Mario Balotelli is out warming up at Old Trafford. Well that's pushing it. He's doing some tentative stretches and a jog. He must be cold Mario, he's wearing several layers and some massive gloves.

Could he come on and spark a revival? He's had success on this ground before.

Six wins in a row then for Manchester United? Imagine what they can do when they start playing well...

Queens Park Rangers defender Rio Ferdinand

"Offside, but two bits of wing-play has made the difference. Get a yard or two and put the ball in the danger area to be dispatched!"

Harry Siviter: I wonder if we're going to see Brendan Rodgers get angry in his post-match interview. Juan Mata was easily offside.

Samuel Skubala: Liverpool's defence fell asleep for Mata's goal - even if it is offside. A tough mountain for Liverpool to climb now.

Dominic O'Caollai: Liverpool have played well so far. Difference is Manchester United have finished their chances. Typical of both teams' seasons. Even if they are playing poorly.

Chief football writer Phil McNulty at Old Trafford

"Liverpool will feel aggrieved about that contentious second goal but Raheem Sterling has wasted chances while Manchester United have taken theirs. United ruthless but Liverpool toothless. Big test for manager Brendan Rodgers and his players now."

  6. Postpublished at 14:18 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2014

Raheem Sterling slumps to his knees. Liverpool have looked the better side but were poor in both penalty areas, while United are clinical in front of goal at the moment. Can Liverpool mount a comeback? Don't bet on it.

John: Juan Mata is only two yards offside so that's alright then...

Joe Creaser: Big call, he was offside Mata. Linesman must have thought Robin van Persie didn't make contact.

Paul Humphreys: How on earth are we 2-0 up!? So happy we're playing a team defending as badly as us!

Liverpool win a corner as we tick into stoppage time - worryingly for them though Raheem Sterling is nursing a knock.

Another booking as Wayne Rooney charges into Philippe Coutinho. A red card looks likely in this game, could that be Liverpool's best chance of a comeback today?

  11. Scottish football latestpublished at 14:13 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2014

Celtic had some nervous moments early on after St Mirren's Sean Kelly cancelled out Scott Brown's opener. However, the Scottish champions are well on the way to extending their Scottish Premiership lead to six points after further goals from James Forrest and Brown. It is not proving to be a good first game for Gary Teale, who took over last week as caretaker manager following the sacking of Tommy Craig.

    Former England captain Alan Shearer

"Juan Mata is standing a yard or two offside. That goal should be disallowed. But Alberto Moreno, who was marking Mata, did not know where he was anyway. It is a tough job to be an assistant referee, but that is not a difficult decision. He's got that terribly wrong."

  13. Postpublished at 14:12 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2014

A poor decision, sure, but the defending from Liverpool was none too clever. Manchester United aren't playing well but they don't need to it seems. They score with every shot they take and are heading for a sixth straight league win.

At the other end Raheem Sterling again tests David de Gea. Again the keeper saves his header easily.

Two shots. Two goals. But Juan Mata is a mile offside! Ashley Yong's cross is flicked on by Robin van Persie, Mata is two yards behind the Liverpool defence and is free to stoop and head into the net from three yards out.

  15. Postpublished at 14:08 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2014

    Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson
    BBC Radio 5 live

"There have been three chances in the game. Liverpool had two and Manchester United have taken theirs. It's quite an open game though - going forward there is loads of space, and there is a frightening amount for Antonio Valencia on the right. But both teams are giving the ball away on a regular basis. When I watch Marouane Fellaini play, he just follows the ball - he is like a kid in the playground. But Michael Carrick is having an excellent game."

Wayne Rooney spreads a lovely pass out to Antonio Valencia, whose low cross is well claimed by Brad Jones. That will boost his confidence. The days of debating whether Rooney can play in midfield should be coming to an end too. He most certainly is.

"Liverpool are causing Manchester United problems going forward - Raheem Sterling has had two great chances and should have at least one goal - but they've got issues defensively. Antonio Valencia has been causing Alberto Moreno all kinds of problems on the Liverpool left."

  18. Text us on 81111published at 14:06 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2014

Rory from Bristol: Sterling looks exciting in attack, making good runs and taking on people. But critically he hasn't got the finish of a striker and that's a problem.

Richard M: If Sterling wants a bumper salary he needs to prove he has the head to put the ball in the net when it counts.

David, Warrington: Brendan Rodgers has modelled the defence on a Terrys chocolate orange. Looks good until one knock in the right place and it all falls apart.

Ryan Hamilton: Herrera should be on that pitch, tackles better than Fellaini, makes a nuisance of himself better than Fellaini and can assist better than Fellaini... All the encouragement needed for Fellaini to prove me wrong!

  19. YELLOW CARDpublished at 14:06 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2014

We expected goals in this game, but it's cards which are piling up. Every foul is a booking at the moment as Jonny Evans joins the list with a challenge on Phil Coutinho.

Queens Park Rangers defender Rio Ferdinand

"If Raheem Sterling or Philippe Couthino have anything about them they will go and stand near Phil Jones and play on him all game. Michael Carrick has got a major Cohiba, external out here! Class player full stop."
