Brilliant pass from Steven Gerrard! Lazers through the Manchester United defence to find Alberto Moreno on the diagonal, a good touch and he's in on goal but it's a duff one and Antonio Valencia is able to track him and tackle. The pass was outstanding though.

BBC Sport chief football writer Phil McNulty

"Manchester United may be ahead but there is still room for optimism for Liverpool. Raheem Sterling's pace is causing all sorts of problems - even if his finishing isn't - and with Phil Jones already on a yellow card he will surely put further pressure on him.

"Meanwhile, in Manchester United's midfield Marouane Fellaini is having the perfect storm of terrible first touches and misplaced passes - as well as also being on a yellow card."

"I'd take Marouane Felliani off now before he gets a red!"

  4. YELLOW CARDpublished at 13:59 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2014

Joe Allen - who was nutmegged in the build-up to the goal by Antonio Valencia - doesn't want a repeat so bodychecks the winger instead and is booked.

  5. Postpublished at 13:58 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2014

Liverpool continue to look the better side in possession. Once more they get Raheem Sterling in behind, but this time Phil Jones does enough to see him out. The decision to start Sterling up front does have some merit. He looks a threat.

So everyone is rubbish, in summary?

From Andy: Marouane Fellaini shouldn't be playing in midfield for Manchester United against any top teams. He has no composure on the ball and wastes possession far too easily. He'a red card waiting to happen today up against the likes of Lallana and Sterling.

Ade: Amongst the plethora of under performing stars, it's going un noticed how much a disastrous season Jordan Henderson is having after last years progress. He has been terrible.

From John: Coutinho has been awful so far this afternoon, can't pass and won't track back. Not good enough at this level and in a game of this importance.

From Mo, Manchester: What does Rodgers expect, no striker and the worlds worst finisher in Sterling. How many games does he cost us? Remember Basel away.

Glen Johnson has picked up an injury, so Kolo Toure is on in his place at the right of three centre-backs. Early change for the visitors.

"Raheem Sterling has to score. I would have had a hat-trick by now - with just the two chances! Liverpool have been so careless in possession. When you are 1-0 down, and have to work so hard to earn the ball, you have to be better with your passing when you do have it. Liverpool have worked themselves into decent positions, but their final pass has been poor."

  10. GREAT SAVE!published at 13:54 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2014

Raheem Sterling weaves through the United defence again, lovely feet from the forward but once more David de Gea is imperious to stop his left-footed effort. Much better connection that time from Sterling - that is a good save.

Paul Walmsley: People criticising the Raheem Sterling chance (see 12 mins) need to remember he isn't a striker by trade.

Doug McMahon: If you do not have a natural finisher up front, you simply will not win these big games. Liverpool should be 1-0 up. Instead they are 1-0 down.

Isaac Wolofar: David De Gea is getting almost impossible to beat. For me he's up there with Sergio Aguero and Eden Hazard as the leagues best players.

  12. YELLOW CARDpublished at 13:51 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2014

A strangled chant of 'you're getting sacked in the morning!' is heard at Old Trafford. Brendan Rodgers feeling the pressure? His side remain the better on the ball, Phil Jones going in the book for a laboured tackle on Philippe Coutinho.

  13. Postpublished at 13:50 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2014

Manchester United have scored with their only effort so far; they scored both of their shots on target at Southampton and had one shot on target and Arsenal - and won 2-1.

They may not be playing well, still, but you have to admire their poise in front of goal.

Thomas Fiorilli: In the Paul Scholes role, Wayne Rooney comes up with a Scholes-like finish!

Brian Dunleavy: If you ever need a definition of comical defending, just put a video of the build-up to Rooney's goal (see 13 mins) on a loop.

Jonathan Marshall: Someone send Raheem Sterling (see 12 mins) to finishing school!

Liverpool still moving the ball around nicely. Raheem Sterling comes out to the left but he has four team-mates waiting in the penalty area. He rolls the ball back to skipper Steven Gerrard, whose 25-yard effort is deflected on its way through to David de Gea.

  16. Postpublished at 13:47 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2014

Chief football writer Phil McNulty at Old Trafford

"Manchester United's goal, superbly created and finished by Antonio Valencia and Wayne Rooney, actually came just as Old Trafford was starting to show the first signs of impatience as Liverpool's intense pressing was forcing the home side into mistakes.

"Liverpool had started well but once again United were thankful for David de Gea for his crucial block from Raheem Sterling. The momentum has shifted crucially."

  17. Postpublished at 13:46 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2014

    Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson
    BBC Radio 5 live

"If you suddenly decide to play three at the back, then all the three central defenders think there is safety in numbers, and nobody takes responsibility to cover at times. But minutes ago Raheem Sterling should have scored (see 12 mins) - Liverpool should have been 1-0 up."

  18. Postpublished at 13:46 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2014

The problem with starting with no out-and-out striker is that as soon as you fall behind, your tactics start to be questioned. How can Liverpool get back into this game now? There were 25 seconds between Raheem Sterling's great chance and Wayne Rooney hitting the back of the net.

  19. Postpublished at 13:44 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2014

Not playing well but winning. The new Manchester United habit.

    Alan Shearer
    BBC Sport

"There was no pressure on the cross at all. It was far too easy for Manchester United. It's as if the Liverpool defence just said: 'Go ahead and cross it.' And there was nobody around Wayne Rooney marking him either."
