Five minutes plus stoppage time for Everton to find a leveller before the break. Toffees striker Nikita Parris looks the person in a blue shirt most likely to make a breakthrough, using her strength to win a free-kick in the Arsenal half. But Andy Spence's side waste the opportunity as a hopeful ball runs through to Arsenal keeper Emma Byrne.

Co-commentator Jen O'Neill, editor of shekicks.net, on BBC Radio 5 live: "Everton's Alex Greenwood is the young player of the year but Danielle Carter is proving difficult to handle. She has such poise and she's hungry for a goal this afternoon."

BBC Sport's Tony Leighton at Stadium MK: "At 35 Kelly Smith is the oldest player on the pitch, but she has run the game in the opening half-hour. She's playing in her usual number 10 role but often pushing ahead of striker Shinobu Ohno to probe and push the Everton defence. Her superbly struck free-kick has capped a fine opening by the England star."

Danielle Carter has only bagged one goal so far this season - and that was in the semi-final win against Chelsea. But the lively winger, who has been one of Arsenal's brightest attacking sparks, almost doubles the Gunners' lead. Carter shows some nifty footwork on the right touchline to break clear and, as the Everton defenders continue to backpedal, she blasts a low shot just past the right-hand post.

Arsenal boss Shelley Kerr looks tense as she sits, hands on mouth, in the Gunners dug-out. All going to plan in her farewell match, though, as Arsenal keeper Emma Byrne legs it out of her goalmouth to boot clear a long Everton ball.

Everton chairman Bill Kenwright is enjoying the action - but not the result - from his vantage point in the Stadium MK stands. Arsenal enjoy another period of dominance as we pass the half-hour mark, without being able to test Toffees keeper Rachel Brown-Finnis.

Kelly Smith might be entering the twilight of her career, but she still poses plenty of problems for opposing defenders with that devilish left peg. The Arsenal skipper delicately picks out team-mate Danielle Carter at the far post, and the winger's header loops on to the roof of the Everton net.

Another flurry of corners for Everton as they look to peg back the holders. Millie Turner gets half a yard on her marker to meet the delivery at the near post, only to loop a header over the crossbar. Moments later, Arsenal keeper Emma Byrne is called upon to punch clear another out-swinging corner. Promising response from the Toffees.

What have Everton got in response then? Forward Danielle Parris uses her pace to great effect again, stretching the Arsenal backline before she wins a corner. The Toffees are a threat from set-pieces, but Brooke Chaplen cannot keep her header down as the ball flies harmlessly over the bar.

And Arsenal skipper Kelly Smith makes Everton pay. The England international pings the 20-yard free-kick into the top left corner with superb accuracy - Rachel Brown-Finnis didn't have a prayer of saving that one. Advantage Arsenal.

Arsenal are beginning to use their vast experience to take control, and have another opportunity on the edge of the Everton area. Toffees left-back Alex Greenwood is left for dead by the pace of Danielle Carter and can only hack her down with an unnecessary challenge. Kelly Smith stands over the ball...

Ooof, the Everton post is still rattling. Arsenal's Rachel Yankey - England's most capped player - smashes a thunderous first-time effort from outside of the area which beats Everton keeper Rachel Brown-Finnis all ends up. But luckily for the Toffees veteran, she sees Yankey's shot cannon back off her right-hand post.

Everton goalkeeper Rachel Brown-Finnis - who remarkably played in the 1996 FA Women's Cup final aged 15 - shows she is alert in the opening stages to deny Arsenal. The veteran stopper flies from her goal-line to meet a teasing slide-rule pass from Arsenal skipper Kelly Smith, just ahead of Gunners winger Danielle Carter.
