  2. Post update

He was an animal tonight, Diego Costa. A wounded animal? I don't think so.

  3. Costa injury free?

    Sporting 0-1 Chelsea

    Robbie Savage

    BBC Radio 5 live

    Diego Costa

"If you've got a hamstring problem - surely you can't perform the way Diego Costa did tonight.

"You can't even get up to full tilt in a game if you're thinking about an injury like that.

"I watched him tonight and he didn't appear to show any signs of struggling."

  4. Chelsea team all smiles

    Chelsea celebrate Sporting win

Chelsea midfielder Felipe Luis has tweeted this picture from the Chelsea dressing room: Sporting 0-1 @chelseafc First victory on the @ChampionsLeague Great game! Go Blues! #CFC

  5. Man City reaction

    Man City 1-1 Roma

    Robbie Savage

    BBC Radio 5 live

"You need energy and guile and so much more in that midfield area to compete in Europe.

"City don't have that at the moment and I'm not sure where they go.

"Totti at 38 is able to sprint 20 yards through the centre of City's team and pull off a superb finish - it's quite worrying."

Tim Arstall: It won't steal many headlines tonight but massive away win from Birmingham and great performance from 18 year old Kobe Arthur

Andrew Hutchinson: shocking referee at Derby tonight, disallowed a Rams goal to award a free kick and send their GK off?! Hadn't got a clue. #dcfc

  7. Football League latest

Norwich stay top of the Championship despite a surprise 1-0 home defeat to Charlton, which even the Addicks' own official twitter account admitted was 'daylight robbery.'

Nottingham Forest were frustrated by Wigan in a 0-0 draw and Watford won 2-1 at home to Brentford. Norwich, Forest and Watford are all now on 20 points.

That means that Wolves can go top tomorrow night if they beat Huddersfield.

  8. Player reaction

    Sporting 0-1 Chelsea

Chelsea captain John Terry: "We had so many chances to kill it off, but it was one of those nights when it wouldn't go in and thankfully Nemanja Matic scored.

"We lost our first group game last year and went on to win the group. We had that in mind and knew we needed to win - we've put ourselves top of the group and in control again."

On his 100th Champions League game: "I'm very proud - not many players have achieved that. I've had a great and successful career and long may it continue. I'm feeling great at the moment."

  9. Have your say

    Man City 1-1 Roma

With Manchester City still without a Champions League win this season, will they qualify for the next round?

Here's what some of you are saying on the BBC Sport Facebook page:

Michael Barnsfield: Roma dominated large parts of that game and should have won! FORZA ROMA

Chukwu R Bukas: So hard to say. I wonder what Mangala was doing on the bench.

  10. The lie of the land

    Man City 1-1 Roma

In Group E Bayern Munich are sitting pretty on six points from two games.

Roma are next up on four, with City on one and CSKA Moscow pointless after two defeats. They are City's next opponents next month and only a win will do.

  11. Chelsea reaction

    Sporting 0-1 Chelsea

    Kevin Kilbane

    BBC Radio 5 live

"Chelsea have got as good a defence as anyone in the Champions League.

"They should have won by four or five goals really.

"But, overall Chelsea were comfortable at the back and that's the positive Mourinho will take from the game."

  12. The lie of the land

    Sporting 0-1 Chelsea

In Group G, Chelsea are top on four points after two games, with Maribor and Schalke on two apiece, and Sporting bottom on one.

Next up for Jose Mourinho's men is a visit from Maribor on Tuesday 21 October.

  13. Text us on 81111

Tom, Manchester: City desperately missing Fernando, specifically bought for nights like these. Thought City played alright today, Yaya woke up in the second half. Clichy was very poor. Still believe we can get out of this group

  14. Man City reaction

    Man City 1-1 Roma

    Kevin Kilbane

    BBC Radio 5 live

    "City are under big pressure.

"When you play open, expansive football, you need quick players. That's where ideally you'd play Mangala to get you out of trouble."

  15. Man City reaction

    Man City 1-1 Roma

    Robbie Savage

    BBC Radio 5 live

"City in Europe just don't seem to click, I don't know why.

"Tonight just goes to show that defensively, they're not strong enough. I'm surprised Manuel Pellegrini left Eliaquim Mangala out tonight."

  16. Player reaction

    Man City 1-1 Roma

Manchester City midfielder James Milner: "We didn't play at our best but we had a fair few chances and could have nicked it. We never played at our tempo which teams find hard to deal with.

"They are well organised and we didn't do enough."

  17. Jump and prance...

    Man City 1-1 Roma

    Totti

Francesco Totti scored a great goal tonight - he made his Roma debut in the 2-0 away victory against Brescia on 28 March 1993.

That was so long ago that Shaggy was at number one with 'Oh Carolina.' Ridiculous.

Stephen, Kircubbin: Roma impressive, City not. So disappointed. Going backwards in Europe. Milner and Lampard deserve starts.

  19. Championship latest

Action shot from Watford v Brentford

BBC Sport's Chris Osborne at Watford 2-1 Brentford: "Billy McKinlay starts his managerial career with a victory as Watford cling on to beat Brentford.

"Matej Vydra's corker of a half-volley proved to be the winner - but they needed a sharp save by Heurelho Gomes at the death to deny Jake Bidwell heading in an equaliser."

  20. Text us on 81111

Chris, London: It's become fashionable to rag on Yaya Toure. He was one of City's best players in their last two games, but he gets all the criticism. Why not Silva or anyone else?

  21. Player reaction

    Sporting 0-1 Chelsea

Chelsea captain John Terry talking to Sky Sports: "Sporting are a good side and it was a big night for them.

"We had so many chances to kill it off, but it was just one of those nights where it didn't quite go in for us.

"We had to come here and win tonight and we got it. It puts us top of the group and in control again."

  22. Player reaction

    Man City 1-1 Roma

    Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole

Roma defender Ashley Cole: "It was a good performance after going 1-0 down so early in the game. We had belief that we could get a result. Maybe we should have won? I don't know.

"We defended well. It's still early, we came here to win and are a bit disappointed but it's a good point for us."

  23. Text us on 81111

Dan, North London: Unbelievable performance from Matic. Lost count of how often he won possession and launched Chelsea forward, plus has the eye for a through ball. Not many like him around at the moment.

  24. Post update

    Sporting 0-1 Chelsea

Sporting goalkeeper Rui Patricio made six saves tonight, he kept his side in it for long periods. But Chelsea should have been home and hosed.

  25. Join the debate at #bbcfootball

David Morris: Very good first half performance, not as good in the second. Matic was magnificent, as was Willian when he came on.

Binaya Basyal: And how many clear one-on-ones did @chelseafc miss? Oh, I lost the count of them.

Kuntal Majumdar: Mourinho walking all the way and congratulating Patricio is all about respect. That's why I love football.

  26. Post update

  30. FULL-TIME

    PSG 3-2 Barcelona

All over and Barcelona have been beaten for the first time this season, and it is a deserved victory for Paris St-Germain.

  34. GREAT SAVE!

    Sporting 0-1 Chelsea

Rui Patricio has earned a Superbock or two tonight, the Sporting captain making yet another stop to keep out Mo Salah's low shot. How is this 1-0?!

  35. Elsewhere in Europe

    Klaas-Jan Huntelaar

Into the last few minutes in tonight's Champions League games and it looks like Klaas-Jan Huntelaar's strike could rescue a draw for Schalke at home to Maribor, with that game 1-1.

Bate are still beating Athletic Bilbao 2-1 while the game between Apoel and Ajax is 1-1 and Shakthar are beating Porto 2-1.

  38. Sporting 0-1 Chelsea

    Kevin Kilbane

    BBC Radio 5 live

"The last few minutes there have been signs that Sporting could get back in this game.

"Montero flashed that header just wide and Chelsea will only have themselves to blame if they concede."

  39. CLOSE!

    Sporting 0-1 Chelsea

A few Chelsea hearts in mouths as substitute Fredy Montero heads wide at the near post, the closest Sporting have come for a time. Into added time in Lisbon.

  40. Post update

    Football League

Into the closing stages of games in the Championship and leaders Norwich are still being held 0-0 at home by Charlton as are nearest rivals Nottingham Forest at Wigan. Billy McKinlay is minutes away from marking his first game in charge of Watford with victory, Matej Vydra making it 2-1 against Brentford. And Derby, who started the day sixth in the table, have taken a late lead at home to Bournemouth through Will Hughes.

  42. Post update

    Man City 1-1 Roma

Gael Clichy wins a corner for Manchester City as they enter the last four minutes - there will be time added on though as Maicon is down injured.

  43. Sporting 0-1 Chelsea

    Kevin Kilbane

    BBC Radio 5 live

    Jose Mourinho

"Considering the talent Chelsea have in that final third, they should really be four or five up in this game.

"Costa missed a great chance early on, Oscar was denied in a one-on-one and Schurrle had several shots in the first half."

  44. CLOSE!

    Sporting 0-1 Chelsea

Yet another good move for Chelsea, yet another near miss! Luis Filipe is on the end of Willian's pass but drags a cross across the goalmouth and Cesc Fabregas and Diego Costa both just miss out.

At the other end Nani shoots over the top.

  45. SUBSTITUTION

    Man City 1-1 Roma

A strange one if you want a goal - Sergio Aguero is replaced by the fit-again Stevan Jovetic. Frank Lampard pumps a shot just wide after another marvellous pass from David Silva.

City well on top now but they have just six minutes to find a goal.

  46. Text us on 81111

  50. Post update

    Man City 1-1 Roma

BBC Sport chief football writer Phil McNulty at Etihad Stadium

"Entering the crucial last 10 minutes and Roma have a decision to make - do they continue to go for it or do they contain and try to keep a result that is far better for them than it is for Manchester City?

"The tension has been illustrated by a spectacular on-the-spot dance by Roma coach Rudi Garcia when they conceded possession in a dangerous area."

  51. Post update

    Sporting 0-1 Chelsea

    Nani and Branislav Ivanovic

We are into the last 10 minutes. Hold on to your hats (or opposing full-backs).

  52. Sporting 0-1 Chelsea

    Alan Green

    BBC Radio 5 live

"Chelsea are just retreating a little bit now, maybe they feel they can get away with a one-goal lead."

  53. CLOSE!

    Sporting 0-1 Chelsea

Diego Costa is in again! Great pace and power from the big man to stream through on his own but his shot lashes into the side-netting at the near post. I can't believe it's only 1-0.

  54. Post update

    Man City 1-1 Roma

Manuel Pellegrini to bring in Beyonce to his backroom staff? That is a story.

  55. Text us on 81111

Tom Rose, Stirling: It seems to me that there is a mental issue surrounding Man City and the Champions League. On paper, they have a squad more than capable of winning this group. However, it seems that some of the players and managerial staff have got the oh so familiar European stage fright. Maybe they could learn a thing or two from Beyoncé in that department.

  56. Post update

    Man City 1-1 Roma

    He won't Chris - he really won't.

But that is brilliant from David Silva, fine ball out to the left to find Gael Clichy, he flings it in to the middle but Frank Lampard can't steer home under pressure.

That's brilliant from Maicon, what a delivery on the run to arc in a cross right into the mixer, it's asking for a tap-in but Pablo Zabaleta scrambles it away. Fine play from both right-backs there.

    City have 17 minutes left.

  60. NEW RECORD

    PSG 3-2 Barcelona

    Barcelona

Xavi Hernandez, 34, comes on for Barcelona for the last 20 minutes and in doing makes his record-breaking 143rd appearance in the Champions League - more than other player.

  61. Post update

    Man City 1-1 Roma

Into the last 20 minutes and Yaya Toure is again all over the place, giving the ball away and almost seeing Roma counter to good effect. He's so languid.

  62. SUBSTITUTION

    Sporting 0-1 Chelsea

How is this only 1-0? Another close call for Chelsea as substitute Willian's low ball in is deflected just past the near post. Jose Mourinho then sends on John Mikel Obi for Oscar in a bid to close this one up.

"If Diego Costa has a hamstring problem, I would love to see him when he's 100% fit.

"He's just got an incredible turn of pace."

  65. GREAT SAVE!

    Man City 1-1 Roma

Frank Lampard has been banging them in since joining City and he now takes aim from 20 yards, hitting a dipping strike that is deflected away for a corner.

Manchester City midfielder Frank Lampard against Roma
  66. Post update

    Man City 1-1 Roma

Manchester City are now looking more stable since they went to a five-man midfield, and James Milner has threatened to find a way in on a few occasions. But Roma still look composed on the ball and work a way through to Miralem Pjanic, whose composure escapes him as he lashes over the top.

  71. Post update

We are into the last half-hour in tonight's games. Manchester City have not played well and would probably settle for a point now, whereas Chelsea should be home and hosed.

  72. YELLOW CARD

    Sporting 0-1 Chelsea

    Players argue

Wall-to-wall filth in Lisbon! Diego Costa is the latest man to sprint away and would be clean through had Mauricio not bodychecked him. That would be frowned upon in the NFL, never mind the UCL. Ouch.

Mauricio is booked and has also bust his nose open on Costa's chest.

The most professional of fouls as Branislav Ivanovic shuts the door in Andre Carrillo's face like a door-to-door salesman, bam! Carrillo's turn of pace was astounding, he ghosted past two men and would have been in on goal had the right-back not intervened.

  78. CLOSE!

And now a chance at the other end! Nani gets on the end of a flowing move but drags his shot horrible into the side-netting. Considering Chelsea should be about 6-0 up they could well throw this lead away if they are not careful.

  79. GOAL

Barcelona striker Neymar celebrates his goal against PSG
  80. Post update

    Man City 1-1 Roma

BBC Sport chief football writer Phil McNulty at Etihad Stadium

"First signs of impatience from Manchester City's fans as their team continues to be second best. They still seem to be struggling for self-belief in the Champions League and need to catch a break here."

  81. GREAT SAVE!

    Sporting 0-1 Chelsea

    Got to be! No!

I've not seen so many one-on-ones in a game since Ian Rush was playing. Sporting Lisbon's offside trap is an absolute travesty as Oscar again has 45 yards of grass to run into. Again he takes too long and should score, but his effort is kicked clear by Rui Patricio. Massive chance.

  82. GOAL

PSG 3-1 Barcelona - Blaise Matuidi (54 mins)

Half-time at the Parc des Princes and Paris St-Germain head down the tunnel with their noses in front after Marco Verratti's header. The pace of the game settled down considerably after that goal, with neither side managing another shot on target before the break.

It seems Patrick Kluivert was only having a quick catch-up with David Beckham earlier as the former England midfielder is sat next to singers Jay-Z and Beyonce. As you do.

Leaders Norwich start with a one-point cushion at the summit against Charlton, while second-placed Nottingham Forest will be looking to stretch their unbeaten league start to the campaign to 10 games away to Wigan.

Elsewhere, Mick McCarthy's in-form Ipswich hope to make it five Championship wins in a row when they face Sheffield Wednesday away.

    Sporting v Chelsea (19:45 BST)

Chelsea - who seem to have pretty much a settled XI these days - make just two changes from the 3-0 win over Aston Villa. Filipe Luis is in at left-back while Andre Schurrle replaces Willian.

Chelsea XI: Courtois; Ivanovic, Cahill, Terry, Filipe Luis; Matic, Fabregas; Schurrle, Oscar, Hazard; Diego Costa

  197. Opening night

Man City v Roma (19:45 BST)

    Gervinho

Manchester City and Roma come into tonight's showdown in very different moods.

City played reasonably well in their opener away at Bayern Munich but a late winner from their former defender Jerome Boateng rather took the jam from their doughnut. Not a disaster by any means but a defeat all the same.

On the other hand Roma, on their return to the Champions League, thrashed CSKA Moscow 5-1, with former Arsenal misfit Gervinho scoring twice.

It could well be a case of one of these sides joining Bayern Munich in the last 16. City need a win tonight...

  198. Under way in Moscow

    CSKA Moscow 0-1 Bayern Munich

    Bayern Munich

Champions League football is already up and running in the East, with Bayern Munich facing CSKA Moscow in Manchester City's group.

The match is being played behind closed doors at the Khimki Arena after the Russian champions were punished by governing body Uefa for racist chanting by their fans last season.

It is currently 1-0 to Bayern with 10 minutes left - that man Thomas Muller on the spot from the spot.

  199. Elsewhere in Europe

    Barcelona

Barcelona have not conceded a goal in 630 minutes of football this season - not a stat that will be welcome reading for a Paris St-Germain side facing the Spanish giants without Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

The Swedish striker is out with a heel injury, but PSG will take comfort from the fact they are tough to beat on home soil, having not lost at Parc des Princes in their last 29 matches.

Barcelona are currently top of Group F with three points, with PSG on one, the same as Ajax, who travel to Cyprus for their game against Apoel tonight.

Elsewhere, Schalke host Maribor in Group G while Porto travel to Shakhtar Donetsk and BATE host Athletic Bilbao in Group H.

  200. Mr. Nani

    Sporting v Chelsea (19:45 BST)

    Nani

Across Europe on the Iberian peninsula - also conquered by the Romans in days gone by - Chelsea look to continue their own European history with a win against Sporting Lisbon.

Chelsea were surprisingly held to a 1-1 draw by Schalke in the first game in Group G, while Lisbon also drew in Maribor.

Their goalscorer that night? None other than former Manchester United man Nani. A repeat this evening?

  201. Team News

Man City v Roma (19:45 BST)

Manchester City make three changes from the side which won at Hull at the weekend. Joe Hart is back in goal, Jesus Navas is in on the wing and Martin Demichelis replaces Eli Mangala at the back.

Man City: Hart, Zabaleta, Kompany, Demichelis, Clichy, Navas, Fernandinho, Yaya Toure, Silva, Aguero, Dzeko

  202. The Roman invasion

Man City v Roma (19:45 BST)

    Roman soldiers

A lot of sides like to crow about their 'proud history in Europe.' But beat this.

A shade under 2,000 years ago the Romans picked up a big away win under renowned tactician Claudius.

The visitors, with midfield general Aulus Plautius having a stormer, swept across the Channel before landing in three sites in Kent in the year 43.

The English defence struggled to adapt to the continental system of three (armies) up front, and despite some dogged defending it was a fine 50 years or so for the Roman attack until they hit a brick wall just outside Scotland.

    Roma in training

A lot of water has passed under the bridge of course but let's not let that get in the way of a tenuous intro. The Romans are back on English turf tonight, and will be in the mood to conquer once more.

Can Manchester City stand up to the hordes? Will they beat back the advance of Emperor Garcia and co?

    Let's find out...
