kagawa should have stayed at Dortmund, perfect fit together. Massively lost his way since.

James:, external There hasn't been a single goal direct from a free kick in the World Cup so far. I blame the spray - it gets in the way.
