  1. Who's in charge? Part two...published at 14:38 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January 2015

With Alan Pardew seemingly on his way to take charge at Crystal Palace, coaches John Carver and Steve Stone are set to be in charge for Newcastle's next two matches, starting this afternoon at home.

Carver, 49, was assistant to Sir Bobby Robson on Tyneside between 1999 and 2004 before returning under Pardew in 2011.

His only full-time managerial position was in the MLS with Toronto but could he be a contender to take the reins at St James'?

It is Euro 96 legend Stone who is drilling the players in their pre-match warm-ups. The coach to Carver's thinker?

Crystal Palace remain officially managerless, for now at least.

After sacking Neil Warnock over Christmas they have set their sights on Newcastle boss Alan Pardew, who played for the club in the 1980s and 90s. Here he is in the 1990 FA Cup final.

Pardew has not yet officially been confirmed as new Eagles gaffer though, so caretaker Keith Millen remains in the dugout at Villa Park this afternoon.

Another draw on the road for Manchester United then - the point leaves Louis van Gaal's side in third place, six points behind Manchester City and nine short of leaders Chelsea. Stoke are rock solid in 10th place.

The corner is headed away and the referee blows for full-time. Probably a fair result, with the strong wind making it difficult for both sides.

Manchester United win a corner, surely the last action of the game. Can they make it count?

Two minutes of added time. Is it enough for one more chance on goal?

Dave W:, external As bad as Manchester United's defence is, the midfield and strikers haven't caused Begovic any trouble. No cutting edge.

Jerry Elumeze:, external Utd seriously hampered by their lack of pace. I see more pace from La Liga teams.

Connor Gallagher:, external What United need in this situation is a poacher. Someone who can create something out of nothing...

"Not long left now and it looks like United are going to try and press to get forward and score that winning goal, but they can't leave it too open. We have already seen in this game that Mame Diouf can cause problems with his pace and United have to be aware of that."

Stoke are back defending as Manchester United come forward through Adnan Januzaj. He floats a ball into the area which Wayne Rooney knocks into the path of Rafael, whose first time shot smacks Erik Pieters right in the ear. Ouch.

"Ryan Shawcross has blocked and headed everything away for Stoke today. England manager Roy Hodgson has to take a look at him as over a consistent period he has put in solid performances.

"I think he has been the victim of the style that Stoke play, that he has not been selected."

There is not much urgency from either side as we enter the final few minutes, settling for a point? It has been a tough, physical battle in testing conditions, I'd be surprised if either manager would be unhappy with a draw. Still time for a winner, though.

Ander Herrera sends the ball into the area for Juan Mata, but, not for the first time in this game by a Manchester United player, it is over hit and goes through to Asmir Begovic.

"For Stoke, they have put that much energy in to the game, United do have that quality to make it tell in the last few minutes.

"United have got to stop giving away set pieces - corners and free-kicks - in dangerous areas as I think it is Stoke's best chance to score."

John Dykes:, external Dodgy decisions? Under performing? Late ill-deserved winner? United really are back to their best.

Aidan Mifsud:, external Rafael not too bothered with the pages of notes he was being shown as he came off the bench. "Sure, yes, got it, just get me on."

Michael Devlin:, external How on earth are Manchester United in third place in the league?

On Tony Pulis at West Brom:

"He is tried and trusted. Look at the work he did at Stoke and Palace - he is organised, he will get them resilient.

"And he will do it straight away. I have spent a lot of time with Tony Pulis and he will be straight into those players right way.

"I think in terms of speed he needs to get more into that team and I think that is the first thing he will do.

"If you look at his Palace performance, they were not a long-ball team at all - they played really good football."
