  1. Post update

    Atletico

Those Atletico celebrations might carry on well into the early hours, but it is time for us to make our excuses and call it a night. But don't worry, we'll be raring to go again this weekend - for the opening round of La Liga fixtures. Make sure you join us on Sunday (from about 19:30 BST) when we will have live text commentary of Barcelona's first game against Elche. Adios!

  2. ATLETICO WIN SUPERCOPA

    Atletico Madrid 1-0 Real Madrid

Plenty of pumped-up Atletico fans are still dancing in their seats at the Calderon. Rojiblancos boss Diego Simeone is taking pictures of his adoring public, before urging them to make even more noise. Not sure that's even possible...

  3. Stat attack

    Atletico Madrid 1-0 Real Madrid

    Iker Casillas

Real Madrid keeper Iker Casillas loses for the first time against Atletico Madrid after 29 games in all competitions.

  4. ATLETICO WIN SUPERCOPA

    Atletico Madrid 1-0 Real Madrid

As the Atletico players bounce around the Calderon - to the sound, naturally, of Queen's 'We Are the Champions' - on their lap of honour, their Real counterparts slope off into the dark Madrid night.

  5. ATLETICO WIN SUPERCOPA

    Atletico Madrid 1-0 Real Madrid

A huge roar goes up around the Calderon as the jubilant Atletico players collect the Supercopa trophy. Three men - Koke, Diego Godin and Raul Garcia - lift the shiny silverware before legging back on to the grass to join their team-mates for the first of many group photos.

  6. ATLETICO WIN SUPERCOPA

    Atletico Madrid 1-0 Real Madrid

It is only the second time that Atletico have won the Supercopa - the last time came way back in 1985. Many of their current crop were not even born!

  7. Join the debate at #bbceurofooty

    Carlo Ancelotti

Patrick: If Simeone keeps his players fit all season. I can't see why they can't defend their title. Raul Garcia and Koke are just gifted.

Andrew Priestley: Real Madrid have spent a huge £65m on James Rodriguez, but are letting an arguably better player in Angel Di Maria leave.

  8. ATLETICO WIN SUPERCOPA

    Atletico Madrid 1-0 Real Madrid

The home bench races on to the Calderon pitch to celebrate with the red and white shirts already out there. Matchwinner Mario Mandzukic is beaming from ear-to-ear as the Atletico fans crank up the volume.

  9. FULL-TIME

    Atletico Madrid 1-0 Real Madrid

And it is all over. Referee David Fernandez toots the final whistle to spark joyous celebrations from the Atletico fans and players.

The La Liga champions win the Spanish Supercopa!

  10. INJURY TIME

    Atletico Madrid 1-0 Real Madrid

Real goalkeeper Iker Casillas goes route one, launching up a goal kick which manages to force an away corner. It's like a WWE match in the Atletico box as the players grapple, push and shirt tug. No sharpshooters though. The referee gives a foul to Atletico and that should be about that.

  11. RED CARD

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Real Madrid (Luka Modric)

And they must salvage something with just 10 men. Luka Modric - that angelic-looking midfielder - is the man to be ordered off as he clatters into Cristian Rodriguez. That earns him a second yellow card and a place alongside Atleti boss Diego Simeone in the seats behind the benches.

  12. SUBSTITUTION

    Atletico Madrid 1-0 Real Madrid

Another time-wasting trick, sorry substitution, for Atletico. Raul Garcia - a strong candidate for man of the match - is replaced by Saul. Four minutes of injury time to Real to deny their neighbours.

  13. Post update

    Atletico Madrid 1-0 Real Madrid

More whistles as Cristiano Ronaldo lurks with intent on the edge of the Atletico area. But the home defence remain firm, a couple of Rojiblanco shirts diving in front of the Portuguese star's vicious shot. Two minutes, plus stoppage time, left.

  14. SUBSTITUTION

    Atletico Madrid 1-0 Real Madrid

Cristian Rodriguez - Atletico's very own supersub - trots on for his seemingly mandatory appearance from the bench. The Uruguyan, who made a whopping 32 substitute appearances last season replaces goalscorer Mario Mandzukic , who is given a standing ovation by the Calderon. Diego who?

  15. Post update

    Atletico Madrid 1-0 Real Madrid

Frankly, I still don't know. Both teams have carved out chances, both teams are still playing at 90 miles an hour. It could, still, go either way. Gareth Bale sticks Real's latest half-chance wide - horribly miscuing an ambitious volley from a tight angle.

  16. TEN TO GO

    Atletico Madrid 1-0 Real Madrid

Ten minutes left for Atletico to see out the win and claim the Supercopa. Ten minutes left for Real to nab at least an equaliser. Which is it going to be?

  17. YELLOW CARD

    Atletico Madrid 1-0 Real Madrid

Real's Isco and Atletico rival Raul Jimenez have only been on the pitch for a matter of moments, but it doesn't take the two substitutes to get into a tangle. Isco becomes the latest name to be taken by referee David Fernandez. He might need a second notebook soon to put all these names in.

Real Madrid's Portuguese forward Cristiano Ronaldo vies with Atletico Madrid"s Brazilian defender Joa Miranda de Souza

Andy: Atletico haven't beaten Real at home since 1999! That's 15 years without a home victory against their biggest rivals. The nerves will soon start to show.

Jenni: Cristiano Ronaldo to show us why he's the world's best in this second half, whether he's fully fit or not.

Tom in Newcastle: A sign of Spanish superiority over English teams, the luxury of replacing Toni Kroos with a certain Senor Ronaldo.

  19. SUBSTITUTION

    Atletico Madrid 1-0 Real Madrid

And that's Griezmann's last action. The diddy Frenchman is replaced by towering Mexico striker Raul Jimenez, who is making his Atletico debut after a recent £7m move from his homeland. A few moments earlier, Real made their last tactical switch - Marcelo replacing fellow left-back Fabio Coentrao. Hope Marcelo has got Brazil's 7-1 mauling against Germany out of his system...

  20. Post update

    Atletico Madrid 1-0 Real Madrid

Back up to the other end....Koke whizzes a long-range effort over the Real bar, before sloppy defending from the visitors gifts possession to Antoine Griezmann. But the young Frenchman, a summer signing from Real Sociedad, loses his head and scuffs one across the face of goal.

  21. Post update

    Atletico Madrid 1-0 Real Madrid

Whistles ring out around the Calderon as Cristiano Ronaldo hovers over a 25-yard free-kick. Perhaps it is because referee David Fernandez appears to have forgotten to bring his vanishing spray with him. Those jeers turn to cheers as Ronaldo's dipping shot bashes the head of one member of the Atletico wall.

Cristiano Ronaldo prepares to execute a free kick
  22. SUBSTITUTION

    Atletico Madrid 1-0 Real Madrid

    James Rodriguez

If things aren't quite happening for Real Madrid - and they're not at the moment - then Carlo Ancelotti knows he has plenty of ammunition on the bench. Off goes £70m World Cup star James Rodriguez. On comes Spain attacking midfielder Isco, who signed for a meagre £23m last summer.

  23. PENALTY APPEAL

    Atletico Madrid 1-0 Real Madrid

    Gareth Bale

Penalty for Real? Gareth Bale thinks so. The Welshman is sent sprawling just inside the Atletico box, throwing his arms into the air in protest to the referee after he tries to bamboozle a sliding Tiago with a Zidane-inspired Marseilles turn. The man in the middle is having none of it. Play on...

  24. Join the debate at #bbceurofooty

UnSimpleSimon: Real's over reliance on CR7 gives some weight to Barca's wisdom of having Messi, Neymar, & Suarez in the same team.

Hector Emerick: There is no way Real Madrid will be able to win the sextuple. Lets not forget that they didnt win the La liga.

  25. Post update

    Atletico Madrid 1-0 Real Madrid

The noise volume inside the Calderon goes up another notch as the home side pile on the pressure. A corner comes to nothing and then we see our first glimpse of Cristiano Ronaldo. The world player of the year flies past Atletico full-back Miranda, whipping in a low cross from the left to force a corner. But team-mate Raphael Varane cannot hit the target.

  26. Post update

    Atletico Madrid 1-0 Real Madrid

Real's coach Carlo Ancelotti, gestures during a Spanish Supercup second leg

Raul Garcia is having some Friday night fun tonight. Now he just needs to take a goal home with him. He goes close again as he spins a first-time time shot from Juanfran's lay-off just away from Iker Casillas's far post. Anxious times for Real boss Carlo Ancelotti.

  27. Post update

    Atletico Madrid 1-0 Real Madrid

End to end stuff at the moment. I'm struggling to get my breath. Another Atleti chance as Koke steams into the Real penalty area and, just as he is about to pull the trigger, sees away right-back Daniel Carvajal nip in to stop him.

  28. YELLOW CARD

    Atletico Madrid 1-0 Real Madrid

Atletico's Raul Garcia has been in the thick of the action tonight and here he is again. He tries a cheeky 'knock and run' around Real's Xabi Alonso - who cleans him out. Yellow card.

  29. HITS THE WOODWORK

    Atletico Madrid 1-0 Real Madrid

Oooh - almost an Atletico second goal. Koke, with that wand of a right foot, picks out the head of Raul Garcia from a free-kick on the right and the crossbar comes to Real's rescue. A couple of home players look to pounce on the rebound but Real keeper Iker Casillas reacts quickest to claw the ball away from his net. Top goalkeeping from the recently under-fire veteran.

  30. Post update

    Atletico Madrid 1-0 Real Madrid

You can't a get a good man down, they say. You certainly can't get Diego Simeone to sit down. The Atletico boss seems to have shifted a whole row of seated home fans so he can prowl around his new spot in the main stand on his feet.

  31. KICK-OFF

    Atletico Madrid 1-0 Real Madrid

The referee blows his whistle, Real striker Karim Benzema taps the ball to James Rodriguez and that means the second half is under way. Game on.

  32. SUBSTITUTION

    Atletico Madrid 1-0 Real Madrid

Here he is. Who? You know who. Cristiano Ronaldo. The Real Madrid superstar replaces Toni Kroos at the break.

  33. What history tells us

    Atletico Madrid 1-0 Real Madrid

After Mandzukic's opener for Atletico, only a 1-1 draw will send this tie into extra-time. However, history tells us that the Supercopa does not usually go all the way to that gut-wrenching spectacle we call a penalty shootout.

None of the previous 30 Supercopa finals have gone to penalties, although each of the last two ties have been decided by the away goals rule.

Last year Barcelona won a record 11th Super Cup on away goals as they drew 0-0 with Atletico Madrid after Lionel Messi's late penalty miss.

  34. Text us on 81111

Chaz in Derby: Madrid are undoubtedly missing Ronaldo. It just shows how important he is to them as they can't seem to break down this stubborn Atletico Madrid defence. But I can't help but wonder if Ronaldo makes a team of world class players tick, what does that make Ronaldo?

Chris in Surrey: Simeone's red card reminds me...How did Uefa only give him a one match ban for his ridiculous behaviour at the Champions League final. Laughable leniency for Spanish clubs as always.

  35. Stat attack

    Atletico Madrid 1-0 Real Madrid

    Mario Mandzukic

Mario Mandzukic's goal has been officially clocked at 81 seconds - the fastest Supercopa goal ever. Quick.

  36. HALF-TIME

    Atletico Madrid 1-0 Real Madrid

Having another look at the Atletico goal - route one football at its finest. You could swap Atletico's Miguel Angel Moya, Antoine Griezmann and Mario Mandzukic for Wimbledon trio Dave Beasant, Alan Cork and John Fashanu and no-one would be the wiser. Ex-Crazy Gang boss Dave Bassett will be sat somewhere watching with a beaming smile.

  37. Join the debate at #bbceurofooty

Stephen Milward: Anyone doubting if Bale is a match winner hasn't watched him for the last five years.

Peter Collins: I hope Real don't bring on Ronaldo. If he was fit he would have started, and they should try to protect their talisman.

  38. Stat Attack

Atletico Madrid's head coach Diego Simeone
    • Diego Simeone has been sent off in two of the last three matches against Real Madrid in all competitions.
    • Cristiano Ronaldo, who starts on the bench tonight, has scored in three of his last four derbies against Atletico Madrid.
  39. HALF-TIME

    Atletico Madrid 1-0 Real Madrid

    James Rodriguez

Play quickly switches to the other end as James Rodriguez flicks a teasing shot inches past the Atletico post on the stroke of half-time. That's almost the last action as referee David Fernandez blows for the break. Advantage Atletico.

  40. Post update

    Atletico Madrid 1-0 Real Madrid

And from the resulting corner Raul Garcia has an even better chance! The Atletico man is left unmarked, as his alleged marker Fabio Coentrao gets into a flap, but somehow powers his effort over the bar. Garcia looks very sheepish - and so he should.

  41. Post update

    Atletico Madrid 1-0 Real Madrid

Real have dominated possession since that flying Atletico start - having 61% of the ball apparently. But only one statistic matters - the scoreline. And then, out of nowhere, Raul Garcia goes close to adding a second. The attacking midfielder blasts one from distance as Iker Casillas scrambles across his goal to tip wide.

  42. Join the debate at #bbceurofooty

Peter Collins: That could almost be the worst person to lose for Atletico. The Simeone effect is really something.

  43. Text us on 81111

Sheelagh: Can this Real Madrid side react with their talisman Cristiano Ronaldo? Time for Gareth Bale to stand up and be counted as a match winner?

  44. Post update

    Atletico Madrid 1-0 Real Madrid

Gareth Bale (have we mentioned him yet?) finally sees sight of the Atleti goal. The Welshman is picked out on the edge of the area by James Rodriguez, neatly skips inside a flailing Diego Godin, only to drag his shot wide of Miguel Angel Moya's left-hand post. Los Blancos need the £85m man to pop up with a goal.

  45. TEN TO GO

    Atletico Madrid 1-0 Real Madrid

Real Madrid enjoy a decent spell of possession, drawing whistles from the Atleti supporters, as they ping the ball around on the edge of the home penalty box. Luka Modric, sporting that still-unfamiliar short crop, clips in an inviting cross from the right, met by the head of James Rodriguez. But the Colombian steers his effort wide. Better from Real as the first half ticks into the final 10 minutes.

Croatian midfielder Luka Modric vies with Atletico Madrid's midfielder Koke
  46. Stat Attack

    Croatian forward Mario Mandzukic celebrates
    • That's Mario Mandzukic's first official goal for Atletico.
    • Atletico Madrid (20) conceded almost twice as many fouls as Real Madrid (11) in the first leg.
  47. Post update

    Atletico Madrid 1-0 Real Madrid

How will Atletico cope without their glorious leader? Very well. Los Rojiblancos force a corner as they press for a second. Not enough quality in the final third as Real's defence see out the danger.

  48. RED CARD

    Atletico Madrid 1-0 Real Madrid

Not for any of the players - but for Atletico coach Diego Simeone. The Argentine was already showing signs of getting a bit hot under the collar and combusts just moments later. What for? Not entirely sure. Something rankled Simeone, who starts gesturing far too close to the assistant referee's face and then appears to pat the official on the back of the head. Only one result there - and Simeone is off to the stands.

Atletico Madrid's Argentinian coach Diego Simeone argues with the 4th referee
  49. Post update

    Atletico Madrid 1-0 Real Madrid

Now here's a bit of quality from Real Madrid. James Rodriguez plays a neat one-two with Daniel Carvajal, before the £70m man's low curling effort is palmed clear by Athletic keeper Moya. That's the visitors' best chance of the night.

Real Madrid's James Rodriguez kicks the ball past Atletico Madrid's goalkeeper Miguel
  50. Post update

    Atletico Madrid 1-0 Real Madrid

    Diego Simeone

Diego Simeone, as usual, is stood menacingly on the touchline. Now he's remonstrating with the official David Fernandez after Toni Kroos ploughs into the back of Raul Garcia. All got a bit scrappy.

  51. YELLOW CARD

    Atletico Madrid 1-0 Real Madrid

The temperature is rising in the Vicente Calderon. Both sets of players surround the poor referee three times in a matter of minutes. Atletico midfielder Koke's wild lunge on James Rodriguez, his team-mate Tiago's yellow card for arguing and an aerial clash between Mario Mandzukic and Real defender Sergio Ramos are the antagonists.

  52. Post update

    Atletico Madrid 1-0 Real Madrid

Atleti attacking pair Antoine Griezmann and Mario Mandzukic look a useful combo in these early stages. Your archetypal little and large combo (not the 1980s British comedy duo). Mandzukic does the donkey work again, the ball dropping to Griezmann whose deflected shot drifts harmlessly wide.

  53. Join the debate at #bbceurofooty

Rian Hoskins: Mandzukic is not as powerful as Costa but he is a top striker who scores regularly, works hard and assists the midfield well.

Peter Collins: How early can we say call for Ronaldo?

  54. Post update

    Atletico Madrid 1-0 Real Madrid

Real are stirring. However, Atletico keeper Miguel Angel Moya - the replacement for returning Chelsea loanee Thibaut Courtois - hardly has to break sweat. Moya, unchallenged, claims a wayward cross from the right, then Fabio Coentrao smashes a centre from the opposite side into the stand.

Atletico Madrid's goalkeeper Angel Moya reacts during the Spanish Supercup
  55. Post update

    German Bundesliga

And that is a good opportunity to tell you how Bayern fared in their Bundesliga opener. Craig's right - Mandzukic's replacement Robert Lewandowski, who joined from arch rivals Borussia Dortmund, was pretty quiet against visitors Wolsfburg.

But it didn't stop Pep Guardiola's men winning 2-1 after goals from Thomas Muller and Arjen Robben. Who else.

  56. Text us on 81111

Andy in Armagh: It's looking likely that Angel Di Maria is on the verge of leaving Real Madrid, with Manchester United should absolutely break the bank to sign him, for large parts of last season he was in better form and more effective than the likes of Messi, Neymar, Ronaldo and Bale. Also, the way he reacted to the signing of Gareth Bale last summer, re-inventing himself as an attacking midfielder showed his mental strength.

Craig: I wonder how smug Mandzukic will be knowing that his replacement (Lewandowski) has had a very poor game for Bayern tonight.

  57. Post update

    Atletico Madrid 1-0 Real Madrid

Atletico are still pouring forward, as a shell-shocked Real are pinned back on the ropes. The visitors are panicking at the back as Atletico's Koke goes tumbling in the box. No penalty.

  58. GOAL

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Real Madrid - Mario Mandzukic (2 mins)

Wow! Told you it was a rapid start. Route one stuff from Atletico as goalkeeper Moya's long boot forward is flicked into the path of Mario Mandzukic by Antoine Griezmann. And the summer signing from Bayern Munich makes no mistake, hammering in a first time shot. The home side lead 2-1 on aggregate.

Atletico Madrid's Croatian forward Mario Mandzukic celebrates after scoring
  59. KICK-OFF

    Atletico Madrid 0-0 Real Madrid

Now it's show-time. Atletico make a flying start as Mario Mandzukic steams forward straight from kick-off. The tempo is going to be rapid.

  60. Post update

The Vicente Calderon is a sea of red and blue, and in fine voice, as the two teams jog out of the tunnel. Handshakes done, coin toss done, huddles done. They're ready....

  61. Stat attack

Diego Simeone could become only the second coach to lift the Supercopa with Atletico, after Luis Aragones.

Carlo Ancelotti could become the first Italian manager to win the Supercopa. Compatriot Claudio Ranieri lost in 2004 with Valencia.

View of the Spanish Super Cup trophy before the second leg match of the Super Cup between Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid
  62. Post update

More interesting than Cristiano Ronaldo's absence from the Real Madrid starting XI is the omission of Angel Di Maria and Sami Khedira. Neither player is named on the bench by Carlo Ancelotti among fevered speculation they could be set for the Premier League.

  63. Text us on 81111

Andrew: Real Madrid could have their work cut out for them tonight. Atletico have shown last season that they are no mugs, especially at home and they are very dangerous from set-pieces, an area that Real Madrid are weak in. Real will need to be at their best tonight in order to win.

  64. Join the debate at #bbceurofooty

John McEnerney: Atletico Madrid haven't replaced as well as they needed to, 3rd in La Liga & may sneak out of the group in Champions League can't see them doing much this year.

Shay: You are saying that it's late in Britain? Exactly 1:15am here in Pakistan. Yes, Real can - in fact they should - win the sextuple.

  65. Post update

    Atletico Madrid flags and scarf's

BBC Sport's Azi Farni in Madrid: "Many fans outside the Calderon think the club will be OK without star striker Diego Costa. The most important thing for them is that manager Diego Simeone has stayed."

  66. Post update

With all the hullabaloo surrounding the summer shopping sprees of Real Madrid and Barcelona - who have both been splashing the cash more extravagantly than a scorned wife let loose with her rich husband's credit card - it has been easy to forget that it is Atletico who are the reigning Spanish champions.

But they aren't the same team that they were last season. Top scorer Diego Costa - gone. La Liga's best goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois - gone. Marauding left-back Felipe Luis - gone.

"Atletico are the champions, but the players are not the same. We are in a different league to Barca and Real," admits pragmatic Atleti boss Diego Simeone.

  67. Post update

    Cristiano Ronaldo

"Cristiano Ronaldo is fine and is available. He could start." - Carlo Ancelotti told the media on Thursday.

Friday - Cristiano Ronaldo does not start for Real Madrid. The world player of the year, 29, suffered a back injury in Tuesday's first leg and, we presume, is only fit enough for the Calderon bench.

  68. Line ups

Atletico Madrid: Moya, Juanfran, Miranda, Godin, Siqueira, Gabi, Tiago, Koke, R.Garcia, Griezmann, Mandzukic. Subs: Oblak, Ansaldi, Gimenez, Suarez, Rodriguez, Saul, Jimenez.

Real Madrid: Casillas, Carvajal, Ramos, Varane, Coentrao, Xabi Alonso, Modric, Rodriguez, Bale, Kroos, Benzema. Subs: Keylor Navas, Pepe, Ronaldo, Marcelo, Arbeloa, Isco, Illarra.

  69. Post update

Hola amigos! Welcome to live coverage of the all-Madrid Supercopa - Spain's equivalent of the Community Shield - which marks the start of their domestic season.

As you already know, this one is delicately balanced. Atletico have the benefit of an away goal but it could be a late one if extra-time and, gulp, penalties are needed to separate them and Real.

Luckily, most of you won't have an alarm clock set on Saturday morning.

  70. Post update

    Atletico Madrid

Not if they are beaten by neighbours Atletico Madrid tonight, they can't.

Real's galaxy of superstars head across the Spanish capital to the Vicente Calderon, where hosts Atletico return with a handy 1-1 draw in their back pocket from Tuesday's first leg after Raul Garcia's late equaliser.

Handy because Diego Simeone's were almost unstoppable on home turf last season. In 30 matches, only one team managed to beat them at the Vicente Calderon. The team? Real Madrid.

  71. Post update

    Real Madrid

    One down, five to go.

Real Madrid are a club used to winning silverware - as anyone who has wandered around the Bernabeu's cavernous trophy room can testify. I've been in smaller semi-detached houses.

This season, they have already lifted one more chunky piece of metal, the Uefa Super Cup, and tonight could get their mitts on another.

Victory in the Spanish Super Copa would hand a second trophy to Carlo Ancelotti and his merry men - and that's even before they start their La Liga, Champions League, Copa Del Rey and Club World Cup campaigns. Madrid's can't do the sextuple. Can they?
