And here comes number 9 in Gerrard's top 10 Liverpool moments. Remember photographs of fans burning his shirt outside the Shankly Gates?
Daily Telegraph football writer Henry Winter on BBC Radio 5 live: One of the great things about Gerrard is the impact he has had. It was the first Merseyside derby hat trick at Anfield since 1935, he ripped up the history books.
Former Everton midfielder Tim Cahill on Instagram:, external"Farewell to Steven Gerrard it was a privilege to have played against this guy in the derbies and more importantly to see his passion for his club. Yes he's a red and I'll always be blue but I have a lot of respect for this guy. Liverpool will not be the same without him. Wish him and his family all the best in America in the MLS. #Respect #Loyalty"
Not everyone on Merseyside is sad to see Gerrard leave. Indeed, Everton fans could be forgiven for accompanying the midfielder to the airport to ensure he boards his flight to Los Angeles after scoring nine goals in derbies.
Gerrard made 33 appearances against the Toffees, but his stand-out performance in the fixture came under the Anfield floodlights on 13 March 2012.
He netted a hat-trick, scoring in the first half and then twice more after the break - to earn Liverpool their biggest win over Everton since 1982. It was also the first hat-trick in a Merseyside derby since Ian Rush scored four in the Reds' 5-0 win at Goodison Park that same day 33 years ago, and the first at Anfield since Fred Howe achieved the feat for Liverpool in 1935.

Paul Harris: At 3-0 I was stood in the ground in total shock, whilst getting lots of texts from blue noses & Mancs. None at FT though.

It started on a cold November Sunday afternoon at Anfield in 1998. Few noticed the shy fresh-freshed 18-year-old as he made a fleeting first appearance as a substitute but it was not long before the relationship between Steven Gerrard and Liverpool fans blossomed into a full blown love affair.
Like all passionate relationships, it has been full of emotional highs. It has also been punctured by crushing lows. There have been fall-outs,euphoric highs and moments to forget.
Adored at Anfield and admired by Liverpool's fiercest rivals, Gerrard says a final farewell in a red shirt six days short of his 35th birthday against Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium on Sunday.
A good time then to look back at Gerrard's top 10 Liverpool moments as the LA Galaxy-bound midfielder prepares to pack his bags and say farewell to the Premier League.
