Still the inspection goes on at Weston, where referee Tim Robinson is getting one of the FA Cup's special fluorescent pink balls all muddy by throwing it into one of the goalmouths. While this is going on, both sets of players are going through their warm-up routines.

  5. All aboard the West Ham buspublished at 14:19 Greenwich Mean Time 8 November 2014

West Ham United may not be joining the FA Cup until the third round, but they will still have a hand in this year's first round.

As Sam Allardyce's men are at home to Aston Villa in the Premier League today, Ryman Premier side East Thurrock United have used the Hammers' usual coach for away games for their near-600-mile round trip to Hartlepool.

The Rocks have only reached the first round once before, when they were beaten at home by then-League Two Macclesfield in 2011.

"It's a little bit of luxury - that's where some of the money is going to go," manager John Coventry told BBC Essex. "We're trying to give our players an experience like they were a pro player just for this weekend."

We are watching referee Tim Robinson conduct his pitch inspection as we speak, and it isn't looking great from here. He just tried to turn in an affected area of the penalty box and dug a huge hole in the pitch.

  9. Can AFC Fylde leave Plymouth feeling green?published at 14:10 Greenwich Mean Time 8 November 2014

Dorchester Town v Plymouth ArgyleImage source, Getty Images

Plymouth Argyle supporters will need no reminding about the perils of facing non-league opposition in the early rounds of the FA Cup.

The Devon side, who famously reached the semi-finals in 1984 as a third-tier club, were drawn against Dorchester Town of the Conference South in the first round two years ago.

Plymouth had a man sent off inside the first 10 minutes and Dorchester went on to win the tie 1-0. To make matters worse, their only goal was scored by Jake Gosling, who had been on Plymouth's books as a youngster.

The Pilgrims suffered a similar fate a year earlier against Southern Premier side Stourbridge. They had Paul Bignot sent off in the first half and lost 2-0.

AFC Fylde, second in the Conference North, have made the long trip from Lancashire to Home Park today.

The FA Cup is a stage for characters, and few are more colourful than Barnet manager Martin Allen.

The Bees are nine points clear at the top of the Conference and they welcome League Two leaders Wycombe Wanderers to The Hive this afternoon.

Allen took Brentford, then a third-tier club, to the fifth round of the competition in successive seasons between 2004 and 2006.

Bristol City are the giants of this season's FA Cup. Well, at least until the Premier League and Championship clubs enter in the third round.

Steve Cotterill's side are the runaway leaders of League One, scoring an average of more than two goals per game, and are unbeaten in 22 league matches, a run that stretches back to March.

    Good luck, Gillingham.

Sadly we have lost Mansfield Town v Concord Rangers to the weather, but 26 first-round ties remain.

  17. The maths behind an FA Cup free-kickpublished at 13:51 Greenwich Mean Time 8 November 2014

    BBC iWonder - Stuart Pearce's free-kick

The FA Cup has seen some glorious free-kicks over the years - Nottingham Forest captain Stuart Pearce's 1991 belter against Spurs, Chelsea star Didier Drogba's winning dipper in the 2010 final, and Everton legend Kevin Sheedy's incredible twice-in-a-row effort against Ipswich in 1985, to name just a few.

Many seem to defy logic, but can maths actually help explain how they were scored?

Nice touch - although there is a bit of the Leaning Tower of Pisa about the inflatable FA Cup. Bromley, fourth in the Conference South, host Kent neighbours Dartford, 21st in the Conference, in one of today's three all non-league ties.
