Freddy Harper-Davis: Why has Brendan Rodgers dropped Simon Mignolet? Odd decision, was solid against Basel.

Amarpreet: Baffled by people saying Mignolet had a good game against Basel? His indecisiveness with kicking led to most of their chances.

Ken Gorry: Manchester United's weakness is their defence and we're playing without a striker. Is Brendan Rodgers a tactical genius? Or has he lost the plot?

Sunday league stuff today? I've not seen anyone be sick on the edge of the pitch yet. Or get changed in the boot of a car...

  4. Uncertainty holding Villa back?published at 13:06 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2014

Aston Villa goalkeeper Shay Given: "We lost Kieran Richardson to a red card after 20 minutes - he rushed into the challenge and there is always a danger of being punished for that. But we still had a couple of half chances, and had we sneaked the draw it would have been six games unbeaten. So hopefully it's just a bit of a setback and we can recover. Christian Benteke, the ball was bouncing off him a bit yesterday, it wasn't one of his best games. He is a big player and on his day he would have taken that chance at the end - when he is right on song, he is one of the very best."

Sports writer Ollie Holt: "I think there's a real disparity between the funds Aston Villa have and the expectation of the fans. Paul Lambert is a good manger, but he has not got the resources he needs and there is uncertainty around the club. I don't see why they shouldn't be challenging for Europe, but in better financial circumstances."

West Brom midfielder Craig Gardner scored against former club Aston Villa to end the Baggies' run of five Premier League matches without a win on Saturday.

That's another injury in defence for Manchester United then. What are they doing to each other in training?

  6. 'From trouble to heaven'published at 13:03 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2014

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal: "My plan you shall see on the pitch. I have to change at the last moment because Marcos Rojo was injured in training so I have to change my line-up again.

"Radamel Falcao is fit to start. We need James Wilson in this match because of his speed. Liverpool are now in trouble but by beating us they can be in heaven. That is football."

    Mario Balotelli...sub. Lazar Markovic...sub. Brad Jones...oh wait...starts.

The goalkeeper may have his shirt hung up next to two of Liverpool's bench at Old Trafford but he is very much in the starting line-up for the visitors.

BBC Sport chief football writer Phil McNulty at Old Trafford

"Radamel Falcao once again on the bench for Manchester United, with manager Louis van Gaal showing a preference for the greater speed of youngster James Wilson. United's investment in the brilliant, but injury-troubled, Colombian has not been a success to date.

"Just the odd cheer or two from Liverpool's fans when the news of goalkeeper Simon Mignolet's exclusion was announced."

Frank Lampard's influence continues to have an impact on the title race it seems. Would he get a game for either of today's two sides?

  10. "City would be crazy to let Lampard go"published at 12:56 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2014

Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson: "Frank Lampard is already so important for Manchester City. When he walked away from Chelsea Jose Mourinho said good luck to him, in other words good luck to Man City - they have taken the chance on him and it is a great piece of business. Such a top professional."

Sports writer Ollie Holt: "It's a fantastic record - 175 Premier League goals, the same as Thierry Henry, for a midfielder. Lampard is an experienced professional. He is going to be a help for the younger players, but you can also see he is still capable of making a real contribution to the team - he is not just some trophy player. He will be invaluable as the season goes on. I don't' know how New York City will feel about him possibly staying at Manchester City longer, but I should think City's interests will come first."

Aston Villa goalkeeper Shay Given: "I don't think that record will ever be passed by a midfielder. City would be crazy to let him go back in January."

Jamie McKee:, external Terrible starting 11 by Liverpool, dreaming of the days when we had the class of Biscan, Djimi Traore and Cheyrou in the team!

Fabio Borini is quite clearly not in Brendan Rodgers' plans. At all.

An interesting team selection up front for United too, with Louis van Gaal preferring the youth of James Wilson over the experience of Radamel Falcao.

Tom Wylie:, external Why not start Balotelli, the United fans would be on his back from the start and he would work extra hard to quiet them!

Martin Thetford:, external Mignolet had a decent game against Basel, why drop him? Glad to see Lallana and Coutinho but I would've picked Lucas over Allen.

Peter Campbell:, external What does Borini have to do to get a game? Or at least a place on the bench? Did he not prove himself at Sunderland?

Liverpool may not have an out-and-out striker on the pitch, but you have to say there are a lot of attacking players on display this afternoon. If we don't get goals with those two teams, we may as well give up and go home...

Liverpool goalkeepers Simon Mignolet and Brad Jones go through their warm-ups at the Stretford End. Jones is a 32-year-old Australian with plenty of experience - but not too many games of this stature under his belt.

He has made just seven Premier League starts for Liverpool. The biggest game of his career to date?

Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson: "The big games are what it's about, what you want to play in.

"This is a good opportunity for us to put in a good performance and get a good result. Form doesn't come into it, we will give everything."

  18. 'Diving a blight on our game'published at 12:44 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2014

    MOTD2 Extra

Aston Villa goalkeeper Shay Given: "A few years ago, we'd say it was the foreigners bringing it into our game, but yesterday it was a 6ft 4ins English centre-half Gary Cahill. I've never come across a manager who told us to dive, but managers have said if you get hit in the box to go over. Is that a dive? I don't know. If a panel could get together after a game and debate whether certain incidents were a dive, red card etc, I think that would help stop it."

Sports writer Ollie Holt: "I'm fed up of it, I hate diving. Most managers condemn it when it's the other team and look past it when it's their team. Until that changes, the issue won't change. The media feels strongly about it and fans of clubs dislike their own players doing it. The will is there to stamp it out but there's been enough talk, we need to bring in retrospective punishment."

Ex-Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson: "We're in trouble when Gary Cahill is diving. He'll be embarrassed. It's a blight on our game. It needs managers to lose players to suspension and then it will stop."

  19. Postpublished at 12:44 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2014

Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney: "They are great games if you win! It's a big game for both teams and we are looking forward to it. Both teams want the three points, we are going in on the back of five straight wins while Liverpool had the disappointment of going out of the Champions League.

"But I don't think that means anything today. It's one of the biggest games in English football. They beat us last season so it will be great to beat them today."

From Mo, Manchester: Rodgers has absolutely lost the plot, we can't score goals so let's play no striker. What does Emre Can have to do to start?? Allen and Henderson are useless! Absolutely fuming, someone take this manager away.

Tally in Liverpool: No striker again? It didn't work against Basel at Anfield, yet Mr Brendan thinks it will work against United at Old Trafford, great logic! Tactic to lob aimless crosses into the big man Sterling?

Scott in Birkenhead: Dropping Mignolet will not solve the defensive frailties that have been exposed this season due to the lack of firepower upfront, bad call by Rodgers
