Space opens up for Henrik Ojamaa to dart forward and set his sights but the Motherwell forward slices his long-range effort skews way wide of the target.
Conor Townsend gets forward again and topples to the turf as Mark O'Brien blocks his route to goal. There are a few cries for a penalty from the band of travelling supporters but the player just picks himself up without any fuss.
United continue to ping the ball around at pace and the Motherwell defence is starting to creak. Defender Conor Townsend pops up in the penalty box but doesn't quite catch his shot and it's blocked by an opponent in claret and amber.
Blair Spittal cuts in from the left to have a pop and his curling strike from the edge of the area cannons off the chest of Aidan Connolly (in an offside position), forcing a good save from Motherwell custodian Dan Twardzik.
It's beginning to look like he will be the busier of the two goalkeepers.
Chris Erskine sends Ryan Dow scampering forward with a raking pass but the Dundee United forward takes a heavy first touch, allowing Stephen McManus to get back and make a good sliding block on the angle of the six-yard box.
Mark O'Brien is the first man to be cautioned as the on-loan 'Well defender clatters into Paul Paton in the middle of the park.
Iain Vigurs floats a free-kick into the Dundee United penalty box but it's a Dundee United head that gets to it in a congested spot.
Aidan Connolly lines up the free-kick from 20 yards only to balloon it high over the crossbar...
Aidan Connolly nips in behind the home defence and gets there before Motherwell keeper Dan Twardzik. However, he takes the ball very wide and is on the byline before delivering a cross into the mixer. The ball is cleared as far as Chris Erskine on the edge of the box and he is felled by a slipping Keith Lasley.
Motherwell winger Lionel Ainsworth speeds down the right flank to fizz in a low cross and Jon Souttar does well to clear while facing his own goal.
The United forwards are buzzing around in enemy territory, popping up here and there, but haven't yet got behind the home side.

Well, Stuart I think you've just done it...
The early signs are that Paul Paton is filling in at right-back for United rather than patrolling the middle with John Rankin.
And it looks like a back four for Motherwell, with Craig Reid in the left-back area.
Dundee United, wearing black, get the game started.
There's a nice "thanks for the memories" banner dedicated to Stuart McCall on display from the home fans. There will be a Remembrance minute's silence then we'll be up and running...

United beat Motherwell at Tannadice in August thanks to a solitary late goal from Mario Bilate. The Terrors were also unbeaten in this fixture last season, which included a 4-0 win on their only visit to Fir Park.
You have to go back to April 2011 for Motherwell's last home success against tonight's opponents.
Stuart McCall worked wonders on a limited budget at Fir Park, steering the Lanarkshire club to third place then back-to-back runners-up finishes in the top flight over the last three seasons. However, it has all unravelled this term with just two wins from 12.
The former Everton and Rangers midfielder told BBC Scotland he was worried that he had "lost a bit of that hunger and desire".
Apologies to all Hamilton Accies who are choking on their tea after BBC Radio Scotland's Tom English suggests Alex Neil would be a good fit for Motherwell. They wouldn't dare, would they?
Who would Motherwell fans like to see replace Stuart McCall? Derek Adams has been strongly linked and Winston Bogarde is up for it. Would you take Billy Davies back or will the cash-strapped club promote from within?
