Former England and Liverpool midfielder John Barnes on Luis Suarez's ban: "It is a punishment I expected. I didn't know if it could impact on his club situation but it does.

"There are systems in place to deal with these issues and it is difficult setting precedents in these situations. From Fifa's perspective, nine games is a long time in international football. His World Cup is over and it could be another 18 months before he plays for Uruguay again. It has been dealt with. Will he do it again? We don't know but all Fifa can do is enforce the rules of the articles they specify.

"Will Liverpool say they want to sell him or wait until the ban is over, only they can answer that question."

Fifa vice president Jim Boyce, speaking about Luis Suarez's four-month ban: "I think the punishment handed out to Luis Suarez is fully justified.

"Hopefully he will have learnt that this type of behaviour cannot be tolerated."

BBC pundit Mark Lawrenson on Luis Suarez's four-month ban: "It's just a case of 'here we go again', isn't it?

"I don't really think that the punishment fits the crime. How do you explain to your lad who's a football fan exactly what Luis Suarez keeps doing?

"He is now obviously a persistent offender and I thought actually the ban would have been much harsher."

Former Chelsea winger Pat Nevin on what happens next for Luis Suarez: "Liverpool is a fabulous club, it is a proud club and it does not need someone doing what he has done.

"There are lots of hints about Barcelona and Real Madrid being interested in him even before this incident and it probably makes it easier for a move to happen.

"Football does not have morality when it comes to these kinds of matters. If they were interested in him and decided against a move because of this, I would be astounded."

Former Chelsea winger Pat Nevin: "Fifa had to make a quick move on it because there is another game coming up. They also had to take into consideration another thought, which was if he decided to appeal. Do they allow him to play when it is under appeal? Had he gone down [the appeal] route it would have been a massive embarrassment for Fifa. They needed to get it sorted out and move on as quickly as possible and I applaud them for that.

"The ban could have been longer. I was guessing six months, but they are probably not far off with what they have given."

South American football expert Tim Vickery on BBC Radio 5 live: "It is a more severe ban than I thought it would be. I thought it would be restricted to this World Cup. Uruguay's task now is to focus on the upcoming Colombia game without Luis Suarez.

"In Uruguay there is not the moral outrage that the English press deals with this issue so there is no question that once his ban is served he will be selected by Uruguay. He is out of the Copa America next year and will probably miss the first of the World Cup qualifiers on the road to Russia.

""I think the focus in Liverpool and the Uruguay FA in the long term will be dealing with the problem because this is clearly a repeat problem. This is an individual who has a self control problem. You hope that this will mean people around him will stop living in denial and help deal with the problem."
