How did we start a Troy Deeney debate here? As I recall some Premier League clubs were interested in him in the summer but were quoted around £10m. That's why clubs tend to look elsewhere...

Beth, Tottenham: I'd totally go for Troy Deeney (see 19 mins). That kid knows where the goal is! The wider picture here though is it just me or have Premier League clubs stopped raiding the lower leagues for players (and managers) in recent years? Sad to see, so much untapped talent languishing down there...

Dog, Watford fan: Dear Beth of 19 minutes. Troy Deeney is truly awful, lacks passion, consistency and goals. You'd hate him at Spurs... Take Britt instead...

  3. HALF-TIMEpublished at 16:47 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2014

Spurs lead at the break, but a decent showing from Swansea too. All poised.

You wouldn't think to class Erik Lamela as a hardman but he is involved in another moody tussle on the sidelines as we enter stoppage time at the end of a very watchable first half.

"Wilfried Bony is just having an off day isn't he? Again he didn't catch it right whereas normally from there he is such a good striker of the ball. He is normally so clinical in those areas. Swansea should be in front, certainly on chances created. They've edged the possession too."

Great play! Gylfi Sigurdsson digs out a lovely return pass to free Angel Rangel on the right. He gets his head up and picks out Wilfried Bony, he goes for placement rather than power and the ball squirrels away off Federico Fazio and away for a corner. Fine move, fine chance. Not the finest finish.

Jay: Jan Vertonghen had both studs up. Tottenham should be two players down. Looks like Garry Monk will be preparing another video package.

Cameron Laws: Poor refereeing to book Verthongen (see 34 mins). Football is embarrassingly soft these days.

John Pierce: The referee has missed a second yellow for Kyle Walker, a red for Erik Lamela, and maybe a red for Jan Vertonghen. Lenient?

  8. YELLOW CARDpublished at 16:41 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2014

Maybe that pitch is causing a few problems as Harry Kane goes to ground inside the area. A dive? I think he lost his footing.

Ryan Mason is booked for sweeping the legs of Leon Britton away.

May I commend the Liberty Stadium on its excellent drainage. The pitch is clearly absolutely sodden, with each step or pass kicking up surface water, but the pitch is clearing enough to keep the ball running nicely. Well done.

"For me a yellow card for Jan Vertonghen is the right decision (see 34 mins), but a lot of referees might have given a red there - especially with the fan noise and pressure from the stands. Credit to the referee. It looked as though Vertonghen made initial contact and then his studs came up after he'd won the ball. Tottenham are inviting Swansea on to them now, and Swansea will eventually take one of their chances if Spurs continue to sit back."

  11. Postpublished at 16:36 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2014

On another day Tottenham could perhaps have been shown at least one red card in the last few minutes. As it is we are still blessed with all 22 men on the pitch. Can Swansea level this up before the break?

  12. YELLOW CARDpublished at 16:34 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2014

The wet weather is leaving the pitch very slick, and Jan Vertnoghen goes into the book for sliding into Wayne Routledge. Ugly looking challenge as it's a bit two-footed, but Vertonghen does win the ball. Yellow card it is.

"I'm not sure if Erik Lamela means that, but his arm definitely came across and caught Jefferson Montero. Both officials missed the incident though. Tottenham have kept the ball very well, but also when they have given it away players have been sprinting to close Swansea down. That's great to see. We know these players have ability but can they do the other side of the game well?"

  14. Postpublished at 16:31 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2014

The rain continues to bucket down, and the hosts continue to look dangerous. Playing with real width in Jefferson Montero and Wayne Routledge.

Erik Lamela leaves Montero in a heap after handing him off on the turn. Lamela sticks out his arm to fend off the Swans winger. No card given. It was more vicious than Lazar Markovic's red card at Anfield last week, put it that way.

  15. Postpublished at 16:29 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2014

Wilfried Bony is in behind again, but his first touch lets him down on this occasion. A Swansea goal looks well and truly on the cards.

"It was a great ball in from Angel Rangel and looking at it Wilfried Bony was in line with the last defender, but Hugo Lloris made a great save with his feet, it's fantastic. Bony may well feel he should have scored but the assistant referee had his flag up for offside anyway."

Wilfried Bony causing absolute havoc in the Spurs defence. He's flagged offside as he jostles for another early cross in but his movement is top class. There must be some big clubs eyeing a move for him in January. He'll be top dollar, but there aren't too many strikers who can play up front on his own in the Premier League like he can.

Edward Herbert: Not sure what to make of Spurs going 1-0 up so early. Not used to this.

  19. PENALTY APPEALpublished at 16:24 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2014

Swansea playing really well now. Wayne Routledge puts over an early cross which has the Spurs defence at sixes and sevens, it fizzes into the corridor and Wilfried Bony almost gambles on it.

Seconds later Gylfi Sigurdsson is caught by Federico Fazio as they go for a ball - is that a penalty? Nothing doing by referee Robert Madley.

"That is a brilliant tackle from Ben Davies. Outstanding - he has saved his team a goal. Wilfried Bony was an absolutely certainty to score. Davies had to be so careful as well. Bony was sizing up the goal but Davies came in from the side and timed his tackle perfectly."
