"The sun is rising on a very big day in Rio de Janeiro - the first match of this tournament at the legendary Maracana stadium. There are plenty of Bosnia-Hercegovina fans here to witness their nation's bow at a World Cup finals, but they are vastly outnumbered because it appears half of Argentina is here to cheer on Lionel Messi & co tonight."

High noon and here are your headlines:

England manager Roy Hodgson says he has "great confidence" his side can qualify for the last 16 of the World Cup despite defeat by Italy.

England captain Steven Gerrard says making the knockout stages is "certainly do-able".

Former England boss Graham Taylor says that he would deploy Wayne Rooney in a central position, because his performances in a wide role have been "a little worrying".

    BBC Sport presenter Gary Lineker

"Of the 14 teams we have seen so far, England had more shots on goal than any of them. Needless to say, conversion rate was not in the top 10.

"Even more stunning is that England's passing accuracy ranks second, just behind Italy, but ahead of Spain, Holland and Brazil. Go boys!

"Here's another beauty. For passing accuracy in the opposition's half, England come out on top. Stats exclude crosses where England are last."

Nick, Peterborough: Let's face it, Rooney gave Baines no support, Italy doubled up on him. What did we create? Raheem our best player by a long way, did the Italian keeper have a string of saves to make NO!! Not good enough!

Nathan, Peterborough: Last night a brilliant game between two good sides, disappointed to lose, but very much like 2004, we need to win the next two. We played some brilliant football in those two must-win games, would love to see us do it again. Sterling taking over the 2004 Rooney role.

Jed, Oxford: I don't understand Rooney being on the wing. Most of Sterling's best work was on the flanks, and he was hopeles at closing down in the middle. Rooney central, Sterling to the wing. Jed, Oxford

Brentford goalkeeper Chic Brodie's career came to an abrupt end in October 1970 when he collided with a sheepdog which had run on to the pitch. Brodie shattered his kneecap while the dog got the ball.

"The dog might have been a small one, but it just happened to be a solid one," he reflected.

England midfielder Jordan Henderson has been full of praise for his club and international team-mate Raheem Sterling.

"We didn't know the team, but there were no surprises that Raheem started because he has been brilliant in the games, brilliant in training," said Henderson.

"I think he was outstanding. He got on the ball, was confident taking players on and played a big part in the goal."

Writing in the Guardian, football tactics expert Michael Cox says that although Wayne Rooney failure's to track back and cover the runs of Italy right-back Matteo Darmian left England exposed, it was also key to his side's only goal.

"Shortly after Claudio Marchisio opened the scoring, Darmian went on another scamper forward on the counter-attack," he explains., external

"Rooney now found himself in a position to break into the space Darmian had left behind. He charged forward, was found by Sterling's measured through-ball and provided an excellent left-footed cross, inviting Daniel Sturridge to half-volley into the net."

Former England midfielder Paul Scholes was frustrated by the role handed to former team-mate Wayne Rooney and called for him to be used in the centre-forward position.

"The disappointing thing was not the way Wayne Rooney played but where he was played," Scholes wrote in his blog for Paddy Power. "I don't blame Wayne one little bit but he was played in three different positions. He's without a doubt England's best goalscorer but he was played on the left, played on the right, then in the centre.

"Where's the confidence in Wayne to say: 'You're our main player. You're our centre forward'? If he plays there, he scores goals."

Lewin is far from the first to suffer a freak injury in football. In fact he treated one of the most famous.

His former employers Arsenal were celebrating winning the League Cup final against Sheffield Wednesday at Wembley in 1993 when captain Tony Adams hoisted Steve Morrow, scorer of the game's decisive goal, on to his shoulders.

The Northern Irishman did not stay there for long, however, slipping off and breaking his arm.

The most serious injury sustained by England in last night's defeat by Italy was to a member of the backroom staff.

Physio Gary Lewin dislocated his ankle as he leapt from the bench to celebrate Daniel Sturridge's goal.

"That was a very sad moment for us," said manager Roy Hodgson.

"In celebrating the goal he jumped up, landed on a water bottle and dislocated his ankle.''

"It was quite open - I did not expect it to be so stretched. England tried very hard but ultimately Italy showed how to play tournament football.

"The thing about Pirlo is he started his career as a number 10, but Carlo Ancelotti changed his position and he has matured a lot. Technically he has always been a good player and he retains the ball so well, but he plays simple football and there aren't many players like him in world football any more."
