"Radamel Falcao, what a great time it is for him to come on. Liverpool are leaving gaps in defence left right and centre. He can smell goals."

David McQueen: Brendan Rodgers should be axed purely for Dejan Lovren. Worst defender ever,

David Mackay: Think Rodgers' days are numbered now.

Saidmadrid: The score doesn't reflect what has happened on the pitch. David De Gea man of the match.

Here comes Radamel Falcao - and Wayne Rooney gets 15 minutes off. Midfield enforcer, goalscorer today. He gets a huge ovation.

  5. Postpublished at 15:03 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2014

Nine months ago, Liverpool were dominant in a 3-0 win at Old Trafford. Today they are staring at a 3-0 defeat - but United have hardly been dominant. What they have got is a wonderful knack of scoring every chance they create.

  6. Scottish football latestpublished at 15:02 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2014

Celtic complete a convincing 4-1 win over St Mirren to stretch their lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership to six points ahead of Inverness Caledonian Thistle, who suffered a shock 4-0 defeat at home to Partick Thistle yesterday. Captain Scott Brown scored a double as St Mirren suffered defeat in their first game under caretaker manager Gary Teale and the Paisley side end the weekend a point behind Ross County, who drew with Motherwell yesterday, at the bottom of the table.

    Former England captain Alan Shearer
    BBC Radio 5 live

"That is what happens when you don't take your chances. Trying to push forward, Liverpool left three on three at the back. And then it is Wayne Rooney, Juan Mata and Robin van Persie against Liverpool's back three - that spells trouble. Van Persie had a bit of help in the goal from Dejan Lovren's poor clearance, but there was no suggestion of offside this time. A lovely pass to find him from Juan Mata."

  8. YELLOW CARDpublished at 15:01 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2014

What was he doing there, Dejan Lovren? So much time, so much time. So little composure.

Mario Balotelli is booked. That has been coming too.

Horrible, horrible defending! Dear oh dear. Wayne Rooney plays the ball across, Dejan Lovren has all the time in the North West to clear his lines but instead scuffs a panicked clearance straight to the feet of Juan Mata. Mata has time to look up and slide a pass to his right where Robin van Persie is free, onside and with an open goal. He does not miss.

  12. Postpublished at 14:57 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2014

David de Gea has already made six saves in this game; he has only ever managed more once at Old Trafford in the Premier League (nine v Tottenham in August 2011).

    Into the last 20 minutes.

  13. Postpublished at 14:56 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2014

    Former England captain Alan Shearer
    BBC Radio 5 live

"Once again Liverpool got in behind the Manchester United back three, Raheem Sterling picked out Mario Balotelli, but De Gea makes an outstanding save. Another big opportunity missed for Liverpool. The away side have had the majority of possession in this half, they are pressing really high and are not letting Manchester United out. But on the one occasion United did manage to build something, Robin van Persie should have scored."

On comes Lazar Markovic for Alberto Moreno.

Good claim from Brad Jones, he's had a good game back in the Liverpool goal. But he's not in this man's class!

What a save from David de Gea! Raheem Sterling picks out Mario Balotelli, 12 yards out, he smashes in a shot and De Gea turns it onto the crossbar. Wonderful goalkeeping.

Ash: Not sure if he's lacking confidence, mind is elsewhere or just hasn't got his shooting boots on, but Raheem Sterling should've had four by now.

Conor McMeekin: Mario Balotelli has to be up there with the worst striker in the league. All he does is shoot any time he gets the ball, awful!

Bruce Ha: Since he got cautioned, every time Marouane Fellaini gets close to the ball it make me nervous. Louis van Gaal please do something!

Chief football writer Phil McNulty at Old Trafford

"Liverpool again acquitting themselves well at the start of the second half but sympathy for their plight has to be in short supply when they (or to be specific, Raheem Sterling) have wasted such great chances. Radamel Falcao has been given a rousing reception by the Stretford End and seems certain to be introduced shortly."

Proof that Manchester United can miss a chance! Antonio Valencia is again the creator on the right, really looking back to something like his best as he flashes in a low cross, Robin van Persie has a clear sighter six yards out - but slices it wide. Should be three.

Liverpool keep the ball well, moving to the edge of the United penalty area before checking out and coming all the way back into their own half. And then repeat. If you won points for successive passes Brendan Rodgers' side would be in business.

  20. Text us on 81111published at 14:47 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2014

Bill, Hereford: Raheem Sterling isn't happy because he's not being offered enough money? Needs to learn how to score when he's got an open goal before he thinks he's worth more money.

Alistair: Oh for Daniel Sturridge in Sterling's role today.

Peter: Louis van Gaal has taken Manchester United back to where Sir Alex Ferguson had them in 2012-13. Not much possession but ruthless counters.
