Andrew in York: No player should be appointed captain - it makes them an automatic pick regardless of form. The captain should be picked out of the players available each time a squad is called together.

Simon: Rooney has not been 'world class' for five years. He runs around a lot but his significant contributions are, at best, sporadic. When did you last drool over something he did? He should go never mind being made captain.

J in Kent: Should Rooney be captain? No. A captain should be someone with the best view of the game and good at reading it. Goalie, centre-back or centre mid. Lineker turned it down and recommended Adams. I vote Hart, mainly because he was the only one that same with true passion.

"Suarez case has potential to develop. Imagine if gets hefty ban, appeals, plays v Colombia, gets goals that win game. Fifa don't need that."

France right-back Bacary Sagna has dismissed suggestions that his recent move from Arsenal to Manchester City was motivated by greed, insisting it was only to do with personal ambition.

Sagna, 31, left Arsenal on a free transfer at the end of last season after seven years at the club and promptly signed for the Premier League champions on a three-year contract.

"I'm going to clear everything out, because I keep reading (claims) I left for money, I'm greedy, whatever," he said after France's 0-0 draw against Ecuador.

"All I want to say is I stayed in Arsenal with the same contract since 2008. I never asked for (more) money, so people who think that it's for money, it's not. I just wanted to change and boost my career, and I think it was about time."

Tom Walker:, external Rooney should get his place on skill alone and not 'who he is' as Shearer mentions. He hasn't produced for a while.

Mark Gennoe:, external Yes Rooney should be the next Eng captain. Though I think if Lallana is to become an England player of the future then him.

Peter Campbell:, external Not a big fan of attacking players being captain, too much looking back at play when should be focusing on getting forward.

Valbuena's agent Jean-Pierre Bernes told French radio station Europe 1: "It is true that given his performances, and if there is the opportunity with a club, it is something we will examine and Marseille as well.

"Nothing is set, there is no destination fixed, there are contact with certain clubs in different European leagues."

Coach Alberto Zaccheroni resigned after his side failed to qualify for the last 16.

Hasebe told Fifa.com:, external "In the football world, it's all about results. After four years of effort, we could not achieve positive results in the end. I feel responsible as the captain.

"I am proud of everyone in our team, not only including the players but also the coaching staff and of course the manager. But, in the end, we could not get through the group stage. So I feel very sorry for all the supporters."

Rob: I don't see what all the fuss is with Rooney, both England's goals were down to him and he handled pressure well. He should be captain of England as he was the only player who delivered for England this tournament.

Tom: Rooney is our best player, 4th best scorer ever and top scorer in World Cup qualifying. Plays his heart out and would be proud to captain the country. No brainer.

Former Germany Under-21 international Moritz Volz: "The feeling in Germany is slightly nervous because the draw with Ghana has taken away a lot of the enthusiasm that was created by the win over Portugal. But I think Germany are strong enough to overcome the US.

"I've been very surprised by Portugal, because I thought they would go as far as the final. The core of their team should have put them in a good position. They have been low in competiveness and togetherness."

Brasilia is home to around 2.8 million people, around a quarter of the population of Sao Paulo

Brasilia - which hosts Portugal v Ghana - is Brazil's capital and fourth most-populated city, but its construction only began in 1956.

Within four years, the city was founded and given capital status as Brazil aimed to shift power away from its former coastal capital Rio, to a more central location.

It has since become a hub of political and economic activity, with a population of about 2.8 million people.

Designed by the late Oscar Niemeyer - a man recognised as a key influence on modern architecture - Brasilia is the only city in the world constructed in the 20th century to have been declared a World Heritage site by Unesco.

Former Wales striker John Hartson: "I think it will be a lengthy ban. What's alarming about this is that both the Uruguay captain and Suarez's lawyer are saying there's a conspiracy against him. There's no conspiracy, there's no vendetta, you simply cannot bite on the football field.

"He's a fantastic player, some of his performances have been breathtaking.

"He's got previous, he's done it twice before. I'd love to hear from Brendan Rodgers, but even the Liverpool fans seem to be very disappointed in Suarez, a player they have backed to the hilt.

Alex: I don't understand what more fans want from Rooney. He plays with skill and desire which is more than can be said for majority of the squad.

Frank: There are no natural leaders in the England team so no obvious captain. They're all gobby before games with the press but mute on the pitch.

Midfielder Paul Pogba says France are still confident of being a force in the knockout stages despite being held to a draw by Ecuador in their final group match.

The South Americans held on for a 0-0 draw despite having Antonio Valencia sent off.

Juventus player Pogba said: "We played well and put in the performance that was expected of us, but we didn't get the result we deserved. All we lacked was a bit of a break in front of goal, that's all.

"I don't think this match will have any kind of negative effect on our confidence. We drew, we didn't lose. That's an important distinction. We can be satisfied with how we did overall and with our qualification for the knockout stages."

  16. How good is Lionel Messi?published at 10:35 British Summer Time 26 June 2014

    BBC Radio 5 live

Former Wales striker John Hartson: "He's frightening. We're running out of superlatives. He's fast, he's got that low centre of gravity, he can score. He very rarely goes over when he's kicked. He's the consummate professional. He can win games on his own and he's a fantastic player.

"There's been the theory that he has to do it at a World Cup, like Maradona and Pele did - these players that have gone down in history as the greatest. Now Messi is showing is he is capable of doing it at the very top level.

"You wonder how far Argentina would go without him. Defensively, they look shaky. He seems to be carrying the side, but you could say that about Neymar and Brazil."

Uruguay have spent the past 24 hours or so rallying around their star striker Luis Suarez.

But it seems not everyone associated with the national team is on his side after his alleged bite on Giorgio Chiellini.

Alcides Ghiggia, the man who scored the winning goal for Uruguay in the 1950 World Cup against Brazil, says Suarez deserves a ban.

"I think a ban could be applied here because it's unheard of," Ghiggia, 87, said.

"I don't know what this kid thinks and what goes through his head. Whether you're Uruguayan or of an other nationality, you always have to reproach these things on the field. This is not a war."
