  1. We must improve - Van Gaalpublished at 14:17 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2014

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal is asked if people are getting carried away with his side's six-game winning run: "The media. We are living match by match and preparing business against Aston Villa.

"I hope the preparation shall end in victory. I think we have to improve especially in ball possession because every match we gave the ball away too easily without pressure. That I call unnecessary.

"In the last matches we didn't receive any more stupid goals, so I'm pleased with our defence organisation but we must improve with ball possession."

Rajan Paudel: Exciting...Rooney, Falcao, RVP and Mata all in starting line up today. Eager to see how they link with each other

Jonathan Guckian: They said #MUFC couldn't fit Rooney, RVP, Mata & Falcao into one team. That's how it's done. Let's see if it works!

Manager Paul Lambert makes four changes to Aston Villa's defeat at West Brom as Matthew Lowton, Fabian Delph, Ron Vlaar and Andreas Weimann come in.

Manchester United make two changes as Radamel Falcao and Darren Fletcher replace James Wilson and Marouane Fellaini respectively but their hosts have been decimated by injuries and suspensions.

Manchester United's Ashley Young will face his old club, who have just one victory over their visitors today in 36 attempts. Make no mistake about it, this is a happy hunting ground for the Red Devils.

Aston Villa XI: Guzan, Lowton, Vlaar, Okore, Clark, Cissokho, Sanchez, Delph, Weimann, Agbonlahor, Benteke.

Manchester United XI: De Gea, Jones, Carrick, Evans, Valencia, Fletcher, Mata, Rooney, Young, Van Persie, Falcao.

I've no doubt we will Jimmy! The goal definitely should have stood. At the other end James Milner almost finds Frank Lampard but more good defending from Scott Dann cuts it out. Approaching the final 15 minutes.

"I just took the offside decision as matter of fact and looked at the assistant referee. But no doubt we will hear from the Palace manager about that. One goal and the whole thing changes."

I've just seen another replay of that disallowed Crystal Palace goal from a few minutes ago and it should have stood. Fernandinho was right down at the bottom of the screen and played James McArthur clearly onside. Unlucky for Palace.

"Before the game we were looking at the kind of players who could come and threaten from deep and David Silva has scored twice. It's a mean club that doesn't want him to take the ball home - of course they don't have the money here...

"I thought Palace might have left Fraizer Campbell on, I thought he did well. At the moment the signs are not very promising for the away team. They have not been able to get on the ball. Since half-time City have kept possession really well and there has been much better movement off the ball."

David Silva's reward for two goals is to get a 20-minute rest, as Frank Lampard replaces him. Standing ovation for the Spaniard, and a hearty welcome for Lampard too.

James McArthur heads in a Yannick Bolasie cross - but the flag is up. Very, very tight that one. City fans serenade the away end with 'you should have gone Christmas shopping.'

Even a defeat beats shopping, surely?

Louis Porter: So only a week ago LVG says Falcao is only fit for 20 minutes and now he is in the starting lineup. What?

  13. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 14:08 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2014

Manchester City have had 75% of possessing since half-time. Utterly dominant. But they have struggled in front of goal without a recognised striker, as you would expect.

Palace send on Wilfried Zaha, to some token boos thanks to his Manchester United ties.

Not many changes to tell you about at White Hart Lane. From the team which beat Swansea last weekend, Tottenham bring in Nacer Chadli in place of Roberto Soldado. Burnley are unchanged.

And there is the second goal! David Silva again, from a full-back's pass again. This is a fine goal, Aleksander Kolarov having time on the left to whip over a low cross which Silva sweeps into the net on the bounce.
