Right, that's a wrap for the evening here. Join us tomorrow night for more Champions League gold. Over and out.

  2. Post update

    Arsenal 3-3 Anderlecht

Arsenal's result tonight was the first time in 102 games that an English side has failed to win when three goals up. Stat-tastic.

  3. Manager reaction

    Arsenal 3-3 Anderlecht

    Arsene Wenger looks on dejected

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger talking to Sky Sports: "I was never completely sure that we were not in danger because all game you could see we didn't defend well.

"It's hugely disappointing. We have to win our next game and see if we have a chance of winning the group.

"I'm confident because one point should be enough but it's not done. Everybody is really down tonight."

  4. Text us on 81111

Nick in London: The Arsenal players need to come forward and take responsibility for this evening. I see no reason in blaming Wenger. The short answer is the players threw the game away.

Graham Jack Thirkill: Arsenal will win at the weekend and all the fans will be calling Wenger a legend again

  6. Manager reaction

    Arsenal 3-3 Anderlecht

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger: "We had some bad luck, the first goal was offside but we had a lack of concentration and thought the game was won.

"Overall we were poor defensively from the first to the last minute. At 3-2 you have to secure yourself and we were not cautious enough. It was very poor defending.

"Am I angry or disappointed? Both."

  7. Post update

    Real Madrid 1-0 Liverpool

Brendan Rodgers reveals that Liverpool are staying over in Madrid tonight. To Gran Via!

  8. Post update

    Real Madrid 1-0 Liverpool

    Steven Gerrard

More from Henry Winter on Liverpool's team against Real Madrid: "Steven Gerrard will probably never get the chance to come to the Bernabeu again and he was sat on the bench for most of tonight.

"We can spin it either way and say that Kolo Toure and Alberto Moreno played well, but Liverpool leave here tonight having slipped another place down the table and they have got to win their next two games.

"This was not the Liverpool way tonight."

  9. Text us on 81111

Rich in Hitchin: Arsenal have no spine, no guts and no brain. Wenger is out of touch and out of ideas. Has been for a long time. Not been good since Henry and Vieira left.

  10. Manager reaction

    Real Madrid 1-0 Liverpool

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers: "I've got to manage a squad which has seven games in 21 days. I didn't rest players for next Saturday, it was a team who I thought could get a result, and we were unfortunate not to get a result. Against the best team in the world.

"It's easy to say that we may have done better with a different team but listen, we could have lost 5-0."

  11. Post update

    Real Madrid 1-0 Liverpool

    BBC Radio 5 live

The Daily Telegraph's football correspondent Henry Winter has been reacting to Liverpool's team selection.

Was Brendan Rodgers vindicated by that selection tonight?

"You can't say that yet, it will all depend what happens against Chelsea on Saturday.

"Where we are at the moment is it's Tuesday night and Chelsea haven't even played yet."

  12. Post update

    Arsenal 3-3 Anderlecht

Manchester United may have problems at centre-back, but what about Arsenal? United have an injury crisis there, Arsenal just don't have any.

Nacho Monreal does not look like a central defender at all.

Harry Partridge: Disappointing result, but not only can Arsenal still easily qualify, but topping the group isn't inconceivable!

David Thomas: Wenger didn't replace Vermaelen. Monreal not a centre back. Facts.

On the BBC Sport Facebook page we're asking you, were Liverpool right to rest Gerrard and co v Real Madrid?

    Here's what you're saying:

Lee Warmington: Best performance so far all season......against the mighty Real Madrid.....same set up against Chelsea I say and we could walk away with at least a point

Liam Meredith: Liverpool played well???? Casillas had one very easy save to make, it was a case of Madrid team not turning up but they still done the job

Grant Lawson: Think that is a question for the 4,000 plus Liverpool fans to answer many who took time off work and paid for flights and hotels and will have spend a fair few quid

  16. Post update

    Real Madrid players celebrate

Real Madrid have won 10 successive Champions League home games; their longest run since December 1998.

Can they become the first team to retain the European Cup since AC Milan in 1990?

In the 20:00 GMT kick-offs in the Championship, two second-half goals from Simon Cox saw Reading run out 3-0 winners at home to Rotherham, who have conceded six goals in their last two games. It was the same scoreline at the Macron Stadium, where Bolton showed their progress under manager Neil Lennon with a 3-0 win at home to Russell Slade's Cardiff.

In League One, Swindon were the winners against Preston, who continue to falter at the top of the table. Second-placed North End have lost more ground on Bristol City after back-to-back defeats.

    Real Madrid 1-0 Liverpool

    Brendan Rodgers

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers: "You asked me at the beginning if the team was strong enough but you saw how good they were. To come here, where they win in threes and fours, to keep the game as close as it was showed the quality of our performance. We had the courage to play and I'm very proud of the team tonight. We showed wonderful composure.

"I knew what I was doing. I knew what the team would be tonight. We are disappointed with the result but there are many positives tonight. Some of the young players did very well.

"There's every chance of us qualifying still. We always thought it would come down to the last game and it is in our hands."

  22. Post update

    Real Madrid 1-0 Liverpool

    Pat Nevin

BBC Radio 5 live at the Bernabeu

"Chelsea haven't played yet, they're away from home tomorrow night. They will want to play a strong team as well on Saturday in the Premier League.

"But, Brendan Rodgers will go away from here tonight thinking can he really leave a few of those players out after the performances they put in?

"The real disappointment tonight was Raheem Sterling when he came on."

  23. Player reaction

"Players like Emre Can really grew in to the occasion."

  26. Player reaction

Adam Lallana advances with the ball

More from Adam Lallana speaking to ITV: "We've got quite a big squad and we were out there tonight to prove a point and I think we stood up.

"The main thing though is the result and we're disappointed, even though we've come to the holders of the competition tonight."

  27. Football league full-times

A 2-1 win for Gary Rowett in his first home game in charge of Birmingham City will do the Championship strugglers a world of good. It was a win against the unlikeliest opponents, as Watford move off the top of the table and lose for the first time under Slavisa Jokanovic.

At the other end Bournemouth move to the top of the Championship table as they win 2-0 at Sheffield Wednesday - it is the first time the Cherries have won six in a row in the second tier in their history.

Ipswich take the spoils at Portman Road in the game that saw Mick McCarthy come up against his former club. Wolves gave the ball away cheaply for both of the home side's goals, which were both clinically put away by Daryl Murphy.

Derby got back on track with a 3-2 win against Huddersfield, while Middlesbrough crushed Norwich 4-0. Neil Redfearn was denied a first win as the permanent boss of Leeds thanks to a late Charlton equaliser, and Millwall rescued themselves after falling 2-0 behind to Blackburn with 10 men. It finished 2-2.

Brighton got their first win in 12 games as they beat Wigan 1-0 thanks to Gary Gardner's goal in the first minute. Relief for Sami Hyypia.

  28. Player reaction

    Real Madrid 1-0 Liverpool

    Adam Lallana

Liverpool midfielder Adam Lallana speaking on ITV: "We said at half time if the game stayed at 1-0, we would have every chance of getting back in to it.

"We showed we have got the fight with that performance and we know we have got to win the last two games to go through, but we're confident we can do that."

  29. Post update

    Real Madrid 1-0 Liverpool

The 4,000 or so fans who have made the trip to Madrid are still in good voice. When the team sheet came out an hour before kick-off they must have feared the worst, but Liverpool put in a good showing.

However, they never really looked like scoring all night. They didn't hurt Madrid in the slightest.

  30. Text us on 81111

James in London: To all those who will say we should have played the 1st team seen as our fringe players only lost 1-0. The "1st team" so called did play Madrid at Anfield...and got walked over 3-0. Lucas impressed, and maybe it is time to drop Mario for Borini. At least he moves

  31. Post update

    Real Madrid 1-0 Liverpool

If Liverpool win their final two games, they are through. They have to play Ludogorets away and Basel at home.

  32. Elsewhere in Europe...

Swiss side Basel move ahead of Liverpool in Group B after a comfortable 4-0 win over Bulgarian outfit Ludogorets Razgrad at St Jakob Park. Borussia Dortmund secured their passage to the last-16 with a routine 4-1 home win over Galatasaray.

Spanish champions Atletico Madrid climbed to the top of Group A following their 2-0 win over Malmo thanks to goals from Koke and Raul Garcia. Juventus earned a valuable 3-2 win over Olympiakos in Turin, although they remain behind the Greek side in third place on goal difference.

In Group C Benfica boosted their hopes of progressing to the knockout phase with a 1-0 win over Monaco with Bayer Leverkusen increasing their advantage at the top of the pool following a 2-1 away win over second-placed Zenit St Petersburg.

  38. Football league update

Birmingham City could be putting a surprise end to Watford's unbeaten run at the top of the table. David Cotterill heads home from inside the six-yard box to give Gary Rowett's side the lead in front of more than 18,000 at St Andrews on his first night as manager at the ground.

Charlton have snatched another equaliser at Leeds, again through Johann Berg Gudmundsson. Will it be more frustration in the permanent hot seat for Neil Redfearn?

On a night of remarkable turnarounds, 10-man Millwall have also equalised at home to Blackburn to the of delight of the Den.

There is a fourth for Middlesbrough at home to hapless Norwich through Yanic Wildschut, and Bolton have a third against Cardiff.

There is a goal in tonight's only game in League One. Andy Williams gives Swindon the lead at home to Preston, with just six minutes remaining.

But as it stands, Bournemouth are heading to the top of the Championship table. Can Premier League supporters start to dream of that August bank holiday away-day on the South Coast?

  48. YELLOW CARD

    Real Madrid 1-0 Liverpool

All kinds of pace from Gareth Bale! Such an exciting sight as he eats up the yards, he bursts through and Alberto Moreno does what he has to, slides in and chops him down right on the edge of the box.

Bale takes the free-kick, gets it over the wall but again Simon Mignolet punches it away.

  49. Football league update

Middlesbrough are coasting now to a comprehensive win against Norwich. Grant Leadbitter gets his second and the home side's third goal of the night to make it 3-0.

It is not so comfortable for Blackburn, who have been pegged back to 2-1 by 10-man Millwall.

Reading have moved three clear at home to Rotherham, Simon Cox getting two goals in the second half.

It looks more difficult for Huddersfield now, as Derby's Simon Dawkins' shot from outside the area creeps in off the post. 3-1 to the home side.

But the night could belong to Bournemouth. The Cherries are heading for a fantastic away win at Sheffield Wednesday, Ryan Fraser's goal giving them a two-goal advantage against a Wednesday side who earlier had Royston Drenthe dismissed.

Why he is a class below Aguero and Hazard.

  62. DISALLOWED GOAL

    Real Madrid 1-0 Liverpool

Fabio Borini can tell his kids that he scored at the Bernabeu - well sort of. He fouls Sergio Ramos, but plays on after the whistle to slot under the body of Iker Casillas.

Liverpool have 15 minutes to go.

  63. Football league update

    Football

It is getting interesting at Leeds as Neil Redfearn searches for his first win as the team's permanent boss. Two goals from Alex Mowatt either side of a Charlton equaliser from Johann Berg Gudmundsson give the home side a 2-1 lead.

Wolves equalised at Ipswich through James Henry's cross that missed everyone, fizzed off the sodden November turf and crept into the corner. But Ipswich have restored their lead thanks to a deft chip from Daryl Murphy, who doubles his tally. 2-1 to Mick McCarthy's side.

Andy Wilkinson has made Millwall's night against Blackburn significantly more difficult, as he receives his fifth career red card for a ferocious tackle that had the referee going straight to his back pocket. There was also a nasty fracas between the two dugouts following the challenge. Just two minutes later, Rudy Gestede doubles the away team's lead. 2-0 to Rovers.

It does not take Bournemouth long to take advantage of Royston Drenthe's red card for Sheffield Wednesday. The Cherries are one up within two minutes of the red card, Andrew Surman keeping his cool. Could Bournemouth be heading for an unprecedented sixth straight league win as a second-tier club? They are going top of the table at present.

  64. Elsewhere in Europe....

That Ludogorets Razgrad comeback against Basel that Liverpool fans were hoping for? Well, it's going to take something truly special now after Shkelzen Gashi and Marek Suchy make it it 4-0 to the Swiss side at St Jakob Park.

Borussia Dortmund look to be cruising into the last 16 of the competition after taking a 2-0 lead against Galatasaray. The Turkish club failed to clear a corner and Sebastian Kehl headed the ball into the box for Greek centre-back Sokratis Papastathopoulos to hook the ball home.

Juventus fell behind to Olympiakos after Delvin N'Dinga scored for the Greeks. But the Italian champions stepped it up and now lead 3-2 after Fernando Llorente's header hit the bar and bounced in off Olympiakos goalkeeper Roberto before Paul Pogba fired home minutes later.

  65. GOAL

Arsenal 3-2 Anderlecht - Anthony Vanden Borre (Pen 73 mins)

  72. CLOSE!

    Real Madrid 1-0 Liverpool

Positive signs from Liverpool winger Lazar Markovic, who has twice gone on powerful runs through the middle. He can carry the ball, that's for sure.

But Real should be 2-0 up! It's a great block from Kolo Toure, preventing Cristiano Ronaldo from finding the net. But Ronaldo took an extra touch, he could have hit it first time but opened up the angle.

    Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain celebrates scoring

A goal his performance has thoroughly merited! Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain puts qualification beyond any doubt with a fine third. Credit again to Alexis Sanchez, who wins the ball back in the final third with a sliding tackle, Oxlade-Chamberlain picks up the pieces, powers past the last man and buries the low shot across the keeper. Fine goal.

  82. CLOSE!

  99. Football league update

There have been goals aplenty in the first half in the Championship, with the pick of the games at Pride Park where in-form Huddersfield are taking on Derby, who are looking to get back on track after losing their last two. Johnny Russell has given Derby the lead for the second time in the game on the stroke of half-time, but it could still go either way at 2-1 to the home side.

Andrew Shinnie has missed a sitter for a much-improved Birmingham against table-toppers Watford. The Blues took the lead in Gary Rowett's first home match in charge, before Fernando Forestieri's equaliser to make it 1-1, but Shinnie had a gilt-edged chance with a header from inside the box to restore Blues' lead.

Middlesbrough are in control at 2-0 up at home to Norwich, Ipswich have a 1-0 lead at home to Wolves and Brighton, without a win in 11, lead 1-0 at home to Wigan.

In the 20:00 GMT kick-offs, Jamie Mackie has put Reading one-up against Rotherham and a double from Liam Feeney has put Bolton well on the way to moving out of the drop zone. They lead 2-0 at home to Cardiff.

Middlesbrough have extended their lead to 2-0 against Norwich through a Grant Leadbitter penalty, although it took referee Nigel Miller a short while to award the spot kick after Russell Martin's lunge in the area.

Mick McCarthy's Ipswich have the advantage on a special night for the former Wolves boss at Portman Road. Wolves defenders dallied on the ball at the back, it was pinched by the Ipswich forwards, then curled in terrifically by Daryl Murphy to make it 1-0.

    Kolo Toure warms up

Paul in Woodford Green: Rodgers has picked the reserves. He's given up without a fight. Disgraceful. Can't imagine Shankly or Paisley would have done that...

Alex in Somerset: The Sunderland players refunded their supporters after the Southampton thrashing... I wonder if Liverpool will be doing the same tonight!

Real Madrid v Liverpool (19:45 GMT)

I seem to remember Gary Megson resting his first team in similar fashion while in charge of Bolton a few years ago.

And Big Sam saw his West Ham team tanked 5-0 by Forest in the FA Cup last year as he left out the big guns.

He was - kind of - proven right as his side climbed away from the relegation zone. The problem is, Liverpool now have to beat Chelsea at the weekend don't they?

What happens if Chelsea win 3-0 at Anfield?

David Robinson: Realistically LFC first team would have struggled to win tonight, why not change it up and rest those players for the weekend?

Father Luke: I like BR. Team choice might even make a bit of sense, but he's going to regret it. Massively. First nail.

Alex Watson: I'm sorry, but Kolo has absolutely no chance tonight. Strange tactics from Rodgers, he has admitted defeat.

  189. Online abuse 'a disgrace'

Yaya Toure speaks to BBC World Service's John Bennett

The Toures are in the news tonight.

Yaya Toure has hit back at those who subjected him to online abuse on social media, calling it "a disgrace".

The Manchester City midfielder told BBC Sport that Fifa should be doing more to tackle the problem.

Police are investigating claims Toure was racially abused on Twitter a few hours after re-activating his account following a five-month absence.

"We need to do something to try to tell people those kinds of behaviour have to stop," Toure said.

"I've been trying to say to Fifa that they are on the wrong way and what they are doing is not good."

    Pat Nevin

BBC Radio 5 live at the Bernabeu

"I think it's a pragmatic approach. Brendan Rodgers is going to try and defend with a second-string side.

"Steven Gerrard hasn't been dropped, he's been rested. Realistically, this isn't a team he's sending out to win.

"Every Liverpool fan must be fearful of what might happen."

The 44-year-old won 53 England caps and is currently goalkeeper and manager of Indian Super League side Kerala Blasters FC. As well as his van you could get hold of 150 signed shirts, shorts and match balls.

Bids for his possessions, which also include exercise and DJ equipment, vinyl records, books and toys, are being accepted from 6 to 18 November.

Shirts including an England home kit signed by the team, and a bright pink Portsmouth goalkeeper's jersey, are expected to sell for upwards of £30-50 each.

    Seven missing for Liverpool

It's not often that team news is genuinely exciting or interesting, so it bears repeating tonight.

In case you missed it, Brendan Rodgers has rested his first team, making seven changes for the trip to Madrid.

Liverpool: Mignolet; Manquillo, Skrtel, Toure, Moreno; Lucas, Can, Allen; Lallana, Markovic, Borini.

Spencer Medcalf: I think Mr C Ronaldo will be the proud holder of the record for Champions League top scorer by about 10 o'clock tonight...

Dave in Somerset: Lambert doesn't even make the bench? Why did Rodgers buy him again? Great way to treat a player, particularly a model professional. Hope Liverpool get thrashed.

    Borussia Dortmund's Westfalenstadion

Elsewhere in the Champions League this evening, Bayer Leverkusen have already strengthened their position at the top of Group C with a 2-1 win over Zenit St Petersburg thanks to a second-half brace from South Korea forward Son Heung-Min. Zenit pulled a goal back late on through Jose Salomon Rondon. Benfica, bottom of the pool with one point, host Monaco knowing they must win to have any realistic hope of reaching the last 16.

Surprise Group A leaders Olympiakos face a test of their credentials to make the knockout phase with a trip to Italian champions Juventus. Second-placed Atletico Madrid, who reached last year's final, travel to Sweden to face Malmo who they thrashed 5-0 last time out.

Liverpool fans will have one eye on Basel's home game against Ludogorets Razgrad in Group B, while Arsenal supporters will hope Galatasaray can pull off a shock in Germnay against Borussia Dortmund to open the door to top spot in Group D.

  202. One of the best...

Real Madrid v Liverpool (19:45 GMT)

    Alvaro Arbeloa

Real Madrid defender Alvaro Arbeloa says team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo is one of football's all-time greats as he chases Raul's Champions League goals record.

"He has more goals than games for Real Madrid. Just think about that! It is amazing."

Arbeloa faces his old side tonight and says the Reds are still "a really good team" despite "having some problems" since the departure of Luis Suarez in the summer.

The Spain international says the arrival of Mario Balotelli and injury to Daniel Sturridge have forced Liverpool to change their style, but believes Real Madrid will still have to be at their best to beat the Reds at the Bernabeu.

Yeah, alright, so Cristiano Ronaldo isn't a midfielder any more. But I get the feeling you could ask him to play in the anchor role and he'd be the best in the world.

He's scored in 12 games in a row, and scored 22 goals this season already. Twenty-two! It's not even Fireworks Night yet...

Liverpool fans used to claim they had the best midfield in the land in that chant from the Kop - but tonight they may get a good look at the current holders of that title.

With all due respect to Momo Sissoko, even in his pomp he would struggle to get a game with Carlo Ancelotti's boys.

Luka Modric, Toni Kroos, Isco, James Rodriguez, Sami Khedira, Asier Illarramendi, Gareth Bale and, er, Cristiano Ronaldo.

No such messing about from Real Madrid. Cristiano Ronaldo, one short of equalling Raul's all-time Champions League record of 71 goals, is front and centre in a side that also features Karim Benzema, James Rodriguez and Toni Kroos.

    Gary Rowett

In the Championship this evening, Gary Rowett takes charge of his first home game as Birmingham City manager, but his side face a tough test against a Watford side sitting pretty at the top of the table and who are still unbeaten under manager Slavisa Jokanovic.

It is also a special night for Ipswich boss Mick McCarthy, who in his 100th competitive game in charge welcomes former club Wolves to Portman Road.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers certainly didn't try to talk down the task facing his side tonight - calling Real the best team in the world.

Real, the defending European champions, top La Liga and beat Barcelona 3-1 last month.

"They are probably the best team in the world at the moment and we really look forward to big games," he said.
