And from the resulting corner Raul Garcia has an even better chance! The Atletico man is left unmarked, as his alleged marker Fabio Coentrao gets into a flap, but somehow powers his effort over the bar. Garcia looks very sheepish - and so he should.

Real have dominated possession since that flying Atletico start - having 61% of the ball apparently. But only one statistic matters - the scoreline. And then, out of nowhere, Raul Garcia goes close to adding a second. The attacking midfielder blasts one from distance as Iker Casillas scrambles across his goal to tip wide.

Peter Collins, external: That could almost be the worst person to lose for Atletico. The Simeone effect is really something.

Sheelagh: Can this Real Madrid side react with their talisman Cristiano Ronaldo? Time for Gareth Bale to stand up and be counted as a match winner?

Gareth Bale (have we mentioned him yet?) finally sees sight of the Atleti goal. The Welshman is picked out on the edge of the area by James Rodriguez, neatly skips inside a flailing Diego Godin, only to drag his shot wide of Miguel Angel Moya's left-hand post. Los Blancos need the £85m man to pop up with a goal.

  6. TEN TO GOpublished at 22:07 British Summer Time 22 August 2014

Real Madrid enjoy a decent spell of possession, drawing whistles from the Atleti supporters, as they ping the ball around on the edge of the home penalty box. Luka Modric, sporting that still-unfamiliar short crop, clips in an inviting cross from the right, met by the head of James Rodriguez. But the Colombian steers his effort wide. Better from Real as the first half ticks into the final 10 minutes.

    • That's Mario Mandzukic's first official goal for Atletico.

    • Atletico Madrid (20) conceded almost twice as many fouls as Real Madrid (11) in the first leg.

How will Atletico cope without their glorious leader? Very well. Los Rojiblancos force a corner as they press for a second. Not enough quality in the final third as Real's defence see out the danger.

  9. RED CARDpublished at 22:00 British Summer Time 22 August 2014

Not for any of the players - but for Atletico coach Diego Simeone. The Argentine was already showing signs of getting a bit hot under the collar and combusts just moments later. What for? Not entirely sure. Something rankled Simeone, who starts gesturing far too close to the assistant referee's face and then appears to pat the official on the back of the head. Only one result there - and Simeone is off to the stands.

Now here's a bit of quality from Real Madrid. James Rodriguez plays a neat one-two with Daniel Carvajal, before the £70m man's low curling effort is palmed clear by Athletic keeper Moya. That's the visitors' best chance of the night.

Diego Simeone, as usual, is stood menacingly on the touchline. Now he's remonstrating with the official David Fernandez after Toni Kroos ploughs into the back of Raul Garcia. All got a bit scrappy.

  12. YELLOW CARDpublished at 21:50 British Summer Time 22 August 2014

The temperature is rising in the Vicente Calderon. Both sets of players surround the poor referee three times in a matter of minutes. Atletico midfielder Koke's wild lunge on James Rodriguez, his team-mate Tiago's yellow card for arguing and an aerial clash between Mario Mandzukic and Real defender Sergio Ramos are the antagonists.

Atleti attacking pair Antoine Griezmann and Mario Mandzukic look a useful combo in these early stages. Your archetypal little and large combo (not the 1980s British comedy duo). Mandzukic does the donkey work again, the ball dropping to Griezmann whose deflected shot drifts harmlessly wide.

Rian Hoskins, external: Mandzukic is not as powerful as Costa but he is a top striker who scores regularly, works hard and assists the midfield well.

Peter Collins, external: How early can we say call for Ronaldo?

Real are stirring. However, Atletico keeper Miguel Angel Moya - the replacement for returning Chelsea loanee Thibaut Courtois - hardly has to break sweat. Moya, unchallenged, claims a wayward cross from the right, then Fabio Coentrao smashes a centre from the opposite side into the stand.

    German Bundesliga

And that is a good opportunity to tell you how Bayern fared in their Bundesliga opener. Craig's right - Mandzukic's replacement Robert Lewandowski, who joined from arch rivals Borussia Dortmund, was pretty quiet against visitors Wolsfburg.

But it didn't stop Pep Guardiola's men winning 2-1 after goals from Thomas Muller and Arjen Robben. Who else.

Andy in Armagh: It's looking likely that Angel Di Maria is on the verge of leaving Real Madrid, with Manchester United should absolutely break the bank to sign him, for large parts of last season he was in better form and more effective than the likes of Messi, Neymar, Ronaldo and Bale. Also, the way he reacted to the signing of Gareth Bale last summer, re-inventing himself as an attacking midfielder showed his mental strength.

Craig: I wonder how smug Mandzukic will be knowing that his replacement (Lewandowski) has had a very poor game for Bayern tonight.

Atletico are still pouring forward, as a shell-shocked Real are pinned back on the ropes. The visitors are panicking at the back as Atletico's Koke goes tumbling in the box. No penalty.

Wow! Told you it was a rapid start. Route one stuff from Atletico as goalkeeper Moya's long boot forward is flicked into the path of Mario Mandzukic by Antoine Griezmann. And the summer signing from Bayern Munich makes no mistake, hammering in a first time shot. The home side lead 2-1 on aggregate.

Now it's show-time. Atletico make a flying start as Mario Mandzukic steams forward straight from kick-off. The tempo is going to be rapid.
