England and Chelsea Ladies forward Eni Aluko: "Behind the scenes Chelsea will be doing recovery work with Diego Costa, he is their best player. And he will be wanting to play every game.

"When I am 70% or 80% fit I am saying to my coach that I want to play, no matter what the medical staff say. I hope they do get him fit because he has been frightening with eight goals already."

Diego Costa's good, isn't he? Always full of beans, he has quickly impressed his aroma on the Premier League - and it smells pretty sweet if you're a Chelsea supporter.

The Spain striker, a summer signing from Atletico Madrid, scored his eighth goal of the season in Chelsea's 3-0 victory over Aston Villa - despite his manager Jose Mourinho admitting after the game that the hitman is barely training because of hamstring problems.

"He's doing almost nothing in training," said Mourinho. "He's just resting and recovering from the tight muscle he has."

  3. 'Be more discreet'published at 12:28 British Summer Time 28 September 2014

    MOTD2 Extra

England and Chelsea Ladies forward Eni Aluko: "Wayne Rooney intended to do it as a professional foul in response to the counter attack but it was reckless, there was no need to lash out like that. I have always been taught that a professional foul should be discreet. The problem was it was too violent."

  4. 'Rooney on the edge'published at 12:27 British Summer Time 28 September 2014

    Former Everton winger Kevin Kilbane

"I wouldn't want to condemn Rooney because he scored a brilliant goal. He's in in great form at the moment. We've seen it over the last 15 years that when Rooney is in his best form he's on the edge."

  5. Rooney feeling the pressure?published at 12:27 British Summer Time 28 September 2014

Is Wayne Rooney feeling the pressure of captaining both Manchester United and England? BBC Sport's chief football writer Phil McNulty has been analysing that very issue in his latest column.

McNulty writes: "There is no doubt Louis van Gaal and England manager Roy Hodgson will be watching for vital signs that the cares and responsibilities of captaincy do not lead to Rooney placing increased pressure on himself and leading to the sort of incident witnessed at Old Trafford on Saturday."

  6. 'Rooney's red mist'published at 12:24 British Summer Time 28 September 2014

BBC Match of the Day commentator John Motson
    MOTD2 Extra

"I was besieged by fans at Old Trafford saying it was harsh but it was reckless and reckless means a red card. I think Wayne Rooney just lost his temper, there had been an appeal turned down for handball just before and I think it was the red mist again.

"It looks awful every time you see it. He is the captain of England too. There was a time when people would be saying he should be setting a better example than that."

  7. Rooney's three-game banpublished at 12:22 British Summer Time 28 September 2014

Wayne Rooney will now miss matches against Everton, West Brom and Chelsea. It capped a bittersweet day for him, after he had earlier scored his 176th Premier League goal - overtaking Thierry Henry's total to put him third on the competition's all-time scoring list.

"Wayne will be a great miss, as he played very well and I was very pleased with him," Van Gaal told BBC Sport. "I call that a professional foul. Maybe you don't want to hear it but in professional football you make professional fouls."

Manchester United's Wayne Rooney was sent off in the 2-1 home victory against West Ham on Saturday. Is the pressure of the United captaincy getting to the 28-year-old?

Favour Wilfred:, external Why make a big deal out of it? Steven Gerrard has been sent off, John Terry, Zinedine Zidane, so what is it about Rooney? For all you haters, red still runs through his body, so quit smoking him.

Anvesh Mallick:, external Why is the media treating him this? He isn't the first United captain to get sent off. Nemanja Vidic, Eric Cantona or Roy Keane get red and they are fearless leaders. Wayne gets red, he is irresponsible! His captaincy has just started!

Glyn Davies:, external No the captaincy is not affecting him. As someone who was at the match he was everywhere for the 60 minutes he was on. One mistimed (because that's all it was ) tackle whilst chasing back and everyone is acting like the bloke killed someone!

Wayne Rooney never fails to give us something to talk about, does he? He scored in Manchester United's nervy 2-1 victory over West Ham, then got sent off for a wild kick at a marauding Stewart Downing. His manager Louis van Gaal said referee Lee Mason made the correct decision, and the Reds skipper will now serve a three-game suspension.

On one of the radio phone-ins I listened to last night, it was suggested Rooney's position as a role model means young children up and down the country will be hacking down opponents this week as they emulate their hero.

    Really? I'm not so sure...

The G-Mac we'll be talking about today will be West Brom's Gareth McAuley, but you can share the love - Ryder Cup on one screen, Sunday football on the other. Joking aside, there's actually a lot to look forward to.

First there's the battle of two of the Championship's best sides - Reading and Wolves - and then we'll switch our attentions to the day's only Premier League game... West Brom versus Burnley.

"How are the Europeans getting on against the Americans?"

"I'm not sure, but I can tell you the Reading v Wolves score."

Ok, today's Sunday football might not have the allure of the Ryder Cup... but it's still going to be good, right?
