Reporter Ian Brown at Old Trafford: "United are struggling to find any consistency in this game. There have been short spells where they have put West Brom under pressure, Ashley Young shot over the bar and Myhill has saved twice from van Persie.

"Van Persie had the best chance in his first start since February. West Brom had one big moment where Lescott had a free header from a corner but it went straight at De Gea."

So if it remains goalless, this is what it will do to the top of the Premier League table.

    As it stands

Certainly one to file away under 'missed opportunities' for Louis van Gaal's side. Funny how Chelsea get called 'boring' when they have scored two goals per game. If Jose Mourinho's side were in this position you still get the feeling they would get all three points.

Can United take control of this one? Will Van Gaal have given the players the hairdryer treatment?

Scott, Manchester: Watching United right now is like watching a rugby match. The back four keep carrying out from the back and then pass the ball backwards 10m behind them.

Adam, Edinburgh: Surely Michael Carrick can't be the only member of the United squad who can pass the ball forward? Seems to be the case though!

This may cheer up Manchester United fans.

A plane trailing a banner calling for Brendan Rodgers' dismissal flew over Anfield before Liverpool's game with QPR.

"Rodgers out, Rafa in", read the message in a stunt organised by a campaign group called RodgersOutClub.

Rodgers, appointed in May 2012, is the first Liverpool manager in more than half a century not to win a trophy in his first three seasons at the club.

Many fans and former players including Jamie Carragher condemned the banner. Liverpool went on to win the game 2-1 and are still in contention for a top-four finish.

    Half time stats

Some more stats for you. And the one that stands out is the top one. 78% possession. That's like in junior football. It's our ball and you're not allowed to play.

Still, it is 0-0 so possession counts for very little. But West Brom are working hard, look happy with a point and are frustrating their opponents.

Sam Hartles: WBA using the age old Tony Pulis special today.... 4-6-0 formation. Boring Boring Baggies!

Paul Collins: If titles and trophies were won by passes backwards and sideways, Man Utd would walk the title.

ruach: Does Manchester United know that possession will not actually win them the game?

Some graphics don't tell the real story of the match. This one does. Defend, defend and then defend some more. Did I mention defend?

This graphic shows the average position of the West Brom players. David De Gea in the Manchester United goal has done well to stay awake.

BBC Match of the Day commentator

"The referee brings to an end a goalless, tame and timid opening 45 minutes but that will suit Tony Pulis. So far so good for West Brom. Robin van Persie with Manchester United's best opening."

Antonio Valencia gets forward from right back and pings in a shot from the flank that is too hot for Albion goalkeeper Boaz Myhill to hold. The ball then falls to Ander Herrera, who blasts well over.

It might not be to everyone's taste, but you have to respect the defensive shift West Brom are putting in. Gareth McAuley is the next to make a crucial block, sliding in to challenge as Robin van Persie was looking to get a shot away.

It came from some bright work from Ashley Young, who has looked one of the best operators so far today. But, then again, that's not saying much.

Robin Peckitt: Can't remember hearing the crowd at Old Trafford being this quiet. Aimlessly passing won't win the game nor the crowd.

Richard: ZzZzZzZzZzZzZzZzZ. Wake me up when we start playing with any kind of tempo.

Marouane Fellaini is not a man to mess with. But it is silly from the Belgium international. He tangles with Albion's Claudio Yacob and gives his opponent a shove as the pair are on the ground.

But referee Anthony Taylor takes no action and tells the pair to get on with it. Still no bookings, no goals and few chances. This could be a very frustrating day for the Old Trafford faithful.

    Tony Pulis

Well, Frank has just called Tony Pulis 'the enemy of football'. Strong Frank, very strong. But Pulis's side are doing a job on Manchester United at the moment.

Every time the ball is played in to a red shirt, there is one in white straight away on them. Defensively West Brom have been looking solid, attacking wise they are offering little.

Frank, Cwmbran: It's Pulis that's the enemy of football not Mourinho. Four centre-backs, five in midfield and everyone stay no further than 45 yards from their goal!

Tom, North Wales: Robin van Persie looks sharp now there's a Champions League place at stake.

Pass, pass, pass, pass. Pretty, but ineffective from Manchester United so far. West Brom are defending well, defending deep and proving difficult to break down. Tony Pulis must be the happiest man in the ground.

A neat passing move down the right wing from Manchester United looks good until Joleon Lescott makes an interception to deny the hosts. A bit better, but it is a quiet Old Trafford, with the fans given little to cheer so far.

Some amazing post-match quotes coming out from Newcastle after their 3-0 loss at Leicester. Newcastle boss John Carver says defender Mike Williamson may have got himself sent off deliberately to "take an easy way out" from their relegation battle.

The centre-back was shown a second yellow for barging Jamie Vardy when the pair were off the pitch.

"I thought he'd done that on purpose - it looks like he did," Carver said. "The ball was off the pitch - he had no need to make the challenge. He will miss two games. Is it an easy way out?"
