  2. HITS THE WOODWORKpublished at 21:08 British Summer Time 30 August 2014

And Roma are nearly punished twice in a matter of seconds for Gervinho's profligacy. Keeper Morgan De Sanctis has hardly had anything to do but comes to the rescue with two brilliant saves. First, he somehow tips a stinging free-kick on to his crossbar before produced another class save moments later. Quality stuff.

And - Arsenal fans won't be surprised to read - Gervinho wastes another golden opportunity moments later. The Roma man is put clean through, but takes a touch too many and shoots again straight at Murara Neto.

Could have been a goal of the season contender! Gervinho picks up the ball about 30 yards from the Fiorentina goal, jinks past a few white and purple shirts and finds himself staring into the eyes of away keeper Murara Neto. But the Brazilian stands tall to block the Ivorian's rising shot.

Toot toot! That's the sound of the referee's whistle as the Vicente Calderon welcomes back the champions. Visitors Eibar restart the match.

Roma carry on where they left off before the half-time breather. Talisman Francesco Totti's clips in a free-kick which is met by Miralem Pjanic at the far post. But the Bosnian scuffs his volley at the far post and the visitors hack clear.

  9. KICK-OFFpublished at 20:53 British Summer Time 30 August 2014

As one whistle goes in Spain, another goes across the Mediterranean Sea. The shrill in Rome's Stadio Olimpico is to signal the start of the second half. Game on.

    Atletico 2-1 EibarImage source, AP

Atletico's opening home match of La Liga season appeared to plain sailing after headed goals from Miranda and Mario Mandzukic. But then little Eibar threw a huge spanner (potentially) in the works. Plenty for Atleti boss Diego Simeone - sat in the stands as he serves an eight-match ban - to chew over.

  11. Juve start with winpublished at 20:51 British Summer Time 30 August 2014

Roma finished 17 points behind champions Juventus last season and don't want to slip three behind on the opening weekend.

Juve started their bid to win a fourth consecutive Serie A title with a comfortable 1-0 win at Chievo earlier. The Old Lady lost manager Antonio Conte this summer but won dominantly in Massimiliano Allegri's first game.

  12. Stat attackpublished at 20:46 British Summer Time 30 August 2014

Roma's Radja Nainggolan had scored his last Serie A goal right against Fiorentina, back in April.

With Ashley Cole making his Roma debut tonight, we want to know who you think has been Britain's finest (footballing) export.

  15. GREAT SAVE!published at 20:40 British Summer Time 30 August 2014

The end-to-end action shows no sign of letting up and this time it is Atletico forcing the issue.

Raul Garcia crafts space on the edge of the box, curls an effort goalwards and after a small deflection, Eibar keeper Xabi Irureta pulls out a stunning save.

He looked rooted but found spring from somewhere to keep his side in this. Around five minutes until the interval.

And that means it has been a comfortable evening for Ashley Cole. The ex-England man has rarely been threatened by Fiorentina down that left flank which he has patrolled with distinction for many a year.

  17. HALF-TIMEpublished at 20:34 British Summer Time 30 August 2014

A few of those flustered Fiorentina players are glad to hear that half-time whistle. As is Viola boss Vincenzo Montella who looks ready to explode as he marches down the Stadio Olimpico tunnel. Contrast that to the expressions on the Roma players.

They're delighted as they go for a sit down and quick massage. The Giallorossi have bossed this one.

  18. GOALpublished at 20:33 British Summer Time 30 August 2014

A stunner of a strike from Eibar left-back Abraham.

He cuts in from the left side and as play opens up for him, bends an effort with his weaker right foot into the top corner.

Diego Simeone looks on from the stands and takes a sip of his drink. That goal was worth toasting. Eibar back in it.

The clock is ticking down to half-time and we finally have a Fiorentina shot to tell you about. But it hardly troubles Roma keeper Morgan De Sanctis, who comfortably gathers substitute Josip Ilicic's drilled effort.

Stomps:, external Best football export must be Chris Waddle - his name is still sung at Marseille.
