There could be a major knock-on effect from those two early red cards as Paul Paton and Virgil van Dijk will miss next Sunday's League Cup final.

Of course, there is every chance of an appeal from both sides. And you would fancy they might have some joy given the circumstances.

United's Ryan Dow races through on goal but the Celtic defence catch up with him and his effort is easily saved by Craig Gordon.

A bizarre moment at Tannadice as both sides are reduced to 10 men. Paul Paton was certainly unlucky to see red as he had nothing to do with the incident, and Virgil van Dijk will also feel hard done by.

  4. RED CARDSpublished at 15:42 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March 2015

There's a flashpoint in midfield involving Celtic's Scott Brown, United's Calum Butcher and Virgil van Dijk. Brown had the initial challenge but there seemed to be a reaction from the United man.

Referee Craig Thomson then flashes a red card at United's Paul Paton, who was not involved in the incident, and Virgil van Dijk, who seemed to do very little.

  5. Postpublished at 15:39 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March 2015

Dundee United's Ryan McGowan takes out Anthony Stokes with a late challenge, just outside the box, but the free-kick is cleared by John Rankin.

The pitch is very poor in places and passing won't be easy today.

  7. DUNDEE UNITED V CELTICpublished at 15:33 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March 2015

Celtic look to make a fast start as Leigh Griffiths gets away down the right but his cross is easily cleared.

Celtic manager Ronny Deila has made no secret of the fact he's chasing the treble this season. Today is one of the hurdles standing in his side's way as they look to achieve that feat.

  12. GET INVOLVEDpublished at 15:21 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March 2015

Joe from Fife joins the debate on James Forrest: "As a Celtic fan I have to say that James Forrest has been a nightmare every game I've seen him in since Barcelona. He's a nice young man - but he has not beat a defender or played a good ball for very many games."

The draw for the semi-finals of the Scottish Cup follows this match at Tannadice. Falkirk and Hibernian are already in the hat, who will join them?

James Forrest is in the Celtic line-up today and his form this season is being debated by our colleagues on BBC Radio Scotland. The consensus is the winger has struggled to find his best form this season and may find it tough to oust Gary Mackay-Steven from the starting line-up, when the former Dundee United man is not cup-tied of course.

It could be big day for Forrest then...

    Celtic manager Ronny Deila

"It's going to be a tough game and a good game, hopefully we'll be the better team.

"We have to learn from everything we do and we're very hungry to bounce back today. The energy should be back again and we know how good we can be.

"The pitch is not the best so we need to be quite direct as well. We have a plan for it."

The state of the pitch at Tannadice is causing both managers concerns...

  17. Postpublished at 15:12 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March 2015

    Dundee United manager Jackie McNamara

"Going by the state of our pitch, I think there will be a lot of mistakes made. We need to be more compact, in helping each other. The last couple of games we haven't helped ourselves with doing straight passes. We need to adjust for the state of the pitch. I feel in certain areas we need to have a better shape. Aidan (Connolly) has been excellent and Dow coming off the left will cause them problems and Nadir (Ciftci) will hopefully give the same performance as he did when we beat them in December."

Berwick player-boss Colin Cameron spoke to BBC Radio Scotland after his side's 4-0 defeat at Hibernian...

"The scoreline is a wee bit harsh. We started well, created a few chances and it was pretty even I felt. The two goals in quick succession gives them confidence and the it's an uphill struggle for us.

"The third goal was always going to be the important one and when Hibs got it the game was killed off.

"We did play some good stuff at times but we never turned our better spells into goals. The mistakes we made we got punished for. We've got to take a lot of credit from getting to the quarter finals."

  20. DUNDEE UNITED V CELTICpublished at 15:00 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March 2015

Celtic go into today's game on the back of a 1-0 defeat to St Johnstone on Wednesday night.

Before that they were in excellent form and are looking to get back to winning ways at Tannadice. They do, however, know how dangerous Dundee United can be.

The Tangerines beat Celtic 2-1 at Tannadice in December, although United had Gary Mackay-Steven and Stuart Armstrong then, who have now moved to Celtic. Both are cup-ties for today's game.
