Mario Balotelli steers in a wonderful low finish - but he's offside. Good play from Philippe Coutinho in the build up.

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer at Anfield

"Liverpool will be desperately disappointed to concede so soon after going ahead. Emre Can's goal provided just the lift they needed but an instant response from Chelsea.

"Emre Can has been prominent for Liverpool early on, helped by an uncharacteristic offering of space from Chelsea, which led to his goal.

"Steven Gerrard's name getting plenty of attention from both sets of supporters - a leftover from his slip in Chelsea's win here last April that helped to deprive Liverpool of the title."

Chelsea fans react to that goal by singing songs about Steven Gerrard. Not especially nice ones either.

Great start to a big game. It's as open as you like.

"It is over the line - we've seen it on the replay. At first I thought the linesman would have been really brave to award that one. But the Liverpool marking was woeful. It was a shocking goal to give away at this level of football. Who is marking who? The Chelsea players were queuing up to put it in. Liverpool had been struggling to live with Chelsea since they took the lead."

  5. GOALpublished at 13:00 Greenwich Mean Time 8 November 2014

Derby forward Johnny Russell makes it 3-0, and it was more poor defending from Wolves. Kenny Jackett's side were all over the place as Russell ghosted in from the edge of the area, after the visitors had failed to clear the initial corner and he fired into the corner from 12 yards. Game over?

Goal-line technology to Chelsea's rescue! They were on the end of a contentious call at the Kop end in 2005 - think Luis Garcia - but this time it gives them parity!

Diego Costa flicks on a corner, John Terry's header is brilliantly saved by Simon Mignolet, but Gary Cahill reacts well to slam in a shot. Mignolet grabs it - but the ball was an inch or so over the line.

In case you did back it [See 12:38]...20-1 shot Gerrard's Slip did not figure among the places in the 12.40 at Doncaster, never really threatening the leaders and finishing a distant 11th out of 13 runners.

Liverpool fans will hope that is not a signal...

"Liverpool have started brightly and have looked the better team, although it is still early. But Emre Can has looked particularly strong going forward. Yes there was a little bit of good fortune about the goal, but you have to have a go. There was no chance for Thibaut Courtois. He was sent the wrong way by the deflection."

"The fields of Anfield Road" booms out from a packed Kop. Chelsea, don't forget, are unbeaten this season. Jose Mourinho looked particularly cheesed off about that goal. Slack defending again.

Chelsea don't learn their lesson! Emre Can had gone close with a first-minute effort and opens his Liverpool account with another long-range drive, he's not closed down, the shot hits the shoulder of Gary Cahill, and loops into the net.

    Liverpool rocking.

Letting Nemanja Matic leave Chelsea a few years ago was, in hindsight, a terrible decision. Like Decca not signing the Beatles.

But at least the Blues rectified their decision, he's been brilliant since he returned.

"This is not the Liverpool of last season - they are sitting deep behind the ball when Chelsea are in possession. It's been a good start from the home side though. Straight from kick-off there were big gaps in midfield, which you do not often see with Chelsea. I thought Emre Can's deflected shot (see 1 min) was going to nestle in the top corner."

The much-maligned Mario Balotelli offers his first moment of danger, spinning in behind John Terry to meet martin Skrtel's clip over the top - but he's just offside. Good movement though from the Italian enigma.

"The problem for Brendan Rodgers is that he's put more pressure on himself for today's game considering his midweek Champions League selection. It's today's game on which Rodgers will be judged. For Liverpool, Daniel Sturridge has hardly been fit and they've lost a world-class player in Luis Suarez, who only now are we really realising how great he was. And Mario Balotelli, for me, simply doesn't work hard enough.

"Any weaknesses for Chelsea? Absolutely not. They made money in the transfer market but they've ended up with a stronger side - how impressive is that? Plus, they're the strongest side mentally in the division."

  16. Postpublished at 12:48 Greenwich Mean Time 8 November 2014

Liverpool starting with the early intensity and tempo which was their trademark last season. Can they hit Chelsea early, and hit them hard? Steven Gerrard whips in a dangerous delivery but Thibaut Courtois is commander of all he surveys.

  17. GOALpublished at 12:46 Greenwich Mean Time 8 November 2014

Derby midfielder Jeff Hendrick's long-range shot fizzes off the surface into the back of the net from 25 yards. It was sloppy from Wolves' point of view, and it's a long way back for Kenny Jackett's side now.

  18. CLOSE!published at 12:46 Greenwich Mean Time 8 November 2014

Emre Can, built like a cruiserweight, moves through midfield and gets a shot away, it deflects off John Terry - and just wide!

Former Blackburn Rovers striker Jason Roberts

"Tuning in to a match between two clubs of the stature of Real Madrid and Liverpool on Tuesday, the fact that Brendan Rodgers left out so many big names did not ring true and that was a problem for me.

"Up front they have problems but Mario Balotelli is not the same type of player as Luis Suarez or Daniel Sturridge. Chasing the attack is not his game. And if he is going to be up there on his own you have to provide the chances for him. Meanwhile, Chelsea are looking formidable, both in defence and attack. When they are on form I do not see who can deal with them."
