Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger, speaking to Sky Sports: "We are a very attack-minded team tonight but everyone needs to put that more in defensively to balance it out."

On Jack Wilshere, who starts on the bench: "He is fit to play a part. He is nearly there."

Mario Balotelli again leads the line for Liverpool tonight, sporting a slightly ginger hue to his Mohican. Can he catch fire tonight?

Kurt Pollitt:, external Early games that aren't crucial are not the big pull of the important ones, hence a 10,000 below full crowd at Etihad last night

"Midfield is an area that Arsenal will strengthen. Seydou Keita was superb in there for Roma against Manchester City but everyone in Europe needs a player like that.

"Mathieu Flamini came in at Tottenham this time last season with a clenched fist, sorting players out and I hope he doesn't lose that.

"He needs to forget the mistakes that have been made and the manager will trust in him. Arsene Wenger is changing the system a little bit, playing with a deep lying midfield and it's more distance for him to cover."

Gregory Bortkiewicz:, external Group games throw up exciting matches and surprise results; knock-out games are often more defensive affairs.

Calmelo:, external Uefa should bring back the two group stage format.

Charlie:, external Every stage of Champions League can have good & bad games. New teams that can surprise. I guess you have to love it.

"In 2004 that Arsenal team won the league but it should have achieved so much more. In the Champions League it takes time as Man City are seeing. It's another step up and you have to come alive and find another gear.

"It was a real shock for us initially when we first played in the Champions League. A lot of the players were 29 or 30 and Arsene Wenger was holding our hand on that journey.

"Arsene was talking about an exclusive club and if Arsenal can get into a semi-final that is success. The dominance in Europe has moved away from Arsenal. I feel this year will come too soon for Arsenal developing this team."

Last year's finalists Atletico Madrid host a Juventus side who have been in dominant form so far this season.

The Serie A champions have won all six games they have played, scoring 12 goals and conceding none in the process. Atletico are also unbeaten in the Spanish league, but their only defeat of the season was in the Champions League - a 3-2 loss at Olympiakos last month. Olympiakos will look to build on that win at Swedish side Malmo, who lost to Juventus in their group opener.

Meanwhile, Jurgen Klopp takes his Borussia Dortmund side to Belgium where they face Anderlecht and win would put the Germans in control of Group D after they beat Arsenal 2-0 last month. Fellow Germans Bayer Leverkusen are at home to Benfica, with both sides looking to record their first win in Group C.

Arsene Wenger has set his sights on double figures as he attempts to lead his side into the knockout stages of the Champions League for yet another season.

Galatasaray may have lost Didier Drogba back to his beloved Chelsea but they still have Wesley Sneijder pulling the strings.

"We are maybe more under pressure to win than if we had won the first game," Wenger explained.

"In the group stage you need a minimum of 10 points so the home games are vital.

"Basically the target [to get out of your group] is always the same in the Champions League - you need to win your home games and you need one good result away from home."

So no room for error tonight...

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers: "This is a stadium that is a difficult place to come and play and they will be a big rival for us in the group.

"We played well at the weekend and I have seen signs that we are getting back to our level."

As well as the creme de la creme from across Europe we have our meat and two veg of the Championship to savour tonight too.

Leeds host Reading, Wolves can go top with a win at home to Huddersfield, and managerless Fulham take on Bolton and their under-fire boss Dougie Freedman.

Liverpool may have their eyes on a valuable away win but they would do well not to take their Swiss opponents lightly.

Basel defeated Chelsea both home and away in the 2013-14 Champions League group stages, with Chelsea responding by signing their best player, Mohamed Salah. Ouch.

Liverpool played Basel in the 2002-03 Champions League: they played out two score draws (1-1 and 3-3).

Alexis Sanchez returns to the Arsenal first XI in one of three changes by Arsene Wenger. Sanchez was named on the bench against Tottenham at the weekend but comes into the side, along with Mathieu Flamini and Santi Cazorla.

Jack Wilshere, who took a knock to his ankle against Spurs, is on the bench, while Aaron Ramsey and Mikel Arteta miss out as expected after picking up injuries at the weekend.

Arsenal XI: Szczesny, Chambers, Mertesacker, Koscielny, Gibbs, Flamini, Cazorla, Ozil, Sanchez, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Welbeck.

Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, Arsenal, Liverpool, Atletico Madrid, Juventus - some of the continent's biggest names are in action this evening.

But - aside from the clash between Atletico and Juve in Madrid - none of the big boys are up against each other, and tonight's fixtures look, dare I say it, a bit flat. Manchester City couldn't sell out last night.

Are the early stages of the Champions League actually a touch on the dull side for most football fans? Will you be missing out this evening, tuning in again after Christmas when the good stuff really gets going?

Or is that all nonsense - the Champions League is where it's at, the pinnacle of club football, better than the World Cup, The Sopranos, The West Wing and Breaking Bad?

It's about time Arsenal reached another European final. Is this their year?

Liverpool make two changes from the side that started Saturday's 1-1 draw with neighbours Everton.

Adam Lallana drops to the bench to be replaced by Philippe Coutinho while Jose Enrique, who made his first start in 10 months when the Reds beat Middlesbrough in the League Cup, is in at left-back in place of Alberto Moreno.

Liverpool starting XI: Mignolet; Manquillo, Lovren, Skrtel, Enrique; Gerrard, Henderson, Coutinho, Sterling; Markovic, Balotelli.
