    When England embarked on that magical run to the semi-finals of the 1990 World Cup, it captured the imagination of a nation and remains a tournament fondly remembered by fans to this day.

    In World Cup terms, that has pretty much been as good as it has got in the last 25 years. The fact that the men's senior team has not won a tournament knockout game in nine years just highlights a depressing period of underachievement.
