Phillip Leigh:, external It's as bad as it gets! The United players should be ashamed of themselves absolutely ashamed! No spirit, no passion, no desire.

Chris Pearson: , externalSigning Di Maria is like putting Royal icing on a Victoria sponge cake. Looks good but it's still only a sponge cake underneath.

Jonathan Everett:, external LVG doesn't care about the League Cup. I bet he doesn't even know who MK Dons are. That was a training game to evaluate for him.

Pat, from Somerset, via text: United fans retain faith. The first 11 fit and firing is as good as any in England, LVG will put it right.

Kevin in Hornchurch, via text: Capital One Cup or no,t Utd are a shambles. LVG has hell of a task on his hands as media will keep pressure on in a way he has not experienced before. Defence is absolute comedy of errors.

More from MK Dons manager Karl Robinson: "Manchester United are massive, people will always want to pick bones in their side but my players deserve an awful lot of credit. We worked hard all week, sometimes you work hard and don't get what you deserve but the players did really, really well. It has been a perfect evening.

About Louis van Gaal signing autographs after the game: "To be fair to him, people can criticise that but that is not for me to say, I look up to him immensely. He was signing autographs for young children, whatever he decides to do at the end of a football match is not for me to talk about."

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal, speaking to Sky Sports: "It's a matter of making errors at wrong moments. When you see the goals against us, I believe they were big errors that you cannot make. Then it was 0-2 and it was very difficult to come back into the game. In the second half we created a lot of chances and didn't have the luck to score. Then two more errors and it's 0-3 and 0-4."

MK Dons manager Karl Robinson, speaking to BBC Radio 5 live: "I thought we were fearless. I am so proud of them. We tried to lock on to their two wide centre halves and play a little high and play brave football. We did an awful lot of work to prepare on Thursday and Friday but it is about heart and hunger to win football matches, and Ben Reeves' tenacity to win the ball is what we are all about."

On a weakened Manchester United team: "Someone reminded me that the two strikers were playing at a World Cup not so long ago. Then they put Adnan Januzaj on and you think 'here we go', but I thought my players deserve an awful lot of credit, their work ethic was sensational."

"If that is the attitude he (Louis van Gaal) came into the game with, that is the performance he deserved. If I was the manager I would be waiting to get at the players, not signing autographs. That is exactly why you get the performance he did.

"The players need to learn and learn very quickly. They were beaten in every facet of this football game. MK Dons were better for effort, will to win, skill, enthusiasm, everything."

  12. Player reactionpublished at 22:09 British Summer Time 26 August 2014

MK Dons skipper Dean Lewington, speaking to Sky Sports: "It's great. The occasion was fantastic and to actually beat them... I'm in disbelief. Hopefully by playing well it will encourage people to come back and watch us."

MK Dons manager Karl Robinson, speaking to Sky Sports: "We spoke before the game about their quality. The first 15 minutes, we found it difficult and looked disjointed but the players turned it round. I'm a little bit in shock... it's ridiculous and something dreams are made of. We've got two strikers fighting for the number nine shirt and they both scored twice each. They've set standards they now have to live up to. My players and my football club, and the city in general, deserve credit tonight."

Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech:, external Football is full of incredible moments... Really anything can happen during one football game... That's why I love it!

    Manchester United

There was nothing lucky about MK Dons' victory. They had more shots on target and even though Manchester United had four efforts on goal, the first of those did not arrive until after the 70th minute.

What on earth went wrong for United tonight?

"The manner of the performance from Manchester United for 85 minutes has been staggering in its ineptitude. You've got to give credit to MK Dons, they had a job and they did it perfectly and, to be honest, they absolutely dominated the game. Manchester United were so poor it beggared belief.

"You could see by the end of it United just wanted to get off the pitch. MK Dons were sensational and did everything you could ask of them.

"Louis van Gaal contributed by playing people out of position and a system that didn't suit them. They didn't know what they were doing, didn't know what they're playing. The players aren't that bad but they don't understand the system they're playing in."

Ady, from Leicester, via text: I am staggered that anyone is suggesting that this ranks up there with the all time great cup upsets. It would be if this was even remotely close to a first choice United line up. It isn't, so let's get things into perspective.

Paul, from Hamilton, via text: I honestly thought United couldn't get any worse. Well done Louis for proving me wrong.

Jenni, in Newtownards, via text: If you were new to football you could be forgiven thinking that MK Dons are the Premier League side and Manchester United the 'lowly' League One outfit. The defending has been so poor at times from Manchester United.

A strange reaction to the loss by Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal as, instead of darting down the tunnel as quickly as possible, he takes his time to sign a few autographs.

MK Dons players and manager Karl Robinson, meanwhile, are on the pitch applauding the jubilant fans. What a night for them.
