This is the first time this season that the away side have had more possession than Manchester City in the first half of a Premier League game at the Etihad.

After revelling in the glaring rick from Brad Guzan that gave away the opening goal, this has been a strangely deflating half for the home fans.

Their team has all the talent to put this Aston Villa side away by quite a margin.

Whether they have the drive and killer instinct to do so is a whole other matter.

Jack Grealish and Jores Okore are both offside as Fabian Delph's cross comes in. Fortunate that for City as both had lost their markers.

Yaya Toure tries to Lomu-away from a couple of defenders - all pumping thighs and piston hand-off - but Fabian Delph is not shaken off.

Toure looks like he strained a hamstring slightly there as well.

    City are sleepwalking through this.

They have got themselves in trouble like this before this season after going ahead.

The City fans are getting bored of this.

They urge their side to return to the tempo and pressing that shook down Villa in the first quarter of the match.

Neither Eliaquim Mangala or Martin Demichelis look like they want to spend the afternoon babysitting Villa's lone striker Christian Benteke.

The two City defenders look accusingly at each other as the Belgian wins a header that flies just over the bar.

Kieran Richardson's first-time cross comes skidding into the Manchester City box and Martin Demichelis and Eliaquim Mangala have lost Tom Cleverley.

The ball arrives at an awkward height though and the on-loan midfielder can only slash over the top from 12 yards.

    More encouragement for Villa.

Tim Sherwood spent the first 20 minutes, arms folded in the dug-out, working out who his first half-time teacup would be aimed at.

But the Aston Villa boss is up and and at 'em now, stalking the sideline. His side are starting to play.

Paul Cate: Big test for Sherwood now. The second half will be a good indicator of his managerial ability.

    What a chance!

The ball rebounds into Christian Benteke's path 10 yards out after a bit of pinball on the edge of the area. A hint of offside, but Mike Dean plays on.

Plum centre, Benteke has all the goal to aim at, but Joe Hart comes flying out, spreads like a starfish and saves well.

Aston Villa's defending has been kamikaze so far.

Leandro Bacuna almost plays a perfect throughball onto his goal for Sergio Aguero.

I think he was aiming at Jores Okore, but it was just a general punt back towards his own goal.

Tom Castle on Twitter, external: I love Guzan, and you never want to use a sub on your keeper, but it's absolutely necessary. His head is out of it.

If you look closely, you can actually see Brad Guzan's confidence crumbling to dust in this photo.

Brad Guzan is in a world of mental pain here.

The Aston Villa goalkeeper comes haring off his line to try and claim a cross and gets nowhere near it. He didn't even bother to stretch his arms up because it was so far away from him.

Fernando heads wide with the goal gaping.

Better from Villa as Kieran Richardson knocks a ball down the line for Jack Grealish, but the teenager cannot find Fabian Delph in the box.

Sergio Aguero has scored four goals in his last three Premier League games after going five without scoring.

He looks like a man who has rediscovered his mojo as well. He touches the ball round one side of Carles Sanchez, darts around the other and almost manages to collect.

A minute later he drills low, hard, but straight at Brad Guzan from the edge of the box.

The Manchester City fans are cheering Brad Guzan's every touch and singing in praise of their former goalkeeper and current Villa back-up Shay Given.

And it all started so friendly as well with the two sets of fans joining in a song about Steven Gerrard before Sergio Aguero's opener.
