    Southampton 0-1 Everton

Southampton a shadow of the team we've become accustomed to seeing at St Mary's. Slow in possession, their tempo somewhat ponderous. Everton easily dealing with whatever comes their way.

And that is why Chelsea are chasing John Stones. The centre-back expertly deals with Sadio Mane by the by-line, calmly taking the ball from the Southampton man. The home crowd call for a penalty, but it was simply an impressive bit of defending.

Referee Michael Oliver writes Graziano Pelle's name in his book. A yellow card for the Italian for a tackle on Seamus Coleman, an illustration of Southampton's frustrations.

    Southampton 0-1 Everton

John Stones falls awkwardly while defending a high ball and the young Englishman needs treatment. Thankfully for Everton fans, the Chelsea target rises to his feet and takes up his place once again in the back four.

    Southampton 0-1 Everton

Seamus Coleman brilliantly reads the play to nick the ball of Matt Targett, but although he has acres of ground to run into he somehow stumbles over the ball. It nearly got exciting. But not quite.

Seamus Coleman beats Matt Targett once again down the right. He whips a right-footed cross across goal, but there's no-one there to capitalise on his efforts.

At the other end, Gareth Barry heads away a Southampton free-kick for a corner which is headed over by Victor Wanyama.

Shane Long with a hopeful ball, which is easily headed away by John Stones. Where the Saints were penetrative in the opening stages, they're now stuttering, hoping for the best..

Daniel Woodley:  That is an outstanding goal by #EFC and @RomeluLukaku9. One of the best counter attacking goals you will see this season

Phil Bayley:  Compare Man United's attacking play with that Everton goal: pace, desire and quality is lacking for LvG.

Everton may regret that miss. They are sharper than Southampton at the moment.

With Barkley shooting and Cleverley failing on the follow up, how impressed will England boss Roy Hodgson be that they didn't convert?

Oh my word. Romelu Lukaku creates space for Ross Barkley, but the scorer of last week's stunner - unmarked 12 yards in the middle of the box - steers the ball directly at Maarten Stekelenburg. He should have done better. Either side of the Saints stopper and that would have been Everton's second.

A chance for Tom Cleverly with the follow-up... and he biffs it.

Everton galvanized by Romelu Lukaku's superb effort. Seamus Coleman weaving beyond defenders inside the box, but it all comes to nothing. The visitor's midfield now in the ascendancy.

Southampton were caught short on their left-hand side. Everton supported and overloaded in the box. It was a great ball from Kone. Lukaku rose and carefully steered the ball. It was a picture goal but one Southampton will regret.

What a surprise. Southampton looked the more likely to score, but it's Everton who go ahead. There's a graphic (below) to illustrate how that opener came about.

Clinical conter-attacking from Everton. From a Southampton corner they race upfield like greyhounds... Arouna Kone's cross finds Romelu Lukaku who firmly heads home into the top corner for his first goal of the season.

    Southampton 0-0 Everton

Southampton turning the screw. Dusan Tadic finds Graziano Pelle with a cross from the right as sweet as candyfloss and the Italian's header is just narrowly wide. The Saints currently monopolizing possession.

    Southampton 0-0 Everton

Saints fans have not stopped chanting since kick-off, creating a lively atmosphere at St Mary's.

On the pitch, Seamus Coleman fails to clear the ball... it somehow ends up with Dusan Tadic, who has an opportunity to shoot, but his effort is blocked. The best chance of the match so far.
