    Barcelona

While the five new faces starting for Barcelona tonight are guaranteed a warm welcome, they won't receive anything like the rapturous reception that will be given to Luis Enrique.

The 44-year-old, who took over from the ill-fated reign of Tata Martino, is not a new face. The ex-Spain midfielder is a hugely popular figure following a distinguished playing career at the Nou Camp between 1996 and 2004. Now he's back....

Chris: As you've pointed out Real and Barca have reacted massively to Atleti winning the title last year. I think we may be headed for another 10-year two horse race.

Oli Kearey, external: ‏Great to see Rafinha getting a start for Barca tonight, brother of Thiago Alcantara - so much talent!

Rian Hoskins, external: Wonder how Rakitic does. Similar passer to Fabregas but more combative. Also watch out for Chelsea loanee Pasalic at Elche.

Andrew Priestley, external: Barca have strengthened well this summer especially in defence & in the goalkeeping department. Luis Suarez isn't bad either!

Despite receiving a potential £71m from the sale of James Rodriguez, Monaco coach Leonardo Jardim has already said his transfer business is finished.

"Monaco will recruit only if the situation is special," he said. "We have just to keep believing. There are always difficult moments in a season. We must raise our heads and believe in our players."

Mind you, with Colombian Radamel Falcao and former Tottenham striker Dimitar Berbatov in attack they aren't exactly short on firepower. If Falcao stays that is.......

Life isn't great if you are a Monaco fan at the moment. First, they lose World Cup golden boot winner James Rodriguez to Real Madrid then they make a disastrous start to their domestic campaign.

Owner Dmitry Rybolovlev spent big last summer after Monaco's top-flight return but coach Claudio Ranieri left the club after guiding them to second place, nine points behind champions Paris St-Germain this year.

His successor, Leonardo Jardim, has started with successive defeats and this evening faces a trip to unbeaten Nantes. Life without James isn't looking too rosy at the moment.

Our friends at Opta have provided the above graphic showing Lionel Messi doesn't just score goals for Barcelona - he makes them too. Real Madrid's Angel Di Maria has the second highest assists in the league since 2010 but, with Manchester United close to his signature, he doesn't look like adding to that.

Feeling a bit lost scanning the names in that Barcelona side? Don't worry - there are five unfamiliar names in it. New Barca boss Luis Enrique hands debuts to goalkeeper Claudio Bravo, centre-back Jeremy Mathieu, midfielder Ivan Rakitic, plus young attackers Munir and Rafinha.

Luis Suarez is the standout name among Barcelona's new arrivals, but the rest of the summer signings are no mugs either.

    • Marc-Andre ter Stegen (goalkeeper) - Borussia Monchengladbach

    • Jeremy Mathieu (defender) - Valencia

    • Thomas Vermaelen (defender) - Arsenal

    • Ivan Rakitic (midfielder) - Sevilla

But one man still rules the roost at the Nou Camp....

Luis. Suarez. Two words which you will probably have heard, read or uttered every day since that World Cup game.

The Uruguayan has not been out of the news since taking a chunk out of Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini's shoulder. Firstly because of that vicious act and his subsequent four-month ban, then because he managed to still tie up a dream £75m move to Barca.

Of course, Suarez won't be appearing in the famous red and blue tonight. His appeal against the Fifa-imposed playing suspension was upheld, although he is now allowed to take part in other "football-related activities". And that means one cameraman at the Nou Camp will be on 'Suarez watch' tonight.

  16. Breaking Barca team newspublished at 19:25 British Summer Time 24 August 2014

As expected, there is no Neymar in the Barcelona squad. The Brazilian superstar was a doubt with an ankle injury before the club announced earlier that he would be sat in the stands.

Barca XI: Bravo, Alves, Mathieu, Mascherano, Alba, Busquets, Rakitic, Iniesta, Munir, Messi, Rafinha.

  17. Stat attackpublished at 19:21 British Summer Time 24 August 2014

Elche have never won an away league game against Barcelona - drawing seven and losing 13. They have conceded an average of 3.8 goals per game in their last five visits to the Nou Camp.

Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone is going for option one or option two. Option three is not an option, if you know what I mean. At least that's what the Argentine is saying publicly.

"I don't like lying to people, and one thing is clear: we cannot compete with Real and Barcelona. Atletico are the champions, but the players are not the same. We are in a different league to Barca and Real," reckons the honest boss.

  20. Dawning of a new era?published at 19:09 British Summer Time 24 August 2014

Now Atletico are expecting a backlash. Real Madrid responded by signing arguably the two best players at the World Cup - top scorer James Rodriguez and the man who made champions Germany tick, Toni Kroos - for a cool £100m.

And a humbled Barcelona have reacted in a big way too. They started by hiring a new manager. Then, they splashed out about £130m on six new players.

Tonight we are about to see our first glimpse of the new-look Barca (which admittedly has that familiar-looking spine of Lionel Messi, Andres Iniesta and Gerard Pique running through it). Minnows Elche are the first visitors to an expectant Nou Camp.
