"The traffic is choking in the streets around the Copacabana, with Argentina fans out in vast numbers. Some reports suggest 100,000 Argentines are here in Rio today and even as early as 6am this morning they were making their presence felt."

BBC commentator in Rio de Janeiro

Ollie Mogford: Do you think that Alexis Sanchez is a good signing for Arsenal?

Guy Mowbray: Absolutely. I think he has been unlucky to be the odd man out at Barcelona, but it is Arsenal's gain and another superb addition to the Premier League. What it means for the progression of more English talent is another question.

BBC TV commentator Guy Mowbray took some time out of his preparations for the World Cup final yesterday to answer a few of your questions, as submitted via our Facebook page.

Brazil's 4-1 victory over Italy in the 1970 World Cup final was a classic match. Their meeting in Pasadena in 1994 was not.

History, though, was made. It was the first World Cup final to be decided on penalties, after a scoreless 120 minutes. Both sides missed their first kick, but Brazil held their nerve after that - and victory was sealed when Roberto Baggio, Italy's best player during the tournament, failed with his side's final penalty.

The Brazil team dedicated their victory to three-time Formula One champion Ayrton Senna, who had died in a crash at the San Marino Grand Prix two-and-a-half months earlier.

A reminder we are currently on 170 goals for the 2014 World Cup. The consensus that this is the best tournament ever will only be bolstered if the all-time scoring record is beaten.

France '98 on 171 stands as the most prolific World Cup for goal scoring. Two more anyone?

Four years after meeting in Mexico City, Argentina and West Germany once again made it into the final - but this time it was not a classic encounter.

The only goal of the game came five minutes before full-time, with Andreas Brehme coolly slotting home from the penalty spot.

Argentina finished the game with nine men after Pedro Monzon and Gustavo Dezotti both saw red in the second half. The highlights, such as they are, can be seen on the BBC Sport website.

At 15:00, we asked you for your thoughts on our BBC pundits' team of the World Cup:

Manuel Neuer (Germany), Philipp Lahm (Germany), Giancarlo Gonzalez (Costa Rica), Mats Hummels (Germany), Daley Blind (Netherlands), Javier Mascherano (Argentina), Toni Kroos (Germany), Arjen Robben (Netherlands), Lionel Messi (Argentina), James Rodriguez (Colombia), Thomas Muller (Germany).

Davey R:, external I've got Vlaar for Gonzalez and Pogba for Messi (surely in your team on reputation alone). Other than that, the same.

Anthony Babs T Fash:, external I would have Vlaar instead of Gonzalez.

    Guy Mowbray
BBC commentator in Rio de Janeiro

BBC TV commentator Guy Mowbray took some time out of his preparations for the World Cup final yesterday to answer a few of your questions, as submitted via our Facebook page.

Pratik Mehta: Do Argentina deserve to be in the final? Their performances have been below par. Germany, on the other hand, have been tremendous and a joy to watch.

Guy Mowbray: Yes. They remain the only team not to have been behind at any stage in a game at this World Cup. To say they are a one-man team may have some truth behind it, but that would underestimate the contributions of Mascherano and other key players.

In the build-up to the final, Google have revealed that the most searched for players taking part in the final in the UK are Lionel Messi for Argentina and Sami Khedira from Germany.

In Germany, the most searched for home player is Manuel Neuer, while in Brazil the players attracting most search attention are Messi and Lukas Podolski. Amazingly, in Argentina, the most searched for player is not their number 10, but Javier Mascherano.

Tonight will be the third time Argentina have met a German side in the World Cup final. Led by Diego Maradona, they beat West Germany 3-2 in Mexico in 1986.

The South Americans went 2-0 up with goals from Jose Luis Brown and Jorge Valdano, before strikes from Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and Rudi Voller levelled the game.

But an 84th-minute winner from Jorge Burruchaga was enough to hand Argentina their second World Cup. You can watch highlights from the final on the BBC Sport website.
