In it he writes: "In April, Liverpool fans crowded around the team bus at Anfield buzzing with anticipation for the Chelsea game. There was an almost euphoric sense that the long wait for a Premier League title was nearly over. The mood around the players' entrance will be very different going into this weekend's clash with Jose Mourinho's men.

"But let's be fair and sensible about Brendan Rodgers. No manager should have to go from being the most exciting young coach in the league six months ago to being told he does not know what he's doing today. Rodgers has shown a talent for calculation, and has been bold enough to take a gamble by leaving senior players out of the side to play Real Madrid."

As well as gaining some element of revenge for last season's defeat, there is another reason the clash with Chelsea is an important one for Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers.

The former Swansea manager made seven changes to his starting XI for the midweek Champions League trip to Real Madrid - a game the Reds lost 1-0 - meaning Rodgers will come under the microscope today, especially if his side loses to Chelsea.

Rodgers, though, believes his tactical decision has not put any extra pressure on him to get a result, saying in the Telegraph:, external "It doesn't raise the stakes for Saturday, not at all, Liverpool versus Chelsea is always a big game for a number of reasons.

"The only thing I showed the other night was the trust I have in the group of players. I never feared that if I played this team that we were going to end up losing seven or eight nil and what the consequence of that would be."

The last time Liverpool fans made their way to Anfield for the visit of Chelsea, it was with a spring in their step as their side appeared to be marching towards a first Premier League title.

The Reds sat at the top of the table, five points clear and with just three games remaining. But a 2-0 defeat to the Blues, coupled with a 3-3 draw against Crystal Palace allowed Manchester City to take control. The rest, as they say, is history.

Now they meet in very different circumstances. Chelsea are the unstoppable force at the top of the standings while Liverpool, who have won just two of their last seven league games, are down in seventh. Lose, and they will be 15 points behind Chelsea.

Make no mistake, this is a massive game for Brendan Rodgers.

  17. Revenge on the cards?published at 08:58 Greenwich Mean Time 8 November 2014

"This does not slip now" - Steven Gerrard, April 2014.

Barely a fortnight after uttering those words of encouragement to his team-mates following a victory over Manchester City, Liverpool captain Gerrard slipped at a crucial time against Chelsea, allowing Demba Ba to run through and score.

Liverpool's title challenge subsequently crumbled and six months on, the Reds - and Gerrard - face Chelsea again.

Can the desire for revenge spur them on to become the first side this season to beat Jose Mourinho's men?
