    There was more than just the one World Cup match played on Tuesday night. Argentina beat Switzerland in a turgid match which momentarily sparkled at the very end thanks to a bit of Lionel Messi magic.

    The two-time champions dominated possession, but were unable to break through until Angel Di Maria swept in Lionel Messi's pass.

    It was a remarkable conclusion to a match that saw Argentina, rated among the favourites to win the World Cup, produce another distinctly average performance in neighbouring Brazil.

    Greece's players have written to the country's Prime Minister to ask that their World Cup bonuses are spent on a new training facility, external in the country.

    The current training base in Athens is due to be closed and the national team's players have been told Antonio Samaras will do "everything possible" to respond to the request.

    Americans watched their side's glorious exit from the 2014 World Cup. As many as 14 million workers were predicted to down tools to watch the match, costing the US economy more than $600m (£350m) in lost labour productivity, according to an estimate by Yahoo Finance.

    "None of that really matters to me," he said. "I signed up to do that, to put my face in front of balls. If I had no saves or 20 saves it doesn't mean any more or less. It hurts when we lose.

    "We dreamed and we fell short of our dream but we got out of the group of death playing well and came up against a top Belgium side.
