On that subject, Alan Shearer can tell you who will definitely not be winning the Premier League this season.

    It's not, not Newcastle.

    Quote Message

I don't think United can win the Premier League. They have made some good signings, but I look at the defence and the problems they are having with David De Gea and they just lack the solidity required. Last season was a free bite of the cherry for Louis van Gaal, but this is his team now. There are no more excuses and he cannot afford to go through the season without silverware."

  4. Lacazette extends Lyon contractpublished at 11:00

Here's a bit of transfer news (sort of). Lyon striker Alexandre Lacazette has signed a new contract at the French club - it'll run until 2019.

Unless Arsenal come in for him before the end of the window that is. Because he's French you see, in case you were wondering what the logic behind it all is.

And he scores goals - 27 of them in 33 Ligue 1 matches last year.

Still, he says he's staying put, and anyway, Karim Benzema is supposed to be the striker they need to win the league, right?

  7. De Gea to Real, then?published at 10:48

The first question should be: do Real Madrid still want him? The fans certainly seem to. An online poll by newspaper Marca saw over 80% back the potential move.

Iker Casillas has moved on to FC Porto, leaving Keylor Navas as Rafael Benitez's number one at Madrid.

Today Sergio Romero, 28, Anders Lindegaard, 31, or Sam Johnstone, 22, will be replacing the Spaniard at Old Trafford.

    For now, at least.

Former England and Spurs midfielder Jermaine Jenas has backed Van Gaal's decision though.

    Quote Message

When it’s your keeper, I think it's the right thing to leave David De Gea out if his mind isn’t right. Even if they get him to stay one more year, they have no cast iron replacement now, they can spend the next 12 months looking for someone else."

  9. De Gea situation 'a huge gamble'published at 10:42

Man United v Tottenham (12:45 BST)

    Alan Shearer
    BBC Sport

And as to whether that's a wise thing to do, well opinion seems to be divided.

First up here's what former England captain Alan Shearer makes of it:

    Quote Message

"It is a huge gamble for Manchester United to have let the David De Gea issue rumble on as long as it has. If he wants to go to Real Madrid, he will get there, whether it is this summer, in the transfer window or when his contract expires at the end of the season. Even Manchester United cannot afford to let his contract run down. The owners will not be happy to let him leave for free and miss out on £30m. It just doesn't make business sense.

When can your goalkeeper being ridiculously good become a problem? When Real Madrid want to sign him and the new season is just about to get under way.

David De Gea will not be lining up for Manchester United against Tottenham in just over two hours' time - with manager Louis van Gaal saying he didn't think the Spaniard could focus on the match...

Still pouring over the stats trying to shoehorn a striker into your Fantasy Football team?

Take a last-minute gander at Fantasy Premier League champion Simon March's guide to success:

Worth a look: Callum Wilson, Troy Deeney, Aleksandar Mitrovic, Patrick Bamford, Matt Ritchie, Memphis Depay, Dimitri Payet, Mesut Ozil, Yaya Toure, Juan Mata, Diafra Sakho

"There is plenty of potential value among the players new to the Premier League this season, especially in the forward positions.

"Bournemouth's Callum Wilson and Watford's Troy Deeney (both Championship) and Newcastle's Aleksandar Mitrovic (Belgian top flight) are arriving off the back of prolific goalscoring seasons in their respective divisions.

"Chelsea loanee and Championship Player of the Season Patrick Bamford will gain lots of attention if he can cement a spot up front in Alan Pardew's increasingly attacking Crystal Palace team."

    Ex-Scotland international

For the record, of those 30 BBC TV and radio pundits asked, four went for Arsenal as Premier League winners. No prizes if you guessed Ian Wright was one of them, but that makes them the second most-fancied (after Chelsea's total of 19).

Manchesters United and City had two apiece. Nobody said Liverpool, and they only featured once in the pundits' take on a potential top four - Dion Dublin is the man to thank for that.

Why so few for City? Pat Nevin has this:

    Quote Message

Vincent Kompany and Yaya Toure are massively important to the City team and I just don't know if they are going to be as good as they were again. If they aren't, I don't think City have a good enough squad to win the league."

    Radamel FalcaoImage source, PA

How Radamel Falcao fares at Chelsea is going to be one of the more intriguing sub-plots of the season.

You just don't forget how to be a goalscorer in one season, do you? Some of you might suggest asking Andriy Shevchenko, or Fernando Torres, but here's what Jermaine Jenas makes of his chances:

    Quote Message

In the couple of games Radamel Falcao has played, he hasn’t really looked like scoring. When you watch Falcao up close his movement is exceptional. I feel last season he was in a struggling Manchester United side. At Chelsea he has a few more South American players around him, he's in London, feeling a bit more loved, it might help him."

But surely there's a case to be made against Chelsea  having such an easy time of it?

The Blues have not done an awful lot in the transfer window in my humble opinion. Loan signing Radamel Falcao could go either way, but there are plenty of Manchester United fans who'd tell you otherwise.

Manchester City  don't look much stronger than they did last year either - Raheem Sterling and Fabian Delph to make the difference, anyone? - but United,  Liverpool and Arsenal, certainly do.
