Sammy Ameobi running at Glen Johnson, something has to give - and it's the young winger who comes out on top. He toasts Johnson for pace and then delivers a fine ball in to the near post too, Liverpool just about scrambling the ball clear. Corner to Newcastle. Panic stations in the Liverpool backline?

Dejan Lovren is commanding for once, heading clear under pressure.

"Liverpool are looking the better side I would say so far. They have had most of the ball and they have passed it well, albeit most of the time close to the centre-circle and in their own half. But they have made the more confident start certainly."

Steven Gerrard's late runs into the penalty area are a much rarer sight than they used to be, but he still has the ability to pop up to good effect. He makes the dart into space here, is found by a dinked cross, but his nod down is not read by Mario Balotelli, who then fouls Jack Colback with a silly late challenge.

Liverpool seeing much more of the ball now.

Hugo Lloris - an oversight? Quite possibly...

Back at St James' Park, the home fans are still murmuring about that penalty shout. Steven Gerrard looks to dictate the play in midfield as Liverpool try and get into the game.

Tom in Leicester: Re your vote - think Hugo Lloris would have something to say about today's vote. Surely he's in top three? In my opinion better than all three on the list.

Vish in Ilford: Why is Lloris not in the vote for best goalkeeper - miles better than David De Gea and Joe Hart. I would go as far as to say best in the Premier League.

Vincent in Bedford: No mention of Lloris for best goalie! Shocking!

"We weren't in the best position but I thought Joe Allen came in from behind, and if he has then it is a foul. But the assistant referee did not lift his flag. I looked to him immediately, and he was in the best position of all. That is what the referee was banking on. My instinct was the referee was going to give a penalty."

  9. PENALTY APPEALpublished at 12:56 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November 2014

    Penalty?! No!

Gabriel Obertan does his best Cristiano Ronaldo impression, skinning two men easily for pace down the right before cutting back to Moussa Sissoko, who goes to ground under a challenge from Joe Allen. Referee Andre Marriner is the centre of attention but turns his back with disdain. No decision, much to the dismay of 50,000 or so Geordies...

Matt Harding:, external Brendan Rodgers said Fabio Borini was excellent mid-week so drops him today. What's that all about? Poor man-management.

Anthony Amodeo:, external Five minutes after coming on against Swansea, Mario Balotelli and Borini linked up to score. Why doesn't Rodgers see: Balotelli needs a partner!

George Hawes-Gatt:, external Not one of those Liverpool players would get into the Man City or Chelsea team. Shows gulf of class between the sides without Luis Suarez.

And it is Newcastle who are attempting to force the issue early doors. Plenty of play in midfield, with Mehdi Abeid busy on the ball, but the hosts run out of ideas within shooting distance of Simon Mignolet's goal.

BBC Radio 5 live at St James' Park

"Both teams have started the season in similar fashion. There hasn't been an awful lot of goals but there is plenty of promise. Can they build on it?

"It will be interesting to see how Alan Pardew sets his team up to play against the pace of Raheem Sterling and Philippe Coutinho. Liverpool do miss Daniel Sturridge but they still have real pace. Newcastle could afford to sit back against Manchester City in midweek, but today, playing at home, they have to come out and force the issue."

36.9% opted for Manchester United's David De Gea with just 7.3% going for Manchester City and England goalkeeper Joe Hart.

    Thanks for voting.

  14. CLOSE!published at 12:50 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November 2014

Newcastle striker Papiss Cisse - who is averaging a goal every hour this season - has the first effort of the day but his sharp shot is well blocked by Martin Skrtel.

Liverpool look nervous defending corners, but they get this one away, before breaking with intent at the other end. Raheem Sterling is the ball carrier but can't find a man at the end of it. Lovely open start to the game.
