  1. Manager reactionpublished at 17:21 Greenwich Mean Time 21 March 2015

    Harry Kane

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino, speaking about Harry Kane: "A striker who scores three goals is always great. I am happy for him and for the team. Now we look forward and keep going."

  2. Manager reactionpublished at 17:18 Greenwich Mean Time 21 March 2015

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger on goalscorer Olivier Giroud: "He is like every striker, he wants to score goals and the confidence comes from scoring goals, it's a vicious circle. He is a fighter and has improved technically."

  3. Manager reactionpublished at 17:16 Greenwich Mean Time 21 March 2015

More from Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger, speaking about his season's targets: "We want to finish as high as we can, we have 60 points with eight games to go. If you look at the points we have taken in the last three months, it has been outstanding. So we just want to win and win and win."

  4. Manager reactionpublished at 17:15 Greenwich Mean Time 21 March 2015

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger on whether he was concerned by difference between the first and second half displays from his side: "No, not at all. We played one game in Manchester United, one at home to West Ham, one in Monaco in Tuesday and now here so that's three away games in two weeks. I'm proud of the performance we put in today."

  5. 'Keep it simple'published at 17:14 Greenwich Mean Time 21 March 2015

    Jason Roberts
Former Blackburn striker on Football Focus

On Dick Advocaat's appointment as new Sunderland manager: "It's difficult when a new man comes in with such a short number of games to go in the season.

"Yes he has to motivate the players and keep the spirits up, but he can't go enforcing a new philosophy on the players with such a short space of time.

"I agree with Lawro that they need to start getting that service in to Jermaine Defoe. "If they simplify how they play like Tim Sherwood has done with Aston Villa, they can get results."

  6. 'Advocaat has to gamble'published at 17:13 Greenwich Mean Time 21 March 2015

"Dick Advocaat has to start to take one or two chances, pick a team that is going to win a game - maybe an extra attacking player. Tim Sherwood has done that at Aston Villa and it has worked wonders.

"Sunderland, under Gus Poyet, had been playing very negatively, in a very South American style. Get some service to Jermain Defoe, because he will score goals. I think they will stay up though. The bottom three as it is now will be the ones to go down."

  7. Player reactionpublished at 17:12 Greenwich Mean Time 21 March 2015

Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud: "We started well, on the front foot, we put the pace we wanted to into the game. The problem in the second half was we didn't play, I don't know why. We knew we needed a third goal but they put us under pressure and did well to come back.

"It was a tough game but it is a really important win. Even though we are disappointed with the Champions League exit, we want to fight on until the end of the season."

  8. Three up top for new bosspublished at 17:12 Greenwich Mean Time 21 March 2015

So what about this team selection from Dick Advocaat? Talk about an aggressive way to begin life in England.

Perhaps he senses West Ham are there to be got at with just one win in 12?

Jermain Defoe, Connor Wickham and Steven Fletcher all start. The three have a total of nine league goals in 52 outings this season.

Defo has four goals in his last five league games against West Ham, his former employers.

  9. Manager reactionpublished at 17:10 Greenwich Mean Time 21 March 2015

Crystal Palace manager Alan Pardew tells BBC Sport: "I haven't managed many teams with character as high on the agenda as this team.

"I was pleased with two of our old stalwarts - Glenn Murray and Julian Speroni.

"We're within touching distance of safety. The form we're in suggests we can do a lot better and that's what we want."

Leicester City fought hard against Tottenham but it was ultimately not enough and they remain rooted to the foot of the table. It could get worse for Nigel Pearson's side, with Sunderland, in 17th, in action at 17:30 GMT. Crystal Palace move up to 11th after an impressive win at Stoke.

    Steve Wilson
BBC Match of the Day commentator

"As Sam Allardyce sees out the last few weeks of his West Ham contract without any tangible evidence that he'll be offered another, Sunderland decided they had to act by replacing manager Gus Poyet with Dick Advocaat.

"The 67-year-old becomes the senior citizen of current Premier League bosses and has nine major club honours plus experience of leading teams at two World Cups and two European Championships.

"I remember Advocaat as a sprightly 40-something outwitting Graham Taylor's England in Rotterdam in 1993. Back then, he had the De Boer brothers, Dennis Bergkamp, Marc Overmars, Ronald Koeman, Frank Rijkaard and Aaron Winter. Any one of those would come in handy now."

Just the one change made by West Ham boss Sam Allardyce, with Carl Jenkinson returning to the side in favour of Joey O'Brien.

Sunderland manager Dick Advocaat has named an attacking XI for his first game in charge, with Jermain Defoe, Connor Wickham and Steven Fletcher all playing. Liam Bridcutt and Ricky Alvarez drop out, with Wickham and Jordi Gomez coming in.

Adam Johnson is on the bench, having returned to training after the club lifted his suspension following his arrest on suspicion of sexual activity with a 15-year-old girl.

West Ham XI: Adrian; Jenkinson, Collins, Kouyate, Cresswell; Jarvis, Song, Noble, Nolan, Downing; Sakho.

Sunderland XI: Pantilimon, Reveillere, O'Shea, Brown, Van Aanholt; Larsson, Gomez, Rodwell; Defoe, Wickham, Fletcher.

Watford have missed the chance to return to the top of the Championship after losing at home to Ipswich. Their defeat means fourth-placed Norwich have moved to within three points of leaders Bournemouth after beating Nottingham Forest 3-1, with Ipswich a further three points adrift.

At the bottom, Wigan are now eight points from safety after they drew with Bolton and Fulham won at Huddersfield, while Blackpool's fate is almost confirmed after they were pegged back by Leeds.

In League One, Preston missed the opportunity to move to within nine points of idle leaders Bristol City after they were held at Barnsley, while at the bottom Crawley and Colchester eked out potentially pivotal victories.

And in League Two, Burton maintained their five-point lead over Shrewsbury at the summit after comfortable wins for both, and bottom side Hartlepool enhanced their survival hopes with a tense victory over Mansfield.

This is how the top half of the table looks after today's results. Wins for Manchester City and Arsenal keeps up the pressure on leaders Chelsea, although they have two games in hand.

Southampton will be thrilled, they close in on fourth-placed Manchester United and Liverpool in fifth. The only sour note will be the health of goalkeeper Fraser Forster.

The England international slipped awkwardly in the first half and BBC commentator John Motson understands he is on his way to hospital with suspected knee ligament damage.
