Howard's acrobatics between the sticks against Belgium has made him a national hero and football fans on Twitter were quick to praise his record-breaking performance.

But it wasn't as simple as that, wasn't as prosaic as that, because the USA's stay in Brazil only came to an end after what some are describing as one of the great extra-time games of all time, and the greatest single performance of all time.
